Mar 4, 2012 Board Games I've recently picked up board gaming again. I'm not talking Monopoly or Sorry, and I'm also not talking about 4+ hour, epic long, hobby shop games either. I've specifically been getting into what they call Euro or German style board games. They are easy to pickup, but they involve a decent amount of strategy, and varying degrees of social interaction. I've been having a blast, and not only have I been able to connect with my gaming friends while doing something in person instead of something on vent, I'm also getting a fun gaming experience with my family. If you have the luxury of living close to guild mates, or you have family close by, or even non gaming friends, this a great activity that can satiate your desire to quest, raid, play, explore, or roleplay depending on what type of game you pick up. I've even started implementing drinking rules to some games, making them a lot more fun with an adult crowd. I'm going to list some games I've been playing, and some games I want to get and give you an idea of why they are fun and who might like them. You can take a look at these on Amazon for more information. Ticket to Ride - Everyone I have shown this game has liked to some degree or another. It's considered a family game, but I find it very appealing among a wide variety of people. If you were going to own one game, this is by far the one I would recommend. The only downside is that it comes with tiny cards, which are a big part of the game, so I would highly recommend purchasing the 1910 expansion because it comes with normal size cards, as well as a ton more "tickets" giving you more options on how to play the game. The game itself can be played with 2 to 5 players, but it is best with 4 or 5. The expansion makes the game betterall around, but it also makes 2 and 3 player games a lot better. Ticket to Ride has a few different versions, so you can pick up a European version that has normal cards already in the box, and some of the other expansions are designed for 2 or 3 players or even a team varient for up to 6. Pandemic is a cooperative game for 2 to 4 players (5 with the expansion) that can even be played solo with a few modifications. You and your group form a team of disease control specialists that are trying to cure 4 different disease strains that have started to spread throughout the world. This game also has a wide appeal, but it is a bit more mechanically involved, despite still being fairly easy to play. This is a great game for your fellow guild mates or gamer friends because it has a ton of player interaction, and you are all working together to beat the board, and it isn't easy. In fact, you probably lose the game just as much as you win, but that is part of the fun. This game plays really well with 2, 3, and 4 players. Dominion is a drafting style card game in a similar vein as magic the gathering EXCEPT, it isn't collectable! If you have ever had the itch to pick magic back up, but can't bring yourself to start wasting a ton of money on booster packs, this is the game you have been waiting for. Everything you need comes right in the box, and supports 2, 3, and 4 players at a time. While I haven't played this one, this will be one of my next purchases. I used to love magic, but I hate how involved it is, because I could never get other people to play it, and it just got way to expensive for me. This game has multiple expansions as well, so if you get bored with the base game, you can always spice it up with new cards, without endlessly buying them just to stay competetive. The nice thing about this game design is that everybody is building their decks during the game from the same pool of cards, so it is purely strategic instead of reliant on what you own or start out with. Cosmic Encounter is another game I haven't played yet, but I was so enamored with the game design, it shot to the top of my wish list. It's 3-5 players, but is best with 5, and you can also get expansions all the way up to 8 players which is rare for a board game. This game isn't a traditional board game in the sense that it just uses various pieces and role cards to facilitate the game. This game is 100% dynamic player interaction. What piques my interest with this game is that the only way you are going to win, is by creating and breaking alliances, bluffing, trickery, and backstabbing. It's hard to explain, but I like it because you can't just use the same strategy over and over. Every game plays out completely differently. The Resistance is a party game for 5-10 people that plays in less than a half hour, and is extremely good with any amount of players in that range. It is a deduction game to figure out who are the traitors amongst your group. I also haven't played this one, but it is very highly rated, short, and can play up to 10 people which is a huge plus. It also only costs $16, so you can't really go wrong here. The sci-fi theme doesn't seem to be a big part of the actual game, but the game itself seems like it would be a lot of fun and a lot of laughs with a larger group of people. If you have get togethers with even more people, you could pick up Werewolf which isn't quite as good from what I've read, but can support over twice as many players which is pretty cool. There are a lot of other great games out there, but I feel like those cover a wide range of player amounts, and game styles, and are excellent starting points for getting into this kind of thing. Other great games include Settler's of Catan, Carcassonne, 7 Wonders, etc.. And if you find yourself with a group of people that love to do this on a regular basis, there are a ton of games that offer more challenge, longer play times, and more immersion than the ones I've listed. There are actually a lot of games that offer a dungeon crawl type of experience. I also recommend doing some research on as that is where I have been getting most of my information. Just realize it is slanted towards people who are enthusiasts, and not towards a more casual crowd. It's important to pick games that you think your friends and/or family will like, and not just games you would be into, because its easy to overwhelm someone with game mechanics and rules. Start with simple "Gateway" games before diving into the deep end. I think I've had more fun playing board games with my friends than I have with video games in a long time. I still love laddering by myself, but board games are where it's at when I want to socialize.HiLO0 Mar 4, 2012
Mar 3, 2012 Keyboard Discussion I need a new board. Money isn't a problem as long as it's worth every cent. I would like something that's a little slimmer, and has changing led's. That would be sick. Or just something that looks cool and glows anyways. :DGreasy7 Mar 3, 2012

