Hearthstone Masters

Play Mode Discussion

Hearthstone esports is going to change not sure if it's for the better.
It's an interesting approach to side-boarding and I'll reserve judgement on that until we see it in play. I do hope that we see some success with the format and ultimately seeing it available in-game for us non-"masters."
Well. It seems safe to say, for a brand new competitive game mode in Hearthstone, this is a big disappointment for a large majority of players.
Next up we have OTK Priest versus, OTK priest versus wall priest vs another version of OTK priest.

Lets also rejoice at the 5 hour best of 3 odd warrior mirrors.
I wouldn't go as far as to call this in out of season april fools joke... but I am not impressed.
Still baffled as to why they didn’t implement an in-game tournament

Official statement was that they simply couldn't live up to the hype.

While many players would like to see a tournament system, they actually do not undertand consequences of taking part in one. First you need to have a good chunk of time (2-3hours) for a single tournament. Second, you have to be prepared to wait between matches, sometimes substantial amount of time where you can't do anything else related to HS. Third, for a stable and meaningful tournament players have to play until the end, more or less.

In real life people would drop off from tournaments left and right. Because they lost 1st match, because they couldn't play until the end, because they couldn't stand waiting.... Overall experience would be very degraded and compromised, unless a very sophisticated system was implemented to handle such issues. It looks like Blizz couldn't overcome those obstacles. In the end there would be more people whining about Tournament mode than those happy with it. So they scrapped the idea.

That's way it is sensible to create completly separated system for people who actually "know what they are getting into". Realying on 3r party solution is a questionable choice though.

Specialist format, sounds much better than Conquest. It probably isn't perfect but it is good compromise between full sideboarding and having none at all. You get benefits of sideboarding with minimum downtime between games.

No biggy though. Poker tournaments both live and online have the same things happen but those still go on everyday. We desperately need a different format to play in that what we have now which is super stale and lame. It’s the worst it’s ever been. Time to shake it up.

Same with chess.com. The waiting thing is solved by only joining a tournament that features the time limits you want. And people still drop out all the time, it's just no big deal.

I do feel like this format lends itself to promoting control decks over aggro ones for sure.

There isn't much value to side boarding in an aggro deck. Sure, you could squeeze in some silences if the opponent was taunt heavy, but a control deck gets more out of being able to shift more AoE in vs. The aggro decks, and leaving it out entirely against control/otk matchups.

Fatigue decks are not likely to fare too well in the format for the same reason, as they are also easier to combat when your deck doesn't need to include cards that would be used to combat minion pressure out of more aggressive lineups.

If they do put more dirty rat type options, pure otk decks will likely also struggle to take hold for similar reasons (opponents gain more from the side boarding against them than they gain against that opponent).

I'm interested in how it all works out, but I do expect control decks to have the advantage here.
Doesn't sound very interesting to watch to me. 3 similar decks being played over and over again. I mean how exciting could that be? However, they still need to make Hearthstone exciting to watch again. I used to watch it daily on twitch and I haven't watched anyone play in weeks.
Is this going to be available for everyone or only certain people at legendary ranks?

Everyone, but through 3rd party platform.
This seems like a horrible idea for eSport viewers. The tournaments I enjoy watching have a high variety of decks to see rather than the same deck every time. Awful backwards choice.

I was hoping they would adopt another format I've seen recently. I can't remember the name, but their would be multiple ban and pick rounds until all hero choices were picked or eliminated. This seemed to increase the variance of decks played over the entire tournament.

I'd love to hear some dev feedback about how they came to this being a good choice for the health of the game, eSports, and what other formats they considered and did not choose.
I actually kinda like this. Like, quite a bit.

Granted, Hearthstone eSports still cracks me up as a concept in general, but we'll see if the rest of 2019 changes my views on that.
I'm not a fan tbh, at least not with the current levels of that P-word that I'm sick of seeing thats in the game atm. I cant see 5 cards being swapped actually achieving anything tbh, and as a viewer I really don't think I would find it entertaining in any form.

I think thats "Strike" format, and I would prefer that as well. I've been wanting to try it in our Commoner's Cup, but its probably a bit too complex for our casual events.
