Aug 13, 2012 Is my cpu holding back my gpu? now looking at blizzards recommendations for cpu they recommend having a dual core processor with a speed of 2.8 ghz. my cpu is a pentium d 915 dual core 2.8ghz processor. my gpu is a geforce gtx550 ti. I have problems getting a consistent frame rate of at least 30 frames. i get between 25 and 45 average but mostly around 27 fps. also i am looking at a laptop that has a i7 3620q processor. i want to run the game on at least medium, now will intel integrated 4000 run sc2 at all or do i need at least a gt 630m?DeAtHMaN1 Aug 13, 2012
Aug 12, 2012 What to upgrade? So i play at about 60-150 FPS, depending on whats going on in SC2... (Been glitchy since 1.5 though... !! boooooo) Anyway I have: AMD Phenom II x4 Black 9850 , 2.5ghz 4gb DDR3 1666 (2x2gb) Geforce GTX 460 (I remember it saying 756mb, but dxdiag says total memory is 2500mb?) A decent mobo.... Basically just looking to increase my FPS on medium settings; Or is the new performance issues entirely caused by 1.5? (Lags a bit at times, big battles. I have to detonate a baneling early game so that it gets that hitch out of the way, as well.)Malpractice6 Aug 12, 2012
Aug 12, 2012 Valve's new EULA and TOS... what now? Hey, somewhere about a week ago I logged into steam, they updated and prompted me with a TOS which I read as I always do. I didn't finish reading it after the section that assured me that I had no remedy outside of binding arbitration... and that there was no potential for class actions. /*edit Valves public statement: steam tos: edit */ This lead me to believe that Valve was up to something more than they were claiming... maybe they saw trouble ahead and envisioned a world where customers would be rebelling en mass and that a class action would bring them to their knees in the future... Realizing I did not actually have ownership of my steam library I disagreed to the TOS and did some research about it. If one does not agree to the new TOS within a certain period of time valve assures us that we will lose access to our accounts and games. So I am on the clock. I found a valuable discussion on regarding this, a moderated forum where trolls and noobs get ignored, and lawyers and tech savy individuals get promoted. feel free to read the article and its commentary (which is good moderated commentary by savvy individuals) here: Furthermore, my fellow Canadians have potential recourse via class action settlement should the inevitable catastrophe arise. A case made in 2002 against rogers communications resulted in a defeat for the class suing them, which ultimately got the ball rolling in government to defend consumers, legislating a new consumer protection act which supersedes some of the agreements we make online where those agreements are an overreach on behalf of the company. The rogers ruling details: The aftermath: The above link contains multiple stipulations and remedies regarding consumer protection but in particular the following point is important. "Class proceedings 8. (1) A consumer may commence a proceeding on behalf of members of a class under the Class Proceedings Act, 1992 or may become a member of a class in such a proceeding in respect of a dispute arising out of a consumer agreement despite any term or acknowledgment in the consumer agreement or a related agreement that purports to prevent or has the effect of preventing the consumer from commencing or becoming a member of a class proceeding. 2002, c. 30, Sched. A, s. 8 (1)." If you read that twice, they say: should a company like valve overreach then that overreach will not be respected in a Canadian court... and Canadian's affected may participate in a class action. For my American friends? I deeply regret the state of your democracy... there are several states of your union that are amenable to similar legislation as Canada has enacted on a state by state basis, Obama really should have fought to keep Elizabeth Warren in charge of the consumer protection agency in the USA but they made their call.... they picked a lout instead. The key point, watch your six and read those god forsaken EULA's and TOS's some of them are real, and some of them are a smokescreen. I am considering agreeing to the valve tos's due to the protection afforded by the Canadian consumer rights act of 2002 which would negate their key stipulation as egregious and unjustifiable. Aug 12, 2012 LoL is not fun from a spectators prospective Anyone else think so? I enjoyed watching SC2 tournaments before I even owned a copy of SC2 or knew how to play. Its easy to see this guy has tanks, this guy only has a few bug units, hes going to get crushed. Or this guy has 3 bases and the other guys only on one, hes going to have to do something big to win the game now. With LoL as a spectator I really have no clue what champion is winning or losing without looking at the k/d ratio and the game play is boring in general to watch. 