Fellow DHs, I thought it would be good to not only have a current thread containing the most up to date info on the builds and strategies used by veteran Demon Hunters, but also one that will stay current. The goal of this thread is to be: a) an information resource containing the basic theories surrounding DH Sets, weapons, and skills so new players can have an idea of what works, and b) a reference for veteran players.

1.1.0 M6 Set Mechanics

2 Set: Companion calls all companions to your side.
4 Set: Sentries deal 400% increased damage and cast Elemental Arrow, Chakram, Impale, Multishot, and Cluster Arrow when you do.
6 Set: Your primary skills, Elemental Arrow, Chakram, Impale, Multishot, Cluster Arrow, Companions, and Vengeance deal 12,000% increased damage for every active Sentry.

The two piece bonus is pretty straight forward. The player gains the passive and active effects of all six companions: Raven, Spider, Bat, Boar, Ferrets, and Wolf.

With the four piece bonus, the DH’s sentries will cast hatred spenders synchronously with the player. In other words, if the player clicks the button once to cast a Cluster Arrow, the sentries will fire a single Cluster Arrow; if the player is not firing a spender, e.g., running around dodging stuff without firing, then the sentries will only fire normal bolts.

Regarding the 6 PC 12,000% increased damage for each active Sentry, a lot of players are curious as to how this buff is applied to their character, and whether it increases the damage of the spenders fired from sentry as well. First, the operative word in the 6 Set bonus description is Your, which means that the bonus is applied to the DH and the DH alone, not the sentries. Second, the 12,000% buff from each active sentry is multiplicative and in its own category.

For additional information on damage categories please see TastySoup's Additive/Multiplicative DMG thread in the D3 Game Mechanics and Calculation section.

1.1.1 M6 Weapon Theory

Two-Handed Crossbows

Patch 2.4 granted a boon to M6 users in the form of a redesigned Manticore https://us.diablo3.com/en/item/manticore-P61_Unique_XBow_001 which reduces the hatred cost of Cluster Arrow by 50% and increases it's damage by 250-300%! This can be paired with Bombardier's Rucksack quiver https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/bombardiers-rucksack that grants 2 additional sentries, which not only gives the player more turrets firing cluster arrows but also works with the 6 piece bonus to give the player an additional 12,000%!

Typical M6 setups use Dawn in the cube for the 100% uptime on Vengeance – Seethe, which can be achieved with a Diamond in the helm and 3 cooldown reduction rolls (CDR), e.g. Shoulders, Quiver, and Gloves. A lot of players roll with just 2 CDR rolls and deal with the 1-2 second downtime on Vengeance.
For defense, M6 users wear Zoey’s Secret https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/zoeys-secret and put the Cloak of the Garwulf https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/the-cloak-of-the-garwulf in the cube to increase the defense bonus from Zoey’s and increase the size of their pet army.

Hand Crossbows
Players can choose to equip Dawn and cube the Sword of Ill Will https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/sword-of-ill-will for a fast and fun M6 Chakram build. Some important things to note about the Sword of Ill Will is that maximum hatred can, and should, be increased with Paragon Points and the passive Blood Vengeance.

Kridershot https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/kridershot can be used with Bombardier’s Rucksack equipped and Augustine’s Pancea https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/augustines-panacea in cube to create an Elemental Arrow build. However, this would preclude the use of Dawn’s legendary power.

Yang’s Recurve can be used with Dead Man’s Legacy (DML) equipped and Bombardier’s Rucksack cubed to create an M6 Multishot build. The reason the DML is worn is because the 100% bonus to Multishot is applied to both the Sentries and the DH whereas the 100% bonus to Sentry from the Rucksack only applies to the Sentry. It should be noted that DML’s legendary power was fixed so that in now works with the Multishots cast by Sentry.

1.1.2 M6 Skill Theory

Primary (Generators)
The mechanics of M6 are such that the use of spenders, and only spenders, is incentivized. Thus DHs try to use generators as little as possible or not at all. Therefore any generator that grants 7 hatred per shot is good, though many DHs prefer Focus Fire because it hits instantly. Another notable, though less used, generator is Bola – Thunder Ball. It generates 7 hatred and can be used with the Leonine Bow of Hashir https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/leonine-bow-of-hashir to group enemies.

