We have four universes full of iconic characters to make a story with.

Nah, let's just make comics about map announcers instead. That's definitely the correct move.

Stories we've seen before. I'd rather have original stories rather than fanboy wank material.
Map announcers man it's the future
It's a little strange that the main attractions for the game seem to be relegated to background characters.
it'd be seriously cool if they made non-canon in-game stories out of the dead characters of Blizzard franchises in the Nexus

That they would be spending elsewhere on what?

The writers / animators for the comic have no influence or even capacity to be put to work for anything in the game's assets.
Their time doesn't detract from the time of the programmers or modelers.
Their paycheck doesn't detract from the paychecks for the employees blizzard has all ready set for maintaining or improving HotS.

So what, precisely, is being wasted for what is effectively an advertisement?

Money.

Money that could go towards hiring more people for the art team to design skins for characters who only have one or two skin variations so far.

Money that would go towards programmers (and, again, the art team) for designing more battlegrounds. Or more heroes.

Money that would go towards overtime for the developers to design, test and release hero reworks quicker. Or more developers to rebalance more heroes at once.

Or maybe just putting that money towards another game. Like a new Diablo. Or maybe giving Overwatch an actual campaign instead of the occasional video that pretends the game has an actual plot.

Anything besides a comic book about the Raven Lord. Nobody cares about the Raven Lord. We play a game that features heroes from other games. We don’t give a !@#$ what Ted from accounting drew on a cocktail napkin.

You’re not wrong, though - this is effectively just an advertisement, and that’s why they put money into it. Just like why they put money into creating these amazing cartoon intros for what is basically three new skins. They can make a direct profit off of the comic books and might get more people playing. No sense in putting more money into delivering more content to those of us who are already hooked.

Just gonna bring up, I might be mistaken about this, but I'm under the impression that Blizzard (as a whole, not just the HotS team) actually has a small "Comics production department".
and they're the same people who make the Overwatch comics, the HotS comics, and recently some Hearthstone comics as well.

If I'm right about that (again, I'm not really sure), then that comics team was getting payed anyway and probably didn't have other assignments, so they got this.

In other words, the money spent on the comics was being spent anyway, 'cause they created that team to advertise OW regularly.

Course stories of them have already been told in their respective universes....
We need a story with Brightwing and Lunara, since they are HotS creations.

Considering that Lunara is a dryad... originating from the WoW universe... and Brightwing is a faerie-dragon again originating from the WoW universe.
