Major FPS drop since 23 Jan 2018

Ok, looks like mine is fixed. I turned off Windows 10 update, scanned and repaired the Overwatch files via the Blizz app, and updated my nvidia drivers and now all is back to normal.

I've seen the scan and repair thing work for a couple of people so far, so I'd try that if any of you haven't yet.
Same issue here. Used to have 100 FPS based on the monitor refresh limit but now dropping to below 20 FPS?!

For some reason I just got hit with major FPS drop.

I have 1080,
6700k,
Temps are fine.
The usual stuff is up to date (drivers etc.)

Yesterday everything was normal.
I usually play the game on Ultra with limited 150 FPS because I got 144Hz screen
but now my FPS drop to 60-70 for no reason.
The game is unplayable on a 144Hz screen with 60-70 FPS...

Mod Note: Moving this to Tech Support so it can get the attention it needs.

try system restore to a date prior to the problem, could be an internal issue/virus

I tried that, it did not fix it.

Go to task manager, details, on overwatch select analyze wait chain, if it says you have a deadlock you have to download windows process explorer and execute the bottlenecked thread, everyone should check if they have this error, ive had it for a couple of months i dont know if its a defective cpu( probably not since its only OW and other people say they have it as well) but once you execute that thread your fps will be more stable.

also if anyone else does have this a screenshot of it would be helpful i think blizzard isnt aware of it

Also another thing possibly unrelated to what i said previously, but may also be causing fps drops across the board is the intel chipset patch which has been said to slow down your processor as much as 30% and there is currently a class action lawsuit https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/09/meltdown_spectre_slowdown/

Already did that, no changes. Thx for the info.

I'm gonna give you a fix guys. I wanted to post on the other post that had 26 pages but apparently it reached its limit so I'll post the fix here and I hope the others see it.

I was running OW smoothly for a year and a half with no problems whatsoever then suddenly I woke up one day and my fps dropped from a stable 160+ to 25.
None of the fixes I found on the internet worked. The only thing that worked for me was a clean re-install of the Nvidia driver through DDU but then after a couple days it happened again. LUCKILY though I noticed that Windows 10 auto downloaded an update called "NVIDIA - Display (etc etc)" so I figured that must be what is causing the problem and I was right.

**********FIX***********
-Search "Device Manager"
-Under Display Adapters double click on your Graphics Card, for me it's Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M
-Go to Driver and click on Roll Back
-Restart your computer and happy birthday

This problem will pop up again if you don't cancel auto Windows updates or set your connection to metered considering Windows Update constantly searches for outdated drivers and auto updates them. So keep that in mind.

Hope this helped you guys :)

This helped for 1 of my PCs that has Windows 10, thanks.
But the problem is still here for my 2 other PCs, Win 7 and Win 8.1.

Basically what this does is it uninstalls nVidia drivers and installs Microsoft Windows drivers for the GPU.

Still 60 Fps in menus. Meant to say in-game and in match.

Op try this:

SOLVED!

Posting so others can avoid my pain.

NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings > Preferred refresh rate (DELL AW2518HF) > HIGHEST AVAILABLE

&

NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Overwatch.exe > Preferred refresh rate (DELL AW2518HF) > HIGHEST AVAILABLE

&

NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Overwatch (overwatch launcher).exe > Preferred refresh rate (DELL AW2518HF) > HIGHEST AVAILABLE

Sigh of relief.

I did that since the moment i bought the game.
Try a DSN Flush! It worked for me.

My fps are lower than 10 in game, it's unplayable, I tried everything Blizzard said I should try, but it's even worse now. It's definitely not my pc, so fix it please. I can't play your game I paid for.

I take what i said back. My problem all along was a RoKu stick.
Was playing at steady 240 fps till last week, now barely getting 200fps...
Just tried this small fix ma dudes:

Disabling the DiagTrack , also known as the connected user experiences and telemetry service, is also said helpful for handling Windows 10 FPS drops glitch for the Creators Update.

1. Click the Start button, and then type Servives to open the Servives App.

2. Locate “Connected User Experiences and Telemetry” under the Services (Local) category and then double-click it.

3. Click “Stop” in the “Service status” section.

4. Select "Disabled" under the "Startup type" drop down menu and then click "OK" to save changes.

Check whether the FPS dropping and game freezing bug persists or not.
___________________________
Played only one game by now FPS became much more stable. Can't say for sure, need to play more but it worth a try.
Update:

Tested the game on 3 more PCs (friends) and the game is losing FPS even on theirs.

Its a Game Problem, not a hardware.

