[Mac] Low Performance Data Collection

Mac Technical Support
Hey Mac Community!

To help our team research even more about the on-going low performance reports, we'd like to get more information about your system, what kind of issues you're seeing and other misc information. Please read all the information below, so that the team can work to alleviate performance concerns.

Note: If you're experiencing stuttering issues, this is something that is a known issue for both PC and Mac. This thread is for exclusively low performance issues, like low FPS, overheating and other various performance issues.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6369438018
It is possible for certain machines to experience "stuttering" when all of the game's assets are fully loaded. Our testing has concluded on this issue and Blizzard hopes to have this resolved in a future patch.

After you've done that, please provide the following information.

  • Your full system specs
      1. Launch Diablo III and login into the game.
      2. Put Diablo III into Windowed mode.
      3. With Diablo III the active window, go to the system menu bar and select Help>Copy Support Information: http://i49.tinypic.com/332qpv9.png
      4. This will copy your system specs, minus any personal identifiable information (PII), to your clipboard.
      5. Post the contents to this thread with other information requested. (Command-V)

  • How long after gameplay does the performance issues start? (immediately, 5 min after starting, 10 min, etc)
  • What are your exact symptoms when the performance issues start? (does the game stutter, is it overall low performance, does the game completely stop rendering for a few seconds and then start again, etc)
  • What FPS in-game do you see when these performance issues happen? (Press Control or Command-R to see in-game FPS)
  • What display mode are you playing in? (Windowed, Windowed-Fullscreen, Fullscreen)
  • What resolution(s) does this happen in? (1920x1080, 800x600 etc)
  • If you have an app that measures the Mac's temperature, like iStat Pro or SMC FanControl, what temps are you seeing?
  • Finally, please post your D3Prefs.txt file contents to http://pastebin.com/ and link the URL here. Make sure to remove your account email address from the files prior to posting. This will help us see what settings you have enabled. Easiest way to get to your D3Prefs.txt file:
      1. Launch Diablo III and login into the game.
      2. Put Diablo III into Windowed mode.
      3. With Diablo III the active window, go to the system menu bar and select Diablo III>Show in Finder>Game Preferences: http://i47.tinypic.com/21310z5.png
      4. This will take you directly to the D3Prefs.txt file. Open up the file and copy it's contents to paste on http://pastebin.com/ and link here.

Issues immediately start.

Walking: FPS over 60, often choppy.

Encountering many mobs: FPS around 15, severely choppy like FPS below 1.

(I doubt if this is accurate as the FPS counter flashes too quickly.)

Windowed, Windowed-Fullscreen and Fullscreen modes can all happen the issues.

  • Immediately
  • Game stutters, low performance, steadily slow
  • 10-15 FPS, completely unplayable
  • Windowed-Fullscreen (Same problem in all options)
  • All resolutions, I used to default to 1920x1080, but I can't select that resolution unless I select "Best for Retina". I prefer desktop res of 1920.

Game is unplayable as the screen freezes every third step, and is happening much more frequently. I do not recall it being this bad when the game first came out
Keep the reports coming in!

@Labathor- This is something that the Mac team is researching for the client. Any changes they do are only for the Mac version of Diablo III, as this is the specific client they work on.

There is a known issue for both platforms that might be related to what you've been seeing. This is separate from the low performance reports we've been investigating:

How long after gameplay does the performance issues start?
Varies in intensity. Minor performance issue from the start. Usually when new monsters come on screen. After a period of play Major issues start to make the game unplayable. The timing for the Major issues varies. Sometimes it's early when the game starts, and other times it's much laster after about a half hour.

What are your exact symptoms when the performance issues start?
Minor issues I would describe as rapid frame skipping. A monster will appear and make a sudden jump in position.
Major issues are more like a rapid throttling of frame rate that returns to normal for a few seconds then back down. Feels like the character is running though mud while it happens.

What FPS in-game do you see when these performance issues happen?
I can get upto 20 but have it set at 15 to reduce the minor glitches during pla.
Major issue the fps drops down to around 5fps

What display mode are you playing in?
I've tried both but the issue seems independent of full screen vs windowed mode

What resolution(s) does this happen in?
All of them. Currently running at 960x600 but 1280x800 I believe is native for the monitor and both resolutions have the issues.

