German fascists using the Overwatch logo

General Discussion
Edit: Before you scroll down, I was informed by some knowledgeable users that the symbol is based on the "Lambda" symbol from Greece and that the party has used the symbol way back before OW was announced. So I was worried for the wrong reason here and the thread kinda loses its meaning. Thanks for posting, though! :)

I'm from Germany and right now, there's a fascist / racist / right-wing extremist movement called "Die Identitären" (the identitarians in English) getting some attention in the press. It's sad enough that there are still idiots who didn't learn from our country's past, yet there is still a very stupid, very loud minority running through our country.

So what has this to do with Overwatch?

They're using a logo that looks like the Overwatch logo. Here's a comparison:

Can and will Blizzard do anything against this? I'm pretty sure that this is copyright infringement. Especially here in Germany, those racist idiots start emulating trends and brands that are popular with young people.
overwatch was shut down for a reason, better stay this way
To be fair. Blizz doesn't really own circle shaped symbols.

It's a crappy situation, I get that. But I'm not entirely sure they were going for the OW symbol.
It's not too similar, I doubt blizzard could force them to change it.
They are using the greek lambda sign in a circle for their logo. This has nothing to do with Overwatch.

Due to its popularity all around the world, and the almost exact same shape (save for the area in the center where the OW logo ends before touching and the identitarian logo just blends together), I'd say it's at least pretty obvious that they were going for a faux version of a popular blend. There's a difference between a simple circle and the OW logo, imo. The adidas logo only contains three stripes, yet it's copyrighted and other brands can't use it.
You're late to the party. Not to mention that the Overwatch logo isn't really unique per se.

Have there been threads about this already? Didn't see any, didn't mean to re-ignite a topic that might've been talked about already. Just seemed fishy to me.

Oh I didn't know that. Still, the timing seems strange to me. If you follow the extremist right, you know that they try everything to appeal to young people. The swastika wasn't an original invention as well, but it was abused by the !@#$s and inflated with a new, vile meaning.

No, I meant about this party. They've been around before OW even existed (I'm German, so I see this group spewing bs a lot on the news/in live).

And have they used the logo before OW was announced? I had the feeling that this logo was pretty new.

You can see them using the logo even way back in 2014.

Thanks man! I guess I was wrong about this then. Learning something new every day. :)

Imagine someone walking down the street and thinking this is a overwatch party.
Either way; best not give them the attention they want.

Agreed! I edited a bit into the start of my post so we can put this thread away.

Die Identitären are founded in 2012 in Austria and 2014 in Germany. I have found some articles from 2013 or 2012 about them (http://www.spiegel.de/lebenundlernen/schule/identitaere-rechtsextreme-islamfeinde-machen-auf-jugendbewegung-a-880400.html for instance) where you can see this logo).

http://www.taz.de/!5382279/ gives you some hints why these guys are using lambda.
Edit: You know what? totally not worth it. you keep on sanctioning censorship fella.

And I'd think that a lot of young, especially white and male, people will have heard of Overwatch already and know the difference between the two.
1) They're using Lambda symbol. The people you want to sue for your hurt feelings are Ancient Greeks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greece

2) There is literally nothing wrong with the Identitarian movement.

3) This isn't the discussion for the forums.