That did nothing.
To summarise:

  • Tested 6 PC in total
  • Tested Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 on all 6 PC
  • Tested for 4 different OS-es drivers, back to 3 version of drivers (ALL drivers) for 6 different PC
  • Tested 6 different PC with 1 Display or multiple with all OS-es
  • Tested all suggestion mention on the Internet and this forum
  • Tested other games on all 6 PC and on all 4 OS-es with 3 different versions of drivers
  • Overwatch is the only game that has this kind of FPS drops
  • The problem is still here

I will record one session of me playing Overwatch to show you that the FPS problem is real.
Unfortunately I do not have the hardware around here that I tested the "solutions" on so I cannot do the tests again just to record it.

And there is still no answer from Blizzard.
Hey Mj711/all

Looks like a bunch of people are collecting on this thread. It's very possible you folks have different reasons for your FPS issues. We see this kind of thread with literally every patch we release because each patch changes something, and we then have to figure out what's conflicting with those changes for each player. You can see this if you go through the different player posts in this thread - several different patches are being quoted as "the cause" here.

It's definitely possible there's something up with a recent patch, but we don't currently think that's the case. Usually when we see players that have performance issues just in Overwatch, it has something to do with some third party program conflict or some setting you're running.

For now, I want to just focus on Mj711, since performance issues are in depth, they've already done a bunch, and this is their thread. If we start seeing trends I might need to ask some more of you for details. I know you've tried this on multiple machines, but I need to get information on the high powered computer you're mentioning in the first post so we can figure out if this is expected or not.

1. Does it improve at all if you lower the graphics settings all the way to the lowest setting?
2. What FPS do you get at the lowest in game settings (your normal FPS and when you have FPS spikes)?
3. How often do you see the FPS drops, and in what situations do they happen?
4. Can you get us a screenshot of your FPS numbers and Network Graph when you have FPS problems? You'll want to upload this on another site and link it here.
5. I'd also like to look over a DXDiag for that computer. Can you generate that, copy the information from the .txt file, then paste that in code blocks using the </> button below?

For everybody else, you're welcome to post DXDiag files as well as the answers to the questions above, but I may not be able to help everybody in this thread. (It can get super confusing trying to troubleshoot multiple performance issues in one thread, so depending on what we find in those files, I may need you to have different threads so we can help each of you individually.)

Sorry this is messing with your performance, and hope we can finally find out what's going on here.

All settings on low, fps drops happen in fights. Usually I get stable 154fps and before patch there was a little fps drops to ~135fps or so (and I got high textures on, low shadows, x16 filtering and fxaa alias), now with all set on min fps dropping up to ~95fps in huge fights. I know my vga not high end, but dk, before the last patch everything was actually fine.

On my own PC:
i7-6700K
Armor 1080 OC
3000MHz RAM
SSD
Win7 SP1 Pro

1. Lowering the graphics settings increases my overall FPS, which is normal but there is no real improvement:
I still get FPS drops, independent of settings.
Even limiting the FPS will give a certain fps drops.
On low settings I get the feel that I have more constant FPS drops than on on ultra according to FPS numbers and Network Graph, which very weird.

2. and 3.:
On low settings I get overall 245 FPS.
And the there is no real rule where I would get the FPS drops, sometimes in spawn, sometimes in front of the spawn, sometimes in the middle of action.

On Ultra I would get around 180 FPS avg.

So if I get 245 FPS avg. I would drop to around 190 FPS (or lower) for a split second, that time the SIM would rise from 6.7ms to 60ms or more (max what I saw war 80ms).

If I limit the FPS to 150 FPS (what I usually do because I have 144Hz monitor), my FPS would drop to around 120 FPS (or lower).

In general, the FPS drop is from 15%% to 25% independent from settings or situation in game
OR
The FPS would stay around the same but that very short lag would still come from time to time.

It is very hard to pinpoint the timing of FPS drops because it is very fast but when playing I can feel it and see it, the game would just lag out, or better say, it would freeze for a split of a second.

I made a few screenshots.

Here you will see some old drivers because I flashed my old Image back.

What are you exactly looking for in DxDiag?

What I saw from my ingame Network Graph is that every time there is a spike, the sim would rise and something would change the latency.

So, is the Simulation changed because of the Latency or is Latency changed because of the Simulation ?
In the same time range there are no Packages in or out, which is really strange.
I have the same problem but in my case its even worst, i used to play in high graphics and now, after that bad update, im """"playing"""" in low graphics but it doesnt change my fps...

Well, as i said, my problem its even worst when i start a game i play with 55 fps (I usually played with 70fps stable in high graphics)while the more I play my fps go down more... Last time i played i had 20fps and keep going down :D

(Sorry if my english is bad btw)

I hope they fix it because i cant play the event like this
