Why HOTs not popular?

General Discussion
I've never considered a game with over a million active users to be unpopular.

For me, HOTs is such a good game, easy to play and also fun;
able to win game with team fight or just lane pushing;
and the game can be super short or super long;
why it isn't popular? it is a good game fir sure.

Bad matchmaking, at all levels, in all game modes. plain and simple.

Hots has the appeal, its got the mechanics, the gameplay....... but it lacks the most important thing any pvp game could ever have.....

And which any online game lacks. I dont want to argue about this topic but pretty much all the online games i played have bad mm(by this i mean someone ALWAYS underpreforms). All of em.Played smite,DotA and paladins and all have unbalanced mm.I think LoL aint better. In LoL,DotA and smite you mostly play solo at start or with supp in duo lane so its harder to notice those 1 or 2 bad players.

Also ranked is way better. As it is in these other games.And yes there are bad players there as well.So no HotS even now does not have a "worse" mm.Its quite similar to those other games.Its no defined roles that fuk mm since synergy between heroes is what is important.A better team is just, if not more important then playing better.This game is often won at draft.

Pick ana against alex and they are toast if they cant get to you.And the like.

The only argument for worse mm is that here you depend on good teammates.You NEED em to win.Actually you dont need good teammates. Just ones who know kinda what to do at your lvl of play and want to work as a team.

So yeah i played all those games + WoT and this is my most fun game even now. I barely noticed this worse mm. Same crap as always and in all of those other games.

The sunk cost fallacy makes it so nobody wants to leave a game like that for a new one. This is especially true in the free to play model where entering an already established game has the added cost of not having the whole game on top of the learning curve.

I don't understand why people find that so hard to accept... instead we keep getting the whole "sunken cost" or "too late to the party" excuses that people find they need to make for the lack of popularity for this game

People enjoy the design philosophies of your game or they don't. The fact of the matter is that the market consensus has proven that the core design of HotS just does not appeal to most players.

Because one person cannot win a game, but one person can lose a game.

Specialists used to be able to push enough to carry.

Supports used to be able to heal enough to carry.

Tanks, though it was hard, used to be able to Lead enough to carry, I guess thats not totally gone.

Mainly the only way to carry now is to play an assassin and blow stuff up.
They joined the market a bit late.
Game crashed,Reconnecting problem,Terrible matchmaking system etc. but mostly fundamental problem that doesn't occur in other MOBA. They made people get tired of their own game easily with this problem.
I think most people like the reward of playing well or high skill play, individual wise (who doesn't like to show off). LOL promotes that, but HOT doesn't. You can't really shine by yourself in HOT (I mean it is more difficult in HOT than in LOL).
Because really good players cant carry if they's match with trash teammate.

Oversaturation in the US market, which is the only market Blizzard is hitting hard.

China is mostly into DOTA since thats where the money is, and other foreign countries only have DOTA as a choice in most cases so they play that.

Casuals are into League because its honestly better balanced (which isn't saying much.), its what they know, and there are way more characters and more r34 of it.

Wow you know nothing...

LoL is bigger in China than DOTA is. Hell, LoL is bigger than any other game in any given country right now.

HotS isn't successful (and will never be) because it's designed way too casually to appeal to MOBA players. Only a very small subset of players would enjoy stuff like shared xp, no items and no laning phase. We enjoy it of course, but the truth is MOST people DON'T.
Plus hots refuses to fix their abusive chat feature.
They went too much all in for Overwatch when it was released.

I am not sure why, the FPS crowd is so flakey without any loyalty, they are moving onto Fortnight already in droves, you are not going to see Overwatch No.1 on Twich anymore and their audience declines each day.

They should of catered more to bored Diablo and StarCraft fans.

Well some may say that DOTA players are inured to like this mechanics and they are not objectivly better.

Like if you actively switched the timelines with HOTS first before League... people would say things like "gee this tedious last hitting and clunky itemization is really a drag". Being later to the party you have to contend with peoples' pre-conceived notions about the genre.

They have look a like MMR issue in this game as HOTS have

Blizzard have difficulties with their PVP game (excluding SC, more about 1v1 than anything else)
because the big issue right now is QM and MMR. I really hope the next big patch is a huge fix with both rank and UD/QM. the game needs to be fixed a huge path that fixes a lot of problems.
