Why's the server so laggy?

General Discussion
Seriously, did Blizzard shut down half of their diablo 3 server or something?
This lag is ridiculous.
That moment when you realize, its only on your end.
If it was actually at Blizzards end, there'd be twenty five threads started already.

But since there's only one...
They are going to be doing login/authentication server maintenance again this Tuesday (6/11) from 5-10 am PDT. Unless you are in game, I wouldn't advise logging in. If you are in game, DO NOT LOG OUT. You won't be able to log back in until maintenance is complete. I'm not sure about game creation, however. MissCheetah might know, though.

They should have a new server/upgraded server in place when maintenance is complete. They had a malfunction on Friday that caused the server to be down for ~3 hours. This is a reasonable hypothesis that should be easily fixed. These do take time to install, transfer, load test and all the other internal things that are required to be done.

If you must play during maintenance, though, if you have characters on the other servers (most serious players do), you can log in to EU or Asia before NA maintenance begins. The authentication server(s) affect all games, as well as the BNet launcher, so be aware of that.

You are not alone and its not necessarily on your end. I got double the download speed back in Feb. 2019 (a promotional deal). Since then the latency meter went from the 90's down to the 40's to 60's range. Recently, the latency has jumped and hovers between 120 - 285ms, with frequent lag spikes. The latency range is what I would get playing on EU with my old internet speed. I ran a speed test @ speedtest.net and the results were:
- 7ms Ping
- 214.08 Mbps Down
- 36.09 Mbps Up

I'm in NYC on Optimum.
I started a thread in the tech support forum in regard to frequent lag spikes and high latency since the 6/4 maintenance, which can be found here:

Read through the forums. There are HUNDREDS of threads about this already. Have been for a very long time. It's common fact that this games servers are and have been garbage for years now.
Yet I have no lag.

Could it possibly be that if you performed a trace route, you would find a problem with how your IP is routing you?
All good here, and I'm playing US server from NZ

my internet sucks. my normal ping is 200 and higher
usually yelow bar
i have plenty disconects and what not
dont care if blizzard end or my end
never crosed my mind came to the forums and complain about it
been playing like this since release
deal whit it and stop Q_Q
Sorry guys not sure what happened to my earlier thread in the tech support forum but I created a new thread and it has my WinMTR and tracert data. You can find it here:

@Jeetkundo:
Some of us are paying for high internet bandwidth so we should have far fewer disconnects, lag spikes, and high latency. There is no Q_Q. However, there are network traffic issues. With my experience specifically, my traffic is going from NYC, to Denver, to the Netherlands, and back to the US and then to Blizzard's servers. This long trip is bringing lots of latency. I'm not sure if Blizzard is a customer of the ISP's in Denver. If they are not then it might mean neither Blizzard or I, or my ISP have the ability to influence outcomes.
Update:
It seems the Netherland IP's are Blizzard EU IP's that they repurposed here in the US.

Below is the information gathered from a support tech at Cogent (ISP):

@Maskraider:
Some additional info:
Hops 7-11 are bundled ethernet (notice the BE at the beginning of the host name). Hop 7 is in New Jersey (most likely Edgewater). The tech. said that the hop 7 router is connected to Cablevision/Altice. Its a 100 gigabit connection and there was only 30 gigabits worth of traffic (yesterday afternoon/evening) so its definitely not flooded/congested. The 33ms ping is because their system places ICMP traffic at a lower transmission priority. The true ping if the priority was removed would be much lower. The tech looked at the other routers in the trace route path and said none of them were congested and none were near their capacity. The almost uniform ping values reflects de-prioritization.

He also stated that Cogent had an issue with one of their routers in Dallas Fort Worth, Texas (DFW) a few days ago but the issue was quickly resolved (a minutes to a few hours time frame). However, the DFW router that was fixed is not in the trace route list. Any spill-over traffic would have had a barely noticeable impact on other routers given their high transmission capacity. None of the Cogent routers in the list had issues.

Hops 13-19 are Blizzard network devices/servers with the recycled Netherland IP's.
Blizzard moved some of the Diablo 3 Servers to other, more $$$ earning games.

If you expect good servers on an old game...well, you are pretty naive.

I would have done the same since this game is already messed up anyway.

It feels like the dude they won´t let die in peace and instead keep him connected to machines to prevent his death. Diablo 3 is on life support with seasons which barely do anything, except to motivate you and Botting scum to get some extra Pixels like the ugly season wings.