Mar 3, 2012 Xbox 360 Problem So I purchased my xbox 360 as soon as it came out, and it has been awesome! But now, after six and a half years of dedicated service, it has red ringed on me =( So now I'm in need of a new xbox. My question is whether I should buy a core system for $100 and use my old hard drive to hold me over until the new one launches in a few years, or buy the 250gb Xbox 360 slim and hope the new xbox takes forever to launch so I get my money's worth. What do you guys think?Khani9 Mar 3, 2012

Feb 28, 2012 Escort and Timed Missions It really bugs me when games put in timed or escort missions. They are both just not fun to me. Can I ask why these missions are added to a game. Is there a good purpous? Do people really enjoy them? Edit: The only missions I enjoyed were those in Starcraft 2 since easy mode was real easy so I didn't feel time pressed or put to work.Rescue0 Feb 28, 2012

Feb 28, 2012 UMA graphics Hey I was looking to get a new laptop as mine has been broken for nearly a year now. I understand that UMA graphics is worse for gaming compared to a dedicated graphics card but if the system has 8GB of RAM will this be plenty to run Starcraft smoothly?SVC2 Feb 28, 2012
Feb 27, 2012 Advice for a future gamer of America Hey everyone, Today is my birthday and I have come into a little money thanks to some of my family members, and I am looking to splurge a little bit (lol 'splurge') on a gift for myself. I want to build myself a new computer, and I'm having difficulty find parts that will match my budget, yet still won't break the bank. I have this motherboard in mind: But what I am having trouble with is finding a case, graphics card, and processor. I would really appreciate any advice that you guys are willing to give me in my struggle. PS: I am looking to spend around a total of $1,000 bucks AT MOST, so if you could be kind enough to keep advised parts at a reasonable price, you will have my thanks (for all the good thats worth).Jared14 Feb 27, 2012
Feb 27, 2012 League of Legends is Trash. Just thought i'd let you know. There are 3 maps, and it took them like 3 years to publish the third—the champions and skins are all ridiculously overpriced (seriously how much work does it take Riot to put 4 new abilities in the game, many of which are copies of others, and make a new model? Certainly not the thousands they make from every new hero) and the gameplay/combat is entirely lackluster and heavily derpworthy. I can't believe they actually have DoTA tournaments with decent prize money. A 12 year old kid could be competitive in such a setting—MOBA games in general have a very low skill ceiling. Imo, the genre needs to either advance somehow or be thrown away. At the moment "LoL style" DoTA clones do nothing for esports. Why must companies sponsor games like DoTA?Xenharmonic17 Feb 27, 2012

Feb 25, 2012 Kotor 1 vs. Kotor 2 Which game do you guys think is better? Personally I think Kotor 2 is. It refined the original's combat system and interface, included a bunch of cool ideas, but many parts that would have made it the clear winner had to be removed due to Lucas Arts rushing the game and giving it a deadline. And come on, you could make everyone else evil. What do you guys think? iMoDoomerX6 Feb 25, 2012