    D3Prefs.txt
    http://pastebin.com/LWttA5gJ

    [edit]
forgot to mention that after about a half hour sometimes more sometimes less the issue goes away for a few min. eventually it comes back and the length of time for it to come back always varies but it seems to be about 5 min to 30 min.
    Hey all,

Let's remember to keep this related to data collection exclusively. I've cleaned this thread up to remain so, but I'll try to address some concerns.

I understand your concerns about this, I truly do, but this forum is primarily staffed by technical support. This means we attempt to resolve issues first with support steps. If those fail, it might be an issue or bug that we are unable to address, and we can only rely that information up to appropriate teams.

Technical Support are not programmers and cannot change coding stuff. We relay information that is giving to us, and that information has to be rock solid. We don't want to guess or speculate, as we aren't privy to a lot of stuff that developers are.

We did update some threads, specially with the fact that most issues previously researched are related to a cross platform issue which is mentioned here: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6369438018

    Compatibility
  • It is possible for certain machines to experience "stuttering" when all of the game's assets are fully loaded. Our testing has concluded on this issue and Blizzard hopes to have this resolved in a future patch.

  • Your previous data helped come to this conclusion. Now we have to filter further and see if there is any actual issues outside of this that are Mac specific. This is why we opened a new thread.

So again, please keep this thread related to data collection. Other than that, we'll update stickies accordingly to help communicate information if there are updates or if something is still being investigated so that in the future, others can see status and what not.

How long after gameplay does the performance issues start?
Immediately. More when in a big fight with lots of effects. Its even worse when playing in co-op.

What are your exact symptoms when the performance issues start?
    Extremely low FPS.

What FPS in-game do you see when these performance issues happen?
    ~25-30fps no action & <10-15fps in combat.

What display mode are you playing in?
I usually played in Windowed Full Screen mode. Now I'm playing in Fullscreen to see if its any less worse. It is, but only by a few fps values, not a lot.

What resolution(s) does this happen in?
    1440*900

If you have an app that measures the Mac's temperature, like iStat Pro or SMC FanControl, what temps are you seeing?
    While in game, around 85-95°C.

Finally, please post your D3Prefs.txt file contents to http://pastebin.com/ and link the URL here.

I get 30 FPS with consistent stuttering and FPS drops regardless of my graphical settings, low or high. It can be game ruining, but sometimes I can manage to play. In these cases, it's still unacceptable quality. This starts immediately when I boot up the game.

The resolution I'm running is the native resolution to my Macbook - 1440x900. As with the graphical settings, my performance does not improve if I lower the resolution.

Temperatures: I have seen my CPU getting up 80 degrees from playing this game, but lately it has been seeing around 70 degrees. The GPU rarely exceeds 70 degrees, and if it does, it's only by one or two degrees.

How long after gameplay does the performance issues start : immediately
What are your exact symptoms when the performance issues start : the game stops rendering for a few seconds then starts again
What FPS in-game do you see when these performance issues happen : 60 fps
What display mode are you playing in : try'ed all still lags
What resolution(s) does this happen in : 1440x900
Thanks for the continued reports. These shall be sent to our team today for review.
Ok so guys I’ve found something for the rMBP.
First sorry for my english, I’m from france and I post here because there is no mac forums in the EU bnet.

So before 1.0.4 I was running fine @ 40fps. after the patch everything was OK until I ran Onyx to cleanup my mac. After that the game was running @10-15 fps. I could feel lags as soon as I start the game.
    I tried everything even patch to 1.8.2 beta (10.8.2 (12C53) Kernel Version: Darwin 12.2.0) + reset NVRAM + SMC…

    Nothing worked.

Then I plugged my rMBP to an external display to check the framerate and I noticed that the game was running @ 80+ fps all settings high @ 1280!

I unplugged the display and started the game, had to change the settings to get 1920 back and then: 40 FPS !!!!

    Here are some screenshots:

When I run Onyx I check everything in the Automation panel, I think some MacOS caches are involved here because everytime I run Onyx the problem appears.
I have to plug the external display, change some settings, quit, unplug it, relaunch the game, and do everything again if the problem persist. Ultimatly, it will resolve the issue.

    I hope it helps.

Cheers from south of France ;)
