Packet Loss/ Lag

Technical Support
Hello, Up until after the Halloween patch I've had no problems playing Overwatch but now I've been experiencing elastic banding and lag issues.

I've restarted my router, computer (HP running Windows 10) and adjusted my Virtual Memory parameters but I'm still having trouble. I've literally never had trouble before... Is there an easy fix for this? I've looked into the issue a little but I'm really not the best at this kind of thing...

Any help is appreciated, thanks
Hey Grimjoy!

Can you start with trying the troubleshooting HERE. If you're still having issues after that please get back with a screenshot of your network graph from in-game during the latency. As well as let's get a WinMTR:
  • First, download the WInMTR program
  • To run this you’ll want to right click on the .exe and select run as admin or you’ll likely get an error.
  • In the “Host” field you want to put in the server IP. In the case of Overwatch, you'll want to use the IP that is at the top left of the network graph from above.
  • Click Start and now we want to run this while you’re playing the game. So go ahead and log in.
  • Let this run for roughly 10-20 minute intervals while you play until you start to have latency.
  • Once you’re sure that you have the ~10-20 minutes of latency recorded. Press the stop button and just select the option for “Export TEXT”.
  • Save the file as something easy to remember on the desktop and post here.
  • Exact same thing happened to me, but the troubleshoot guide seemed to work, on my 3rd game now trying to see if it did work. Good luck!
I tried everything so I pulled up that graph and used the WinMTR. Might be doing this wrong but here it goes:

So there is dataloss starting at the modem, is this a combo device or do you have a modem and router? Also, can you get me the screenshot if the in-game network graph while you're having the issue please.

I do use a modem and a router. Not sure if the router is the problem... My internet provider did say there were supposed upgrades happening.

Anyway here's a screenshot (not sure how to upload pics so here is a link) :

    http://itsjustolee.tumblr.com/image/152840543707
Thanks for the screenshot. I would say there is for sure a major issue. Looking at the graph your Packets Per Second is 0 in the screenshot. So basically there is no data that the client is getting.

This could be caused by the work the ISP is doing or possibly even blocked ports. So let's make sure to open the ports for the modem and router device. With this, we actually don't have steps for opening those ports, so you'll need to use a site like Portforward.com or contact your ISP/Device manufacturer for support if needed.

any way to translate this for me? i have it hook directly to my modem, i have a airport extreme but i wanted to see if it did it during direct connection to my arris SB6190 and it still gets random packet loss
This is probably a problem right when you start a game but not the game client. I've been having the same problem and it looks to me that the game itself is working but the games that you play with other players, their internets aren't seeming to integrate with each other. They aren't using eachother's internet feedback. See how all of it is completely working along halfway and then completely falls after 100% contacted? I feel as if all the routing is just falling when everyone bundles in for a game of capture the flag or something. Btw if you're having issues buying loot for Overwatch, go on the site or shop on battle.net app for the lootboxes using whatever info and there you go. The in-game one isn't working i think because it isn't hooked up completely to the internet, maybe they are upgrading it along with the game. Although after you buy them you still have the ability to open them also, so don't worry about that

im confused by what you just wrote lol
Having the exact same issue. Trying to get as much help as possible so I can pass it along to the numerous amounts of players that experience tremendous ping spikes/rubberbanding, and unplayable content due to this "packet loss/connectivity problem". Internet is fine but OW training room and beyond is not! Keep posting blue you're helping a lot of people.

i keep getting that packet loss symbol ping will shoot up to like 1500-2000 then back to 10-15 ping. i live in SoCAL, i have TWC and my downloads are 100 down. i cant figure out.

so guys i think i figured out the issue, for me it was my SB6190 modem.....Mind u all this rubber banding and random spikes in ping was when i first moved into my new apartment about six month ago, at my old condo never had this issues. This would happen every time i played, ping would be around 12-15 then shoot up to 1500+ then back down. This was extremely frustrating I tried everything out, opening ports on my router and directly connecting my modem to the pc, it would still continue to occur, so i figured by a new modem and see if the issue persists. so far no ping spikes with my new ASUS CM16 modem.

here is the article backing up the issue with the SB6190
    http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/The-Arris-SB6190-Modem-Puma-6-Chipset-Have-Some-Major-Issues-138411

So maybe all those having this issue is due to you having the SB6190. Hope this helps some people out there.
I've followed all the steps on blizzard's official network troubleshooting page including restarting my router, flushing dns, restarting my wifi adapter, connecting via ethernet, following the port forward steps on both my firewall and through following the steps for port forward for my AT&T router and I still get disconnected during a game. I get 7ms of ping in game but then it jumps to over 2000 and after a bit I get disconnected and shown to the login screen with the error "Lost connection to game Server" and asks me to login again when I have my settings to remember my login authentication. When I put in my login credentials at that screen I get put back into the game but I am unable to access any voice channel, then after a bit I will get disconnected again anyways.

I am only able to play if I keep on trying and it seems to work at random when no variables have changed on my end. But when I try to login again the next day I get the same process of getting kicked out of most of my games and its causing me to get a lot of penalties. Please tell me a way to fix this or tell me what is wrong. I am able to use every other internet application fine besides this one. I even have a stable connection when I play SC2, which doesn't seem to make sense to me because that is also a blizzard game.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Every once in a while (once every 15-30 seconds or so) I get out of order packets, or dropped packets. Ctrl+Shift+N just shows a single read peak during this event, nothing extraordinary otherwise.

Tracing to 185.60.115.149 directly is giving me no troubles, but a different route shows up (is that normal?).
