CDC #5 - Unsung Page Turners

Hero and Skin Suggestions
Some heroes overcome great challenges, but are forgotten by the tides of history. The small, hidden gems of the universes forever unable to compete with the legends of their era...

Hello and welcome! This is the Concept Design Contest #5 - Unsung Page Turners thread. Here, over the course of this week, you will create a brand new concept based on the following criteria and provide a link to it here. Please leave a comment if you are signing up for the contest below, and use that comment to deliver the link to the thread. The contest will have three judges, who will each take one week to look over the designs, commenting and helping out with the design. All dates are set to allow the maximum time, and the deadlines will be at 11:59 Eastern Standard Time. The thread must be submitted at exactly 11:59, and there will be no exceptions.

Theme: For this contest, we will test the ability of the concept creator to forge a design with no game guideline to guide it. Every characters must be a character from one of the short stories of one of the Blizzard universe, either from the Warcraft shorts, Starcraft shorts, Diablo Shorts, or Overwatch comics. Preference should be given to characters who do not play a large role in the game of their respective universe (so no Doomfist, for example). This is to test the ability of the concept designer to create something fresh, with a deep look into the story behind the character. Thematic will be highly important in this challenge. Sign-Up
Saturday, June 2
Come one, come all! Every sign-up today preferably, but if you missed the day, go ahead and leave a comment over week 1 and you will be accepted into the contest still. The judges will be WhoYouExpect, Bliztron, and Luc. Judges are not able to make concepts themselves.

Week One
Sunday, June 3 - Saturday, June 9
This week is for the base concept. This is simply the abilities and the role. Remember, the role is very important, and part of the judging will be on how well the abilities fit together under a role. If it doesn’t fit under any role, make sure you make it a Specialist. This is the only week for sign-up, so make sure you give us something before the week is up! WhoYouExpect will be the judge that will comment on the Sunday that follows.

Week Two
Monday, June 11 - Saturday, June 16
This week is for the talents. This means a fully fleshed out talent tree set up with the tiers in order. Make sure your talents are interesting and creative, but still fit with the character and design as a whole. You should touch up on your abilities based on week 1 feedback, as that will also be considered in week 2 judging. I, Bliztron, will comment on the Sunday that follows.

Week Three
Monday, June 18 - Saturday,June 23
This week is for the finishing touches. This includes fluff, stats, additional notes, skins, and whatever else you want to add. This has an element of freedom to it, but to give yourself the best shot, you should probably make your concept sell itself. Make the judges become immersed in your concept. Luc will be the judge that will comment on the Sunday that follows.

Week Four
Monday, June 25 - Saturday, June 30
This week is the last week for changes to the concept. All major work should be finished by this week, and major changes are risky. Each of the judges will keep a close eye on the concepts, coming to their own opinions. The judges will have all commented feedback and ratings as they saw fit over the last three weeks, so you will have some idea as to what each of us are looking for. At this point, just make sure to touch up your design and make it truly sparkle.

Finale
Sunday, July 1 - Monday, July 2
All changes are closed. The judges will gather to determine who is the ultimate winner of the contest, announcing the winner sometime on Monday.
The following information will be about the judging structure and how points will be fully evaluated. On each Sunday, a comment will be posted with the following rubric filled out, and then another post will be created explaining a detailed analysis on the concept, giving thorough feedback. These points add on to your total, and at the end, each person will have a score out of 60. Make sure you gather as many points as you can during the first three weeks, but do not be afraid if you fall slightly behind, as some promising changes could really make the difference in the final week.

Final Week
-/10 Creativity
-/10 Cohesiveness
-/10 Thematic
-/10 Interaction
-----------------------------
-/40 Final Verdict
(+2 Thoughtfulness, +2 Game Fluidity) [+4 bonus total]

The final score and the winner will be taken from whoever has earned the best score. If any tie should occur, then the judges will all agree on a single winner. There will be a single winner, and one runner up.

Creativity: This is how creative the design of the character is, and how creative the actual choice was. While a big name will certainly win you some points for awe factor, a particularly clever choice and design may edge out the victory.

Cohesiveness: This is representative of how well the design fits together, and how well it works with the role and gameplay style you are trying to accomplish. This score will mainly be in relation to a gameplay identity we feel you are trying to give off.

Thematic: These points are mainly for how well the ideas fit with the character. A demon that is a butcher of man would not really be a gentle healer than encourages his allies to do better. Make sure that when creating your character, you will also look towards what they would actually be doing.

Interaction: Interaction is the interaction your character has with allies, and enemies. How the character feels to play with and against is a crucial part of the character’s design, one so crucial it deserves a place in the rubric. Killing your entire team to power yourself may be fun for you, but it would not be fun for your allies, and the character design as a whole would suffer for it. Consider your character in the game, fighting against him and alongside him.

Winner: Broodlisk, Champion of the Swarm (Deefe)
Hey, not submitting my concept yet, 'cause I haven't finished thinking about it, but I wanted to mention the link you provide for Diablo shorts has literally only half of them.

The whole collection (AFAIK) can be found here:
https://us.diablo3.com/en/game/
at the bottom of the page, under "SHORT STORIES" in the middle.

Just in case anyone wants to base their design on one of the other stories.

edit: also, the "other Starcraft shorts" gave me a 404, for some reason...

edit 2: Here's the link to my entry, hope I'm not too late (I have until 11:59 p.m. EST, right?):

Well this is certainly a harder theme than the last few, I've got some reading to do.

Ok finished the Base Concept, its Pearly From Fighting SceeVee's.

Someone should make Adun and Gestalt Zero
Weren't kidding bout a hard one specially to someone who has written book characters before.
Welp, seeing as the only Blizzard texts I've ever read are one Warcraft novel and the Overwatch comics, this might be harder than I expected. Throwing my hat into the ring anyways, just got to think of... Oh, wait! Thought of something! Hold on, I've got to go check some wiki pages!
Wait, are Character's from Novels out of the question?

From what i've gathered from Bliztron a few hours ago its short stories only and not novel ones :( which is a shame there had a novel one planned recently anyway haha.

That makes things substantially harder. Probably for the best though. Had we included novels half of everyone would have just chosen Kabraxis. Including me.

I wouldn't xP cause i already wrote him! hahaha, i would've went with Ulrezaj.
The feel when you've already got ideas about character in War3, but there's likely 1% for them to appear in these short stories...

I wanted to restrict it to shorts so everyone would have access to the same material, and the playing field would be level. I hope that seems fair.
Count me in! Quick question, are we allowed to use other websites to post our concepts? I like HeroesFire but if that's not allowed I can move over to the forums.

You can use HeroesFire, but you must make a topic on this forum as well so the judges can easily post their judgments. What you can do is make a HeroesFire concept and then make a topic on this forum with a link to your hero.
I can see that you're challenging us to come up with our own unique ideas.
This should be a strong test of our ability to create a fun kit. I'm in!
God damn it i literally just released Green Eyes and turns out he's a short story!.

Green Eyes was my first choice too. Then I realized no one on Heroesfire had a Sanjay (OW) concept, so I decided to get on that bandwagon instead.
Still can't think of a second Heroic though...

I notice 'short stories' and I think Overwatch shorts. While you only gave a link, being to a comic, I want to know, can the animated shorts count for this contest?

Sure, that sounds fine as well. I'm excited to see all of your submissions everyone!