Feb 24, 2012 BattleDex: a turn-based strategy with cards Hey everyone! I play starcraft 2 as well as a game called BattleDex, however BattleDex has been struggling to have a solid community because no one knows about it! So if you're into Turn-based Strategies, or just looking for something new, look no further! I think the best way to describe it would be "Advanced Wars (except Hexagonal grid instead of squares) meets Magic the Gathering" There are 8 units: two types of tanks, a fast reconaissance truck, a long range artillery, an anti-air halftrack, a fighter jet, a helicopter, and an infantry. Infantry capture resources and Control Points. Control Points give Victory Points which can be used to win a match (or just destroy the enemy headquarters). Unlike Starcraft, BattleDex matches typically only have about 15 units on the board at one time (average, of course. I've seen way more and way less). This makes things more manageable but it means that every unit counts. There are almost 200 cards (and more added every month). Some give you normal units cheaper, some give buffed units, some buff/debuff units, some have special effects (like grenades and land mines), etc. A deck is limited to 12 cards, so choose wisely! BattleDex is a Free to Play game with an optional paid Premium account option, so feel free to download it and try it out! You can play as much as you want and it's 100% free! here is the old trailer (the UI is now vastly improved but the mechanics and unit models are all the same) here is the website if you want to check it out! Lastly, I'm the Community Manager and Forum Moderator, Bubbles, so if you have any questions or requests or want someone to show you the ropes, feel free to PM me ingame in BattleDex or StarCraft 2, on either games' sites, or post right here!Animus0 Feb 24, 2012

Feb 23, 2012 Post your Computer rig! Hey guys, I seen a lot of computer talk here, but no actual thread of what computers we actually use. So post what you play on, custom built or not, here! I will admit I'm just entering the custom built world myself, ordering the parts for my first home-built PC yesterday ^_^. Can't wait to get my hands on it and build it. I've been playing on a Dell XPS laptop, but its seen its day, and can't even run sc2 on low without overheating within 20 minutes. Here's the parts for it: Corsair Graphite Series 600T case Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) ASRock P67 EXTREME4 motherboard CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX750 (CMPSU-750AX) 750W modular power supply EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB (Fermi) 1GB video card Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB RAM Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive Koutech IO-RCM621 All-in-one card reader ASUS 24X DVD Burner Linksys WMP600N PCI Wireless Adapter with Dual-Band Going to cost me around $870 after the 4th of july sales and mail-in rebates. I'm prepared to be completely blown away by maxxed out settings once this thing's done. All brought to me by good 'ol :D I'll be going to best buy soon to pick out a monitor I want. Looking for a 23" or 24" LCD/LED with 2ms response time. I'll eventually go dual screen, but that's for another time.Mav105 Feb 23, 2012

Feb 23, 2012 Cooling Fans Hey everyone, this is probably a really stupid question, but are cooling fans suppose to be faced in the direction to blow toward or away from the mobo, cpu, gpu etc.? Over the summer I built my first desktop and I had a friend help me, and he's the one who put the fans in. It seems like the rear fan draws heat out of the case, and the front draws cool air in. Idk if he made a mistake or what, but I just got a new 140mm fan which I have to put on the side of the case and because of this I'm confused which direction to put it. Right now I have it blowing out of the case, is that right? ThanksFishMonger2 Feb 23, 2012

Feb 20, 2012 Dear Esther This guy reviews it really well. I picked up this game for $10 on steam, it is brand new. If you have ever enjoyed a MYST game or anything similar, I recommend this for the immersion factor alone (since it literally has no puzzles). I'm on my 3rd play through trying to explore parts that I missed and piece together the story. If you have not played it and don't want to, I am still curious to see what you think after watching the review.Desukan0 Feb 20, 2012

Feb 19, 2012 Limited budget and needed a gaming computer. OK so i don't have anything good at all right now i am running everything at the lowest settings and it just pretty much sucks a lot and lags a little bit still sometimes. I only have a budget of $700 and my highest would be $800 I've looked at a couple of dell and I'm not quite sure where else to look but so far i really like what i have seen with the Alienware X51 i like the few perks it has and it is small... that is also nice because i don't have a lot of space right now. So any suggestions would be nice right now.Silver13 Feb 19, 2012