30 minutes of guys grinding NPCs and 5 mins of fighting (commonly 3v1 or some one sided fight). Then one team becomes super overpowered and steamrolls into the other teams base. Its really not entertaining at all. Iv never played LoL and after watching few games being casted I dont think I want to. I get the feeling only people who play LoL are the ones watching it. I could be wrong though and Id like to hear what other people think. :)KingAzaz0 Aug 12, 2012

Aug 11, 2012 Video Card Lately Ive been debating on what video to get for my new system build and have been wondering if I should stick with two 1300x720 displays, or if I should get two 1440p HiRes monitors. The question goes down to....what video card options do I have to run both options (the monitor sizes) to run any game I want at 100% graphic cap while in windowed mode? I rather spend the money now then later. Thanks in advance. OS: A Linux Distro (Main) / Win7 (Gaming) [I want to use Linuix or w/e, the linux distro that looks like OS X]Deso5 Aug 11, 2012
Aug 9, 2012 Can I run SC2 without a GPU? Athlon II x4 3.415 ghz, 2.5ghz CPU-NB 4GB RAM So I have a MSi GTX 460. It's really shoddy, and needs to be RMA'd. But the RMA process takes a month or so I believe? So the problem, is that for a month, I won't have my GPU. My question is, is can I play SC2 smoothly without a GPU? Obviously my graphics will have to be lowered, but my GPU is so unstable that it is usually low anyways (somedays it's stable, some days it isn't, so I can play on Ultra, but to avoid possible artifacting I leave it on medium or low. Basically it's just a bad GPU and I've already talked to MSi about it). I was wondering if I should like, go to best buy and buy a card for a month, and then return it (they have a no questions asked 30 day return policy as long as it isn't broken, I'm sure some other stores out there have a similiar policy), or if I could just play for a month without a GPU.Belial9 Aug 9, 2012

Aug 8, 2012 Can this run Starcraft reasonobly well? Toshiba laptop with quad-core AMD processor with 6000M series integrated graphics. Also has 4 GB of RAM. Aug 8, 2012 Game Design/Programming Hey! I am a recent graduate from high school and I really, really want to be a video game programmer. I would much prefer to work on PC games and in one of the game companies that I love, Blizzard being one of them. However, I live in South Carolina, and there are no schools here that have what I am looking for, and that is of course Game Design and Programming. Does anyone have any suggestions of excellent colleges that can give me the education I want? And if by some miracle a Blizzard employee reads this post, can the employee tell me what specifically Blizzard is looking for when it comes to degrees, the colleges they graduated from, and requirements to be hired? I may be young, but I am determined. I want to be a video game programmer. I'm already working on learning C++. To help create an awesome video game that other people can love and enjoy is a dream to me.Alexhandr4 Aug 8, 2012
Aug 8, 2012 Laptop specs fit requirements but... It's bad Core 2 duo 2.3 ghz processor (dual core of course) 3GB RAM (enough) 128mb video chipset (minimum) In ladder I get 5 to 15 fps depending on map/MU. I've had to play with such horrid performance until just recently when i built my gaming computer. (Surprisingly my $600 has me running ultra settings @ 1080p at over 60fps) My question is why was I lied to?! More than 6 months were laggy and I was stuck in silver 1v1 due to my inability to micro. I'm moving up to plat with relative ease now, but why would that laptop perform so horribly? Other benchmarks with laptop: Oblivion: 15 fps Cod4: 30 fps Minecraft: 30 fps Skyrim: 5 fps Crysis: 10 fps That leads me to believe that my laptop itself is just... Wrong. So I have to buy yet another before I start college next year. Unless Blizz was wrong about their requirements, I simply must tell you: Do not buy Toshiba products. Do not buy a core 2 processor. Do not get anything less than Intel HD graphics.dharkness7 Aug 8, 2012