Cluster Arrow – The king of damage dealing abilities, CA, hits like a Mack truck but costs a lot of hatred. Therefore, builds incorporating this skill equip the Manticore crossbow for its massive buff to CA and substantial RCR.
  • Cluster Bombs – This rune is used in conjunction with the new Hellcat Waistguard belt https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/hellcat-waistguard , which grants each grenade a chance to bounce and deal increasing amounts of damage. This build is quite strong, though it takes a bit of finesse due the limited range of the cluster trajectory.
  • Maelstrom/Shooting Stars – The homing rockets give the skill greater coverage and make these runes easier to use.

  • Vengeance - Seethe – Used with Dawn in the cube, Vengeance provides more damage, immunity to crowd controlling effects, and hatred regen from Seethe. It's too good to pass up.
  • Sentry– The cornerstone of M6, Sentries are not only used to create a kill zone and cast hatred spenders but also to crowd control (CC) enemies or provide extra defense. The Polar Sentry rune provides an excellent source of CC via a slow, which procs Cull the Weak and the legendary gem Bane of the Trapped. The player should cast one or two Polar Sentries directly on top of the enemy with the remaining Sentries placed farther away from the enemy to benefit from Zei's gem (Zei's bonus is calculated separately for each Sentry and the player.

  • Vault - M6 is weak in the mobility department, so a skill like Vault is quite valuable
  • Companion- Any Companion rune will summon all companions. This skill provides a damage buff from the wolf, a defense buff from the boar, and a hatred buff from the bat.

1.2.0 N6 Mechanics

  • 2 Set: Reduce the cooldown of Rain of Vengeance by 4 seconds when you hit with a Hatred-generating attack or Hatred-spending attack.
  • 4 Set: Rain of Vengeance deals 100% increased damage.
  • 6 Set: After casting Rain of Vengeance, deal 14,000% increased damage and take 60% reduced damage for 10 seconds.

  • The two piece bonus establishes the core of N6 gameplay where the player utilizes primary skills and Hatred spenders to reduce the cooldown on RoV. An important thing to note is that the mechanic is conditional upon a hit, so if a skill like Entangling Shot misses that target, the cooldown is not reduced. Furthermore, the phrase "when you hit" should not be misread as "when you hit a target" because it is not based on the number of targets hit. It's binary, you either hit or you don't.

The four piece bonus increases the damage of RoV by 100%. This bonus is what is termed, an exclusive multiplier.

The six piece bonus adds an additional 14,000% damage buff after RoV is cast for 5 seconds. This is also an exclusive multiplier and is applied to all DH abilities including the RoV cast that initiated the buff.

The Crashing Rain legendary belt is considered to be the seventh piece of Natalya's Embrace because its legendary power, "Rain of Vengeance also summons a crashing beast that deals 3000-4000% weapon damage."

The crashing beast proc receives the same damage buffs the RoV on the player's active skill bar. It even inherits the same element type as the RoV rune being used. This belt is incredibly powerful, so powerful that it's not uncommon to see it crit for 9 billion damage.

    1.2.1 N6 Weapon Theory

    Hand Crossbows/Dual-Wielding
Natalya’s Set not only has a hand crossbow as one its pieces but also mechanics that greatly favor a hand crossbow’s high APS because the power of the set is centered around: a) getting RoV off cooldown ASAP via the 2P bonus and b) Casting RoV as frequently as possible to proc the Crashing Rain belt.

The way Natalya's set is designed favors dual-wielding, pure and simple because there no supporting quiver that can match the raw damage of an off-hand weapon like Dawn with a 130% CHD Emerald.

An important thing to note about dual-wielding with Nat's is that RoV and the Crashing Rain proc both calculate their damage from the main-hand (MH) only. What this means for the DH is that they want 10% damage on their MH and not on their off-hand (OH). Ten percent Damage on an OH weapon would be an absolute waste of an affix in a Nat's setup, especially if it were at the expense of CDR, which is the king DPS stat for Nat's.