Yes, its on Origin, but I didn't have any problems with Origin (I don't know why people seem to hate it so much.) No I'm not a Bioware fan boy, I just really, really enjoyed the demo. Feb 19, 2012 Teach me Technology I'm going to be applying at this Tech Store pretty soon, which doesn't have any education requirements, I'd still like to be a Technology gosu. Now, I don't mean just computer tech, I'm pretty savvy when it comes to Hardware, but I'm also interested in learning things such as what types of wires are used for what, differences in quality of cameras, and really anything you know about technology in general. Also, I only know about computer games and XBox games, so knowledge about the Nintendo and Sony systems would be amazing. (Nothing against those companies, just so happen to go with XBox) Thanks for making my knowledged :DGreasy12 Feb 19, 2012
Feb 17, 2012 Rig to play on max settings with 60+ fps Hey guys, I recently made a rig I thought would play starcraft 2 on max settings with 40 - 60 fps at all times. I have: 3GHz quad core i5 Asus EAH6850 4 gig ram And my resolution is only 1440 x 900 While initially the FPS is great, in huge battles (particularly 2v2) I get down to 10 - 20 FPS. Is it my computer, or some setting I have? What kind of upgrades will I need to make in future to get what I want? Thanks very much.FoxTrap19 Feb 17, 2012

Feb 17, 2012 New Laptop So I just a few months ago finished my first desktop and am very happy with it, and really enjoyed picking out the hardware and putting it together, I'm so glad I did it yay! Anyway, I'm a college student and so for the next few months I'm going to try to save enough to buy a new laptop for school, since the one I'm using now is a good 4 years old and needs to be replaced. Since I'm playing most of my games on my desktop I don't really need anything very powerful for my laptop. The only games I'd like it to run would be SC2 (doesn't have to be ultra graphics) and possibly D3. But like I said I'll mostly just be using it for writing papers and web browsing. Since I'm not going to be buying it for about 5 months there's going to be different laptops on the market then there is right now, but what's a good brand? I heard Lenovo makes good Laptops. Also I'm someone who always likes having more RAM than I probably need on a computer, so would having 6gb be a waste if I'm pretty much not using this for gaming much? Like I've heard that HP laptops have a lot of problems with overheating does Lenovo have any commonly present problems with it's laptops? I figure something like this in 4-5 months should be very reasonable. Anyone else here have any other suggestions? ThanksFishMonger3 Feb 17, 2012
Feb 16, 2012 I'll just leave this here... If people are looking at a computer to play at extreme settings (even in customs aside from final battles of Desert Strike), but are unsure of parts... here's what i have currently to do this: 2x Seagate Barracuda 320 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 Gb/S (Purchased at $50/ea)* Set up in Raid 0 2x Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 HMz (Purchased at $115/ea)* LITE-ON 4x Blue-ray Reader (Purchased at $60)* MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 Motherboard (Purchased at $164)* Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1 GB (Purchased at $170)* AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE CPU (Purchased at $176)* Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (Purchased at $34, now $35) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Purchased at $110, now $100 ASUS VW246H 24" 2ms response monitor (Purchased at $220, now $200) Cool Master Silent Pro 700W Power supply (Purchased at $110, now $90) Antec 900 Case (Purchased at $100, now $90) The parts with an "*" by their name are no longer stocked by newegg, which is where everything was purchased. For replacements to those, I'd recommend: Motherboard: With an AMD CPU get the bells and whistles since the boards are cheap anyhow nowadays. With intel I'm not qualified to answer. CPU: There's a couple AMD Phenom IIs available under $130, if the intel i5-2500K isn't in your budget. I'd by them OEM since stock fans tend to be under powered anyhow. Blue-Ray player: This is obviously optional. I usually just get the cheapest. To each their own. Hard Drive: I don't know... things in Thailand messed market up. My hard drive has actually gone up in value... RAM: Had a bad experience with the memory I bought, but now it's gone down in price significantly. There's 8 GB (4x 2GB) for about $50. I've heard Corsair and G.Skill are good brands. Video Card: There's a sapphire HD 6770 now available for $100. I'd go with that. I am still happy with the 5770 from them.CSmith7 Feb 16, 2012

Feb 16, 2012 Laptop on a Budget I'm looking at upgrading from a desktop to a laptop. Though I'm hopefully aiming at a budget and was wondering if there is any good laptops at a budget lower than $700, and is capable running Starcraft 2 and other games like it without hiccups? If there's not a laptop under that budget, what desktop would you recommend under that same budget?Oblivion4 Feb 16, 2012