Aug 8, 2012 TECH HELP - VID CARDS/BIG SCREENS/OLD GAMES So I was hoping to get an as-low-end-as-possible computer that could successfully do a few things: 1. Hook up with an HDMI cable to my 46", 1080 p tv. 2. Connect to the internet wirelessly, to download stuff 3. Watch that stuff that I've downloaded. 4. Old games, like 10+ years D2, original starcraft, nothing fancy. So yeah, the main thing is I want to be able to watch movies, and use the internet on it. It would be nice to be able to install some old games if needed like D2 and play, but my guess is games that are 10+ years old will play on just about any new computer. All of that in an inexpensive laptop would be nice. I'm not gonna set a price range because I don't want people to say, oh that's impossible in that range. I just wanna know the bare minimum amount of tech/expense and make my decision from there. Thanks in advance for any tipsOminyx2 Aug 8, 2012

Aug 7, 2012 I NEED A MOTHERBOARD!!!!1111!!1! Title says all. Here are the specs of the other hardware that I'm looking at. This is my first build so any other tips would be appreciated. Aug 7, 2012 Computer Monitors I had a previous thread on my rig but considering the title is a little outdated, I created a new one. So what is a decent computer monitor that is about 1920x1080? Preferably under 150. If there isn't any for that price, what about 1620x1080?Vader0 Aug 7, 2012
Aug 7, 2012 Games that suck you into the story Yo everyone! Hope you're all feeling good! Now then, here at my university during summer semesters, there's not really much to do. What I'm hoping for you guys to help me with is to find a game series that has REALLY good story-lines that really make you want to play it until it's done. I've had my eye on the Final Fantasy series, but I'd be a little nervous seeing as how there are 13 whole games haha. Thank you all in advance!Aztorak10 Aug 7, 2012
Aug 7, 2012 First Time Builder, Check My Build Please I want this build to play SC2 with almost all ultra settings in high resolution. I do not need ALL ultra with highest res, but I would like something close to that with good stable fps. I also play D3, but SC2 is more important to me. I plan to purchase a 20" LCD, maybe 1080p if I can find one for a good price. I am currently using a laptop (Asus g50v). Please check and let me know what you think. Are the parts compatible? Will things fit well? Am I missing anything? (Besides monitor, keyboard, speakers, and mouse.) Also, any suggestions which could save me some money would be great! I would love to get the price near $600 if possible. Thank you! GLHF! Aug 7, 2012 Any real medieval rts's coming out soon? Yeah seriously what happened to the constant flux of great medieval rts games that used to come out like medieval total war or age of empires? I've always considered castle building rts's to be the most fun kind of strategy game to play. Now, these great games have been reduced to a cartoonish version of free online play which is sad imo. So yes I've played medieval total war, age of empires, the stronghold series and even chess!! I could go on but frankly now none of these games I have listed are as fun to play as as starcraft. So has anyone heard of any great medieval rts games coming out this year or the next?SwineManDan2 Aug 7, 2012

Aug 5, 2012 How's my computer build?! Background and needs: I don't regularly build computers (though I've done it before) or upgrade components frequently, so I may be overlooking some obvious things or making some silly choices. I'm not looking for something that has more processing power than the entire country of Uzbekistan, but I do want something that is fast now, and will be reasonably fast for at least 2 years. I don't need to play the latest and greatest games at max settings. My last build, I went full throttle and got one of the best cards available. Then I found out, most of the games that come out that require a great graphics card, I don't play regularly or even particularly enjoy. I want to be able to play most current games on max right now and at least medium graphics for a couple years. I will be salvaging a HD and sound card from a previous build. Aug 4, 2012 Memorable moments in Halo Anyone here plays Halo? It's fun. (You Don't Say?). Care to share any memorable (or WTF) moments in any Halo game? Here's mine: I was playing Halo: Combat Evolved and it was very laggy!!! A Warthog tried to splatter me so I jumped. Usually you will still die, but lag caused to propel high in the air to avoid it and buy me time to change to my rocket launcher and 'destroy' it. Aug 3, 2012 Looking for some advice on my 1st build Hello and thank you for any helpful feedback. *First thing is I'm on a tight budget of $1100 / Future proof investment. I plan on ordering within 2 months due to windows 8 releasing / back to school specials Unless those are not valid reasons to wait. Mainly be using for gaming such as SC2 / MMORPG's etc etc ... but for SC2 will need to handle about 700 active units on screen. I play a lot of custom games. *I've read a lot about AMD cpu's are not good for SC2 and I'm curious as to why? I've read both sides and the only major factor I see is a couple more fps and price. *This is my first real from the ground up build and I have done tremendous researching on how to DIY. I'm very confident I'll have no problems besides DOA parts arriving.