Hearthstone on Chromebook (How to)

Community Discussion
Yoyoyo guys,

I've seen a lot of people asking around and stuck in binds ghetto rigging with their chromebook wondering how to install hearthstone onto it. For those linux enthusiasts or those wanting to learn or just that desire to play hearthstone here ya go. Possibility for sticky would be cool as I know a lot of people have been wondering this. However my English in here is that equal to a sixth grader, but none the concern I'm sure you can follow. I will revise if asked for.

Anywhom, with a few quick modifications to your chromebook it can easily and smoothly play hearthstone on low with highest chromebook resolution so it does not compromise the graphics in any notable fashion. Chromebook runs in a linux environment which means with you can quickly and easily install any linux desktop onto it as well. Here is a guide on how to do this if youre willing to do so.

Afterwards, you can just install a simple program "Wine" a windows emulator that takes up little to no file space on your chromebook and you can directly install hearthstone and other windows applications and such onto it. If you want to get fancy you can even use thumbdrives and portable harddrives and load games onto those ;)

Before installing hearthstone onto your computer, you must go into the wine configuration, this can be done by searching "Wine" on the ubuntu which in the instructions on lifehacker above would be the "Unity" part of the instructions opposed from "xfce" I would recommend ubuntu as it's simpler more aesthetically pleasing and more user friendly without compromising any performance on your system (This run on sentence though...) anyway, you can do this after searching wine by clicking "Configure Wine" or something of the sorts it's fairly self explanatory there. Once there click on the library tabs and we are going to add two new overrides in an effort to fix two different errors with the running of it in wine.

The first error you might face would be the battle.net launcher patching files then crashing, to fix this type in "dbghelp" without quotes in the new overrides box and click add. Now highlight it click edit and set it to disabled. Finally click okay. This will allow the battle.net launcher to download and patch the files properly with no crashes.

The second error you can face would be hearthstone crashing upon launch, I forget the exact error message, but the fix is almost identical to the one above. Firstly in the box type in "msvcp100" again without quotes and click add. Now drop down again to the existing overrides box select this and click edit. Set it to "Native then builtin"

Click apply and then okay.

Run hearthstone and go to town :)

~Regards, Matt
Okay, I have done everything, but after your parapgraph which starts with "afterwards" I am completely lost. Everything you say after that seems like rambling and I don't understand anything. Sorry!

I think I got wine, but it never installed. it's just sitting in my downloads folder. I dl'd hearthstone, but it still won't install on either the chrome nor the linux programs. I switch between the two but nothing.

How do I install Wine? What do I do next? Help me! :P
Haha yeah, I wrote this at like one or two in the morning as I am doing with this message as well. To install wine on ubuntu you can follow this guide here. http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu

It should get you to where you need to be.

If you're confused after that feel free to leave another reply I'll get back to it ASAP :)
So I can't even get Wine on the software center, winehq, or synaptic. They all say the files can't be found. Tried adding the ppa to other software in swc, nothing. Also if you know anything about running gnome from a samsung chrombook that would be awesome =D.
Wine will only work on chromebooks with x86 processors (like intel or AMD) any ARM processors won't have a chance at emulation. If you work out how to do it with an ARM processor chromebook (like samsung series 3 [303c], I'll give you an internet!
Thanks for posting this fix! However, when I try to start up hearthstone it crashes even after I added the overrides.
I'm following the directions and am trying to install wine. I used the link that you provided, but I can't find the Ubuntu Software Center?
Yikes. Rigging Linux, then Wine, just to launch Hearthstone doesn't sound pleasant. How does it run? I can't imagine too well.
There's actually a good chance this will get easier. Google is offering an android runtime for chromeOS now, and Blizzard will bring Hearthstone to Android.

So it's liekly that in 2015 Hearhtstone will run on chromebooks without any major hacking even on ARM platforms.

Any development on this? I have just got a chromebook and keen to play hearthstone but have no idea where to even start with what's been mentioned above as my knowledge with computers is poor. This is also the only information I've found on this.
Appreciate any help you can give.
This has several steps and will take you 15 minutes but just follow it step-by-step and it works.

I'm in no way an expert, but according to other threads I've read they say that this won't actually work due to a web-GL problem. Did you find a way to overcome this?

Tried this 2/16/15 on Samsung Chromebook 2 w/ Intel processor

After numerous attempts, the furthest I got was a messed up battle.net page. The work around for this was posted here

http://www.webupd8.org/2014/10/partial-workaround-for-black-distorted.html

It didn't work and I gave up there. If you must try, I suggest using PlayOnLinux as just Wine did not work. Using PlayOnLinux, you would use an older version of Wine (Something.15) . In my experience, I was able to log on and start the download but the graphics were all messed up like in the image in the link above.

Later, I tried to install the android Hearthstone apk onto ChromeOS but later found out that Hearthstone is incompatible on this spreadsheet.

We're probably gonna wait to wait for official release of Android apps on ChromeOS, but if you do manage to get it to work, please post here!
No luck on Toshiba Chromebook 2 either. Stuck with Remote Desktop play, not the most efficient way of playing :p

But if theire's gonna be releases of Android apps on ChromeOS I doubt Hearthstone will be with the first. Is Hearthstone going to be released on ChromeOS at all?

Waiting for solutions if someone comes up with one.
Unfortunatly I cant seem to get to far. I installed wine 1.7 got everything i needed and got battle.net to install but every time it launches its just a Black screen on my desktop. :'(
A much easier way is to use the new chrome remote desktop. If you are like me then you have a chromebook and a desktop but want to play hearthstone on the go and maybe your phone screen is too small or too laggy. Leave your desktop on with chrome remote desktop on (there are guides on how to connect your pc and chromebook elsewhere) and then control your pc via your chromebook and play hearthstone on your PC from a far!
The launcher isn't updating it's files even when I put "dbghelp" in the libraries tab in "Wine". How do I fix this?