    1.2.2 N6 Skill Theory

      Evasive Fire
    • Focus Fire - the generator of choice for many N6 users due to high amount of hatred generated per shot and the fact that it hits instantly(follow the links to the several Strafe guides to learn more).

  • All Runes - This skill has exceptional synergy with Nat's and has been used to achieve the #1 rank on both the Seasonal and non-Seasonal leaderboards in past seasons. Much could be said here, but that's best left to the guides linked in this Sticky.
  • Rain of Vengeance
    • Shade - This has a massive area of effect, and works well with Fuliminator http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/fulminator cubed
    • Stampede - an excellent GR rune, Stampede dishes out massive damage and knocks back enemies, which procs Strongarm Bracers. Also, since the rune is Fire based, the hand crossbow Balefire Caster is a great candidate to pare with the Slayer.
    • Anathema - an excellent alternative to Stampede when in a group with WDs or Saders.
    • Flying Strike - CC is very important in the higher GRs and the freeze from Flying Strike works wonderfully.

  • Focused Mind - is a an excellent choice for high GRs because it gives more Discipline over time than the other runes and allows for more frequent use of Smoke Screen, which is crucial on the higher difficulties. Also, since Nat's focuses so heavily on CDR, it's a natural fit.

  • --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1.3.0 UE Set Mechanics

  • 2 Set: Your generators generate 2 additional Hatred and 1 Discipline.
  • 4 Set: Gain 60% damage reduction and 60% increased damage for 8 seconds if no enemies are within 10 yards of you.
  • 6 Set: Your generators, Multishot, and Vengeance deal 350% increased damage for every point of Discipline you have.

  • The two piece bonus provides the DH with superb utility, allowing her to use Defensive and Hunting skills such as Vault, Shadow Power, Smoke Screen, and Caltrops all while staying at close to max discipline. The extra hatred generated per shot aids in reducing the amount of generator shots required to refill the hatred globe thereby allowing the DH to fire more multishots, which is extremely important.

The 60% damage reduction bonus from the 4PC is good and quite easy to maintain. I have tested this out quite extensively on the PTR and, essentially, the bonus continually refreshes when no enemies are within 10 yards. If mobs come within 10 yards, then it starts counting down and will refresh again as soon as the player breaks contact. The latest PTR patch added a buff icon to notify the player if the 4PC bonus is active. When a monster gets within 10 yards, a timer will starting counting off 8 seconds thereby letting the player know exactly when the buff will drop off. Again, the four piece bonus is very reliable. The only situation that may prove challenging for players is if they are being chased by Fast, naturally fast elites, and have little to no crowd control abilities.

Like Marauders, the 350% increased damage for every point of Discipline is an exclusive multiplier. With this in mind, players need to maximize the amount of Discipline on their gear. The primary items that can roll Discipline are: Hand Crossbows, Bows, Crossbows, Quivers, and Cloaks. Also, while the Manald Heal Ring and Stone of Jordan can roll Discipline, the additional damage increase from the extra discipline is less than the increase from the Focus and Restraint multipliers.

Please note that each point of discipline is additive with all other points of discipline. Therefore the damage percent increase from 85 to 86 discipline is only 1.17%, not 350%. Here's what the numbers look like.

    85 disc × 100% UE6 buff = (1 + 29,750%)

If adding 1 more disc was a 350% increase in damage, then that would be x2 damage.

    29,750 x 4.5 = (1 + 133,875%)

However, 1 disc does not add 104,125% damage, rather it adds about 1.16% damage.

