Overview of XP system for anybody interested

Hi Blizz Community,

Love the game and having great fun.

A lot of my friends in-game have been asking about the XP system, so I thought I would post on it here for anybody who has questions.

Equally importantly, I hope I will show and demystify the system so you see the game is priced so you can actually reasonably earn everything yourself. This isn't HOTS where some things you have to pay for or other F2Ps where you can technically earn everything but in 60 years. You can get everything in Overwatch with 1-3 months worth of hours played making the loot box purchases completely unnecessary

You earn XP through a variety of methods:

1) Time - You get 3.4 XP per second (this was decreased from 4.01 xp per second in beta, meaning you now, overall, earn 10-12% less XP per hour in total across all sources)
2) Medals - You get 50 XP for a bronze, 100 XP for silver and 150 XP for a gold medal. You can only earn XP for one medal per match (max 150 total)
3) Finished the game - 250 XP
4) Winning - 500 XP
5) Consecutive Matches - 200 XP
6) Back-filling a match in-progress - 400 XP
7) First day's win - 1500 XP
8) Group bonuses - 20% for playing with friends

Additionally, you level from 1-100, and then "prestige" at 100, going back to 1 and getting a new portrait. Here are the XPs to level and get a loot box by level:

Level 1 1500
Level 2 3000
Level 3 4500
Level 4 6000
Level 5 7500
Level 6 8500
Level 7 9500
Level 8 10500
Level 9 11500
Level 10 12500
Level 11 13500
Level 12 14500
Level 13 15500
Level 14 16500
Level 15 17500
Level 16 18500
Level 17 19000
Level 18 19500
Level 19 20000
Level 20 20500
Level 21 21000
Level 22 21500
Levels 23-100 22000

Here are some calculations in practice for how this would work. Let's say you play for an hour a day, and each match is 10 minutes long. Let's say on average you get a silver medal per match, you finish each match, you play six consecutively, and you win 50% of games.

Match 1 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 500 for win, 1,500 for first win of the day = 4,390 XP
Match 2 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 200 XP for a consecutive match = 2,590 XP
Match 3 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 500 XP for a win, 200 XP for a consecutive match = 3,090 XP
Match 4 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 200 XP for a consecutive match = 2,590 XP
Match 5 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 500 XP for a win, 200 XP for a consecutive match = 3,090 XP
Match 6 - 2040 XP for time, 100 for silver, 250 for finished match, 200 XP for a consecutive match = 2,590 XP

Total XP = 18,340 if you play solo, 22,008 if you're in a group

Here is where each hour of consecutive play will get you:

Hour 1 - Level 5
Hour 2 - Level 7
Hour 3 - Level 9
Hour 4 - Level 10
Hour 5 - Level 12
Hour 6 - Level 13
Hour 7 - Level 15
Hour 8 - Level 16
Hour 9 - Level 17
Hour 10 - Level 18
Hour 11 - Level 19
Hour 12 - Level 20
Hour 13 - Level 21
Hour 14 - Level 22
Hours 15-93 - Roughly one level each until you prestige again at level 100

Thus, every 93 hours of gameplay will get you about 100 loot boxes, or 1.08 loot boxes per hour, if you play in groups OR 112 hours of gameplay or 0.90 loot boxes per hour if you play solo

It is hard to say how many loot boxes you will have to open to get everything, given I know how many player icons, skins, etc. there are now, but they will no doubt increase over time

To keep things simple, I know there are about 170 skins. But there are also player icons, emotes, sprays, voice lines, victory poses and highlight intros.

I am going to estimate the number of items at about 1,200. And each lootbox has 4 items, but you have to statistically account for the fact that they are random.

Thus, my estimate is you would need to open about 950 loot boxes to have a decent shot of getting everything.

At this rate, grouped, you would need 884 hours of gameplay time, or 37 days, or 1,064 hours of gameplay time, or 44 days, ungrouped, assuming you get pretty lucky.

Of course, the statistical range is quite significant. If it's 37-44 days, when I ran it in Stata (a stats package), for you to be 95% sure you would get everything the range is from 37-105 days, so it would be up to 3 months of 24 hour playing if you get very unlucky.

Nonetheless, count on a month to two months of if you played 24 hours a day and are a lucky duck, maybe 2-3 times that if you're not. That's my best guess
Thanks, good to know. :-)
Cool post. Thanks for sharing.
I think they decreased xp gain because I swear I was leveling up way faster during the open beta!
Good post!

You are more right then you know Daxank - the XP per second was decreased from 4.01 to 3.4 xp per second, meaning you now earn 10-12% less XP per hour of gameplay than you used to
BigAlChubbs, you are one fine human being for posting this concise, well-researched information. Cheers.

Thanks mate - very thoughtful of you. Just keeping it real :)

BTW - if in HOTS people say "see you in the Nexus" or Warcraft players say "see you in Azeroth", where do we see each other in Overwatch? I was about to say "see you in ..." but I didn't know what to put in for the blank :)
Thank you for this wonderful thread. Understanding how things work makes me feel better about it.

... Bed?

I mean it seems like it fits with the Overwatch experience.
Thanks for the helpful post. I will be showing this to my buddy later.
This is super well done. Thanks!
Thanks for this! Will have to favorite it.
it doesnt seem like you're taking into account currency either, which could make a significant impact. at the point where it would take forever to get the exact item you need from a box, every box would be giving you 75-100 credits.

Hey Octavian - Love the username btw. Great point - I actually do have the boxes in my crazy model, but I wanted to keep this as straightforward as possible. I wish I could actually share the whole model with folks :) I think it's borderline sick/awesome to spend this much time having fun modeling loot dynamics in a game :)

To keep it simple, I do think the 37-105 day range is fair. I would say number in the 30s to low 40s assume credits and a bit of luck. The high end is the much rougher end of the range and assumes you keep rolling duplicates :)

Thanks for the note!

So happy to hear it. I thought many didn't have this info and it is reassuring to know that is true!

I only get 50 from them, can they drop more?
It's actually levels 23 to infinity that are 22k XP each level.

The XP requirement does not grow beyond those levels.

Right - that's what I put but it resets at 100
Ps Kaplan and team you made my co-favorite Blizzard game ever, alongside WoW and WoW 3, back to Silicon and Synapse. Thought I would never say that again. Bravo and bless you!