( So many horror stories ) *Please note I won't be buying PSU, 2nd Video Card,cd/dvd player as I already have them. *Nvidea cards becuase I prefer them due to very easy O.C'ing and driver down loads plus PNY XLR8 carries a Lifetime Warranty and piece of mind O.C'ing. *I chose the RAM for the lower Cas Latency and reviews are very good and can be o.c but will I need 4 sticks 16GB, or will 2 sticks 8GB be just fine? I was also thinking just for O.C'ing piece of mind and lower price tag this; *Pending on CPU's I do like what the Motherboard has to offer but I would like to find one with next gen PCI-Express 3.0 SLI 2 way. *Question, What would be the benefit running 3 way SLI ? I don't see very many games that support it, last I read SC2 recently started to support 2 way SLI. I know if I decded on 3 way I'll need a bigger PSU, I am savvy with the system req. wattage calculators . *Networking optional or within current budget. Seems like a great find. I like staying wired as my current router is only 10/100 same with on board LAN. My ISP bandwidth is much much higher and I feel with a new board that can suck up more I'll need a matching router plus I use for other devices needing connection. Thank you all again for thoughts / feedback / help.Esham13 Aug 3, 2012

(okay I want to know, is it okay to have a computer at the minimum wattage or at least 50 wattage above minimum. If it is okay to have it at minimum then I would choose the 750.) Well this is pretty much it. If you think I could add more to improve the quality, but also remain in my budget then please check out the website and create a build you believe is better. I appreciate all answers and any kind of information will be useful!Evisceration97 Jul 21, 2012
Jul 21, 2012 Help / Feedback wanted :D. buying a new pc. Hiya All, so I want to get a new computer but I have very little experience in that field. Basically my budget is prolly somewhere in the 1k-1.5k range, i would need a monitor and keyboard as well but im not too worried about that. this is what i have in my head so far Graphics: pretty set on a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670. Seems like the best high performance bang for your buckc ard out there. obviously a little pricey but i want this computer to run everything smoothly for a good while and be able to fraps etc... Processor: Oh god please help me here. I've heard so many different opinions on this. Since this is a gaming computer are i5s better than i7s? does the processor really make that big of a difference. A lot of the computers I am looking at have something like a intel i7 - 3820 processor. Is that good or bad, well it hold back my graphics card? I really need suggestions here. Ram: most likely gonna get like 8gigs. I'm assuming thats plenty for a long time to come, correct? Every other part including where to buy it I still have no idea. I'm even willing to build it myself if it's doable for someone with limited knowledge but the ability to follow instructions. Help me plox :D. oh, and to make this starcraft related zerg up, protoss balanced, terran op. jk, but no one is ever on the hardware forum : /.Wolflink41 Jul 21, 2012
Jul 20, 2012 Need a New & Cheap Graphics Card Hey guys! I'm currently playing sc2 on a Dell Inspiron 545 and using the default graphics card which is far from decent. I have an average fps of 20 on the minimum graphics settings and that plummets to even lower when conflicts occur, making micro very hard. I want to get a graphics card for under 100$ that will at least allow me to play on low graphics detail on 4v4 matches without lag. If any computer specs are needed do not hesitate to ask, and last of all, THANK YOU :D!Swiss7 Jul 20, 2012

Jul 15, 2012 the ultimate rig cost isn't an issue, but i don't want to buy anything that isn't necessary for sc2. for example if a quad core will be enough to keep the fps at 60 during large engagements, then there's no need for a 6 core. this pc will be used strictly for sc2. basically, just tell me your dream sc2 rig. include what mouse/keyboard you would use. it should run sc2 on the highest possible settings and maintain at least 60 fps, even during large engagements.BornAgainDan39 Jul 15, 2012