    29,750 x 1.01176 = (1 + 30,099.86)

    86 x 350% = (1 + 30,100%)

The main takeaway for the player is that an item with 11 Max Discipline is very close in power to an item with 12 Max Discipline. The difference is only about 1.17% Therefore, it's almost always better to roll one the other primary affixes, such as the damage range on a Yang's, as they will usually yield a much larger damage percent increase than 1.17%

    1.3.1 UE Weapon Theory

    Two-Handed Bows
Yang’s Recurve http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/yangs-recurve is the weapon of choice for most UE DHs due to its incredible boost to Multishot’s attack speed and massive amount of RCR. It is usually paired with either a Witching Hour (WH) or Hunter’s Wrath (HW) belt http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/hunters-wrath and a Dead Man’s Legacy quiver http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/dead-mans-legacy for its power and the incredible damage buff.

The Witching Hour is usually used in conjunction with the Cindercoat or Hexing Pants in Kanai's Cube. This allows Multishot to be cast more freely and at a higher APS (note: the 50% Attack Speed from Yang's is multiplicative, thus amplifying the AS from WH). Hunter's Wrath increases the speed and damage of generators, which reduces the lag time of the generator animation thereby allowing multishots to be cast sooner. Essentially, HW shorten's the generating window thus allowing more Multishots to be fired over a given period of time.

For high GRs, Yang builds use the convention of elements ring http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/convention-of-elements in the cube. The DH progresses through the GR using the time between COE cycles to group/channelize the enemy. When the Fire cycle activates, he unleashes a torrent of multishots. Remember, cold comes before fire, this is when the DH should start getting ready to burst down the group.

In 2.4, Yang builds will be cubing the redesigned Dawn http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/dawn for permanent uptime on Vengeance. The amount of sheet CDR required for 100% uptime on Vengeance is 36.6%.

For TX speed runs, Yang builds forgo COE and Hunters Wrath in favor of Avarice Band http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/avarice-band and Goldwrap http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/goldwrap they also slot Blood Vengeance for resource sustain. Philosophios has an excellent guide for a 2.4 TX speed build (linked to in this Sticky).

    Hand Crossbows (Dual-Wield)
The new Hellcat Waistguard power https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/hellcat-waistguard made dual-wield with UE quite powerful. The belt gives grenades a chance to bounce 3-5 times dealing and additional 50% damage on each bounce with the final bounce increasing it to 800%. Since the UE set buffs all generators, players have been able to clear GR 90+ with Grenades (Grenade Cache and Cluster Grenades are the most common runes used). The hand crossbows used are Dawn https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/dawn and Fortress Ballista https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/fortress-ballista . The Buriza can be cubed thereby effectively multiplying the number grenades because each pierce spawns another grenade.

1.4.0 The Shadow's Mantle Set Mechanics

  • 2 Set: While equipped with a melee weapon, your damage is increased by 6000%.
  • 4 Set: Shadow Power gains the effect of every run and lasts forever.
  • 6 Set: Impale deals an additional 75,000% weapon damage to the first enemy hit.

  • The two piece bonus sets the theme for Shadow’s Mantle by making the massive 6000% multiplier conditional upon the use of a melee weapon, which is usually a dagger, sword, or mace. The 6000% bonus applies to ALL Demon Hunter skills and legendary gems (e.g. Pain Enhancer) rather than a select few like other sets; however, there are several skills that require a range weapon in order to function, which necessarily excludes them from use in an S6 build. The below skills cannot be used with a melee weapon equipped.
    • Hungering Arrow
    • Entangling Shot
    • Evasive Fire
    • Rapid Fire
    • Elemental Arrow
    • Strafe
    • Multishot
    • Cluster Arrow
    • Rain of Vengeance

The four piece bonus gives Shadow Power all the runes and makes them last forever, with Night Bane being the one exception. Night Bane can be considered as the one active component of Shadow Power in that the player has to activate the skill to slow all enemies within 30 yards and that slow will wear off after 5 seconds like normal.

There are a couple things S6 players should know about Shadow Power: 1) Life per Kill secondary affixes increase the amount of Life on Hit granted by Shadow Power by 25%, 2) The Life on Kill https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/bottomless-potion-of-mutilation and Life on Hit https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/bottomless-potion-of-the-leechpotions can be snapshotted and maintained indefinitely thereby greatly increasing one’s recovery by first activating the potion and then reactivating Shadow Power, which then take a snapshot of the players inflated LoK or LoH.

