Silencing Players is Inherently Toxic

Think about it. Why would you ever want a player silenced? You have absolutely nothing to gain from it. You can already mute a player if you don't wish to hear from them again.

Every time I hear someone talking about reporting players, it is always in a hateful or vengeful way. Sometimes, they report because the player is bad. Sometimes because they don't like his pick. He didn't tank. He didn't heal. He took a second specialist. He took murky. And yes, sometimes because he is toxic.

But what does silencing a toxic player do for you? Nothing. It is only a way for you to seek revenge for what he said. Or what he did. Or what he didn't do.

The point is, the silencing system is a tool used to inflict harm on other players.

Others have already mentioned the possibility of the system being abused and it's an important point.

But whether it works as intended or not doesn't matter. It does not reward the player who reports others in any way. It provides them no benefit. It only causes others harm.

There is so much in-game toxicity arising out of the ability to silence others that I fear the new policy has been largely counter-productive. Players have been handed another tool to annoy others with.

I feel like every other thread is about whether or not appealing silences works, but no one is talking about whether or not banning silenced players is in any way beneficial to the community. And it is not.

And what does that do? If your problem with them is that they were chatting abusively, then they can't do that if they are muted.

Also when you report someone, it doesn't mean they won't be matched with you again. Only if you reported him after he was already reported by many others will that ban him out of HL. So you never actually get to see the players you reported become silenced. It's pointless.

And what does that do?
Less toxic players in our HL games
Think about it, why would you want to insult and abuse a random person in a game, that is worth absolutely zero nothings.

The first stone was cast by the toxic person. There needs to be a silence, otherwise these kids will continue to ruin the game of the next team, and the next, and the next.

You might not think it, but as soon as you say gg at 2 minutes, your 4 team mates know one thing - "I can't rely on this guy to help us win." You might still try your guts out, but you set the mood for the match. Then you blame the rest of the team, when you basically announced at minute 2 "I'm not invested in this match anymore." That is the true toxic.

By giving this player a silence, we are helping the next group of people who may have had to put up with their performances. We don't get anything from it, so reporting is for the community as a whole. I hope you can understand that.
A fair silence might be alright for someone that been caught bad mouthing again and again. And that is my case. I won't pretend "8 times and i'm a saint, what the heck?".

But the point is i'm aswell a GrandMaster. And it's pretty obvious that silenced or not i'm a powerhouse.

It would be delirious to pretend that bronze/silver players, with their chat on, are a better addition to Hl than me, GrandMaster, even silenced.

That said the system is rubbish. It punishes high volume players and hardcore players. If you play few games here and then, you can say whatever you want and never get caught.

But if you play high volume like me, you need to watch closely every word you say. And you get banned 4 months for "this usless xxxx". No matter how good were your others games and how much you might carry in the games you argue a little bit too much. What kind of a system is that?

The system is just a fraud intended to fight against bad mouthing but it does zero against trolling and freelosing. It just rose suspicion and delation at their highest degrees. False and light reports are now a norm and everybody uses them in order to release their own frustration rather than express themself.

That also mean less good players as well.In preseason I reached rank 1 while silenced was 10 when got my silence then and still went to 1.Got my Daimon3 after placemnt and 52% win rate this season until I got my silence. Why beacuse I pin for team to not go in team fight were we are talent down and not gonna get it if we don't soak xp but they go, die and report me for refusing to suicdie with them.Since now I and many other "toxic" won't be in HL don't be surprise by the increase amount of people in HL who can't draft and play properly for their rank but I might be wrong seeing how things are going is becoming normal Diamond league players to have 0 map awarness, 0 idea what you do when your talent behind, 0 idea of team comp syn. and so on.Soon this will be in Master as well but important thing is all the toxic players who called the noob, "noob" are now ban out.

No it doesn't LOL will ban their PROs from the LCS for being overly toxic while playing LOL.

If the best LoL players in the world can manage to play without being toxic so can the HoTS players.

Actually, no. In my case, the first stone is cast by my teammates because I like to play Abathur. I am very good with him, but my teammates never want me to take him in HL (because they aren't good with him). They continue insulting me and think they lose objectives because "it's 4v5" and I am not allowed to answer or explain just how bad they are. If I do answer, I have just legitimized their 4 reports for taking abathur.

They are toxic, abusive players. And because there is more of them reporting than being reported, they never get silenced.

You have plenty to gain from it. You are improving the community so that no one has to hear their vitriol for the duration of their silence (or maybe ever, if the silence convinces them to change their ways).

Irrelevant. Muting does not solve the problem at all. It is not a license for you to say whatever garbage comes to your mind in your games.

Reporting is the appropriate choice as it solves the issue both for the current game and for people who may be grouped with the toxic player in the future.
This "Blizzard is bullying me because I'm bullying others" is kind of hilarious to see.

It's the ultimate spoiled-child-suddenly-has-to-face-reality logic.

I bet locking up criminals is inherently a crime as well, right? God forbid anything be done for the greater good. Especially removing harmful people from the community.
A silenced player complaining about his silence, how cute.

Congrats, and you don't know exactly why they were silenced either...you are putting too much faith in the system.

Tell me, when's the last game you played with a toxic player?

Think about it
Indeed you are right, toxic players should be banned, not just silenced.

Saying gg at two minutes is in no way abusive chat. GG does not mean they stopped being invested, it means their expectations for match have dropped massively. They are not going to now perform poorly because of it. I've met many of you who somehow get upset when someone says gg, it's the same thing as saying RIP or "rekt" or whatever else...even when referring to themselves. I hope you can understand that you're not "helping the community" by reporting someone for saying "gg".

Funny, because those are exactly the types of people who reported me to get my silence. I do not say those things, it's not part of my vocabulary.

LOL's definition of toxic is WAY different than "useless" or "gg". Holy hell, I can't believe you don't realize this. The pros that are banned make racist, sexist, homophobic remarks. In HOTS, you can be banned for saying "reported".

Blizzard isn't bullying anyone, they're giving the keys to the community to bully people with the report system when they've run out of words to say...whether they're toxic or not. The current system is harmful to good people, believe it or not.
Abusive chat reporting has become a tool to punish players who make non-meta hero picks

Blizzard's way of defending themselves with this new silence not allowed in ranked rule is to cherry-pick chat logs and publicly shame players who complain about the problem

I was silenced in overwatch too, within 24 hours of the game going live. Was a 24 hour silence. The e-mail I received contained no logs of what I typed to become silenced. Why? Because I typed nothing. I was silenced because players reported me for constantly playing widowmaker. Blizzard's overwatch developers understood this abuse and that is exactly why abusive chat reporting is no longer a thing in overwatch. Players are no longer silenced in overwatch. The hots team needs to make the same change.