S6 bonus grants Impale an additional 75,000% damage to the first enemy hit on each and every attack made by the DH. Neither the piercing daggers from Overpenetration (cold rune) nor the ricochet daggers from the lightning rune benefit from the S6 bonus (those two runes do have good synergy with Karlei's legendary power). Also, the Grievous Wounds rune for Impale has actually been disabled for S6 so use any rune but that one.

It should also be noted that the 75,000% damage to the first enemy hit does apply to the additional daggers granted by the quiver Holy Point Shot, which makes said quiver BiS for S6. In other words, all three daggers are dealing 75,000% damage each to the first target they hit. Furthermore, if one is standing close enough, all three daggers can hit the same monster for insane damage!

    1.4.1 Shadow's Mantle Weapon Theory

The most popular dagger for S6 is Karlei’s Point https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/karleis-point because its legendary power returns 15 hatred if it hits an enemy already Impaled thereby allowing the player to chain Impales nonstop. It’s important to note that this power is not capped but rather scales with the number of enemies hit, thus the Impale runes Overpenetration and Ricochet have the best synergy with Karlei’s because they can easily keep the DH above 90% Hatred, which is import when pushing the highest GRs with Aquila Cuirass https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/aquila-cuirass in the cube (Physical and Fire runes can still perform very well and a lot has to do with what items drop for the player).

Note: Since Hatred isn’t in issue, use the Dark Heart rune for Vengeance (Dawn should be in cube) and place Aquila Cuirass in cube.

The quiver that is paired with Karlei’s Point is the redesigned Holy Point Shot https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/holy-point-shot . The Holy Point Shot quiver grants two additional impales. All three impales receive the 75,000% additional damage to the first enemy hit from the S6 bonus, and all three impales can hit the same enemy! This is why S6 DHs get up close and personal with elites. Furthermore, the extra Impales synergize with Karlei’s power to return even more hatred.

Karlei’s Point w/HPS gameplay favors the Endless Walk set https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/the-compass-rose , which frees up a ring slot for Elusive Ring https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/elusive-ring , Stone of Jordan, or Convention of Elements (wear the best ring and put the other in the cube). For high end group play, wear SOJ. For solo play, DHs tend to favor Elusive Ring.

Lastly, the Chain of Shadows belt https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/chain-of-shadows has excellent synergy with a Karlei build and is used extensively due the excellent mobility it provides. Players can cast Impale and get three to four vaults in at no cost.

While not as popular, the Sword of Ill Will https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/sword-of-ill-will , coupled with the Spines of Seething Hatred https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/spines-of-seething-hatred , can be used to make a Chakram based S6 build with Impale used to snipe hard single targets. Some important things to note about the Sword of Ill Will is that maximum hatred can, and should, be increased with Paragon Points and the passive Blood Vengeance

Some other swords that players can experiment around with are Rimeheart https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/rimeheart and Fulminator https://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/fulminator .

    5.1 Active/Passive Skill FAQs

Q: How is the 100% increase to rockets from the Ballistics passive calculated?

A: The rocket buff from Ballistics is what is called an exclusive multiplier. What this means is that the 100% is multiplied against the rocket’s after all other bonuses have factored in (e.g. Steady Aim, MfD, skill bonus etc). In other words, this skill makes rockets do 2x damage. Yes, it’s extremely powerful.

Q: How does the buff from Steady Aim work with Sentries?

A: The buff is applied universally to the DH and all Sentries as long as there are no enemies within 10 yards of the DH. The distance from enemies to the Sentry is not a factor, just the distance from enemies to the DH.

    5.2 Legendary Item FAQs

Q: What are the drop rates for items?

    A: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cM-s4e66ql2zsrkfkfKXmvVJ4zmngzxdzVLk9gvLvT8/htmlview?usp=sharing&sle=true

Q: Are two Discipline rings better than Focus and Restraint?

    A: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/17084689010;

Q: Do Depth Diggers increase the damage of Elemental Arrow when used with Kridershot?

A: No, the wording on DDs specifically states “Primary skills that generate resource deal 80-100% additional damage.” Elemental Arrow, even though it generates hatred with Krider, is still classified as a Secondary skill. In a similar fashion, Primary skills that don’t generate resource, e.g. Wizard, do not work with DDs either ( http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/depth-diggers ).

Q: Why do players use Hexing Pants of Mr. Yan? You have to stop and shoot, right?

A: The buff from Hexing Pants (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/hexing-pants-of-mr-yan ) lasts for a split second after the player stops, thus it possible for players to fire generators and spenders while stutter-stepping and maintain the buff 100% of the time. Incidentally, this item is very beneficial to hand crossbow builds.

Q: I’ve equipped the Bombarier’s Rucksack, but my Sentries are still capped at 3, not 5, what gives?

A: The Rucksack’s legendary power increases the maximum number of active Sentries a DH can have on the field by 2. It does not, however, increase the maximum number charges, which is 3 with Custom Engineering. Therefore, players with a Rucksack can plant 3 sentries, wait to get more charges, and then plant 2 more Sentries for a grand total of 5 active Sentries.

Q: What are the best legendary gems and/or what’s the best third gem option?

A: Currently (3/6/205, the best gems are Zei’s and Bane of the Trapped, the reason being: both gems are exclusive multipliers easy used by DHs. The best third gem to use is either Bane of the Powerful or Taeguk (high GR players usually opt for Taeguk over BotP). That said, this question leads to the next question…

Q: Is it the extra passive worth it to use a Hellfire amulet without a socket?

A: Yes, it entirely worth it to use a good Hellfire even if it doesn’t have a socket (some actually prefer an un-socketed Hellfire).

    5.4 Kanai's Cube List

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/18300730068 esd's Comprehensive Listing: Items for Kanai's Cube (added 7/15/2015)
Some monster progression has changed in 2.1.1 patch. Here is my (getting) updated thread:
ESD is working on his physical strafer guide, just a heads up. The first 4 pages of the thread is a mess of me whining until ESD got that sparkle into our eyes anyway. I'm heading in a different direction altogether with Icy Trails, though I have no intention to do any guide. But vets should re-check out the mechanics for Icy Trails (at least in a non-M6 environment).

Not certain if the physical strafer should be called a strafer or best use case for Natalya/RoV honestly. We need them DPS meters.
I already got my happy perma SS strafe back too recently:

Can make some adjustments later on, but it works and clears fine.
You're probably the only non-set character on the fastest 10 T6 rifts clear leaderboards. Well, non-6 piece at least.

It's funny how good and bad strafe is at the same time.

FoK (GR 34 - 1 key item still missing to push further):
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/15700025866#1 (a bit messy atm, going to clean it)

still working on optimizing the build - cap for the build may be ~GR38
    Very nicely presented.

    Should be a sticky

    Glad to see this posted.

    Knowledge is power!

(At least it used to be...)
Pretty decent compilation of the differences for people to learn from. Most important theme of all of this is that not one build is really mandatory...

Other class forums also have posts like theses, i don't see why we shouldn't have ours :D
Just want to mention that "Strongarm" bracer works really well with Windforce.

It would be nice if you also had links to builds, not just posts talking about them. Would be easier to compare. :)

Right, I'll work on adding links to the actual skill load-out. Regarding Strongarm Bracers and WF, I plan on adding an Item theory section that would cover this and other item synergies.

Also, there are plenty of builds out there that need a guide to go with them, for example, the popular LfB build for co-op. If anyone can point me to a thread or wants to write it up from scratch, by all means, let me know.

    Thanks :)
    Added esd's excellent Strafe guide.

If you haven't done so, request sticky. This forum really needs a thread like this, as new players currently have no other means by which to get their questions answered than to ask and hope they don't get fed misinformation. Furthermore, even if they are given good info, it's usually very concise, if not a one word response, which leaves the player wondering as to the veracity of the answer, and are never give the logic or sufficient evidence to prove the conclusion.
