Hey everyone,

We received feedback that Protoss early game options are currently limited in the Protoss vs. Zerg matchup due to the potential of very early Zergling drop builds. Protoss players were having trouble holding off these early attacks without the help of a Stargate and thus gravitated towards opening with a “safe” Stargate in most games. So as to open up the early game for Protoss players, we’ll looking to change the Overlord’s “Mutate Ventral Sacs” upgrade requirement from Evolution Chamber to Lair.

Zerg
  • Overlord’s “Mutate Ventral Sacs” upgrade requirement changed from Evolution Chamber to Lair.

Next, we’ve been seeing a lot of games where Anti-Armor Missile spam becomes the determining factor in the late game in all three Terran matchups. The Anti-Armor Missile is intended to combo with core units such as Marines, Marauders, Liberators, and Cyclones—not to be massed purely for damage, as is currently the case. Thus, we’d like to reduce the damage of Anti-Armor missiles to reinforce its intended function.

At the same time, since Terrans are currently relying on the Raven for their late-game power, reducing the Anti-Armor Missile’s damage would help rein that strategy in. We think this would provide a good opportunity to give Terrans a bit more late-game help in the form of a buff to the Viking.

Vikings are often perceived as being weaker in the current metagame than they were before, partially due to recent changes to other races. We’re proposing a health buff, from 125 to 135, which will not only change the unit’s relationship against anti-air ground units and late-game air units, but also against area-of-effect spells commonly used against them, such as Parasitic Bomb and Psionic Storm.

Terran
  • Raven’s Anti-Armor missile damage reduced from 30 impact damage with splash fall-off to 5 flat area of effect damage.
  • Viking health increased from 125 to 135.

These changes are currently available in the testing matchmaking queue. After testing, we would like to publish the finalized balance changes to live Versus on Monday 3/19. However, keep in mind that this date is subject to change. As always, thanks for you continued interest and please let us know what you think on the forums or any other community sites.

Anything on Neosteel Frame? It's been 8 years.

Balance team please read this:

Have you wondered why mass raven keeps being the default of terran late game?. It's not because it's "OP", it's because terrans lack proper a late game unit to work towards.

You would think the BC would be that "late game unit to work towards", but it's not. So the closest thing terran has late game is mass raven.

Mass raven's AOE helps deal with the late game deathballs that happen.

So if AAM damage gets nerfed in some way, BC's have to get buffed.

The SC2 BC damage and fire rate needs to be similar to the BW BC. Slow firing but harder hitting.

The SC2 BC is broken because the "low damage, fast firing" design just doesn't make sense for the unit design.

and there goes terran's late-game splash.
Uau.....
I was sure that AAM would be cut to 10.......5 much the better. This is a very good patch, adresses really core issues and in a very long time there are not Protoss nerfs.
These changes are good but why do you continue to ignore battlecruiser's? Also I think a slight nerf to the Thor's splash attack and slight buff to it's heavy cannon's would be a good move. Just my opinion.

Terran
Raven’s Anti-Armor missile damage reduced from 30 impact damage with splash fall-off to 5 flat area of effect damage.
Viking health increased from 125 to 135.

This will do absolutely nothing good and is a massive nerf to the weakest race in the game. Can you please test unit interactions before proposing balance changes? Basic game design stuff.

Anti-armor missile can't be combo'd with other units because terran has no way to force engages. This means that it's primarily used for the burst damage while the armor effect is just gravy.

What does a viking hp buff do? I'm honestly at a complete loss at what this is supposed to accomplish. The anti-armor missile was used for both anti-air and anti-ground engages. 10 hp barely helps in the anti-air fight and does literally nothing in ground engages. I don't know what to say, I'm flabbergasted.

facepalm.......Terran finally finds something that works barely late game and it gets the nerf hammer with no compensation buff.....and the nerf is really freaking severe too.

yep i'm done with this game.

Interesting changes but you left out the part where you address protoss's lategame imbalance vs zerg and terran.

It was a bug (Insta-Nuke with 20 supply), and as with bugs was squashed......

Very good update.

Overlord change is good and is well needed.

For the AAM damage nerf, you should allow it also reduce shield armor if the damage is going to be very low like this. It would reinforce it's supportive usage.

Also the SC2 BC having a terrible damage design(It should be like the BW BC) is why terrans go mass raven in the first place as explained here:

Balance team please read this:

Interesting changes but you left out the part where you address protoss's lategame imbalance vs zerg and terran.

What imbalance? PvT is zerg favoured, you suggest to make Tempeest 4 supply? We will consider your wish.

and terran will be even worse. thanks guys

Now terran has no lategame again, and the devs continue to ignore how terran is forced to two base all in with scv's to even win against protoss.

Are you guys that protoss and zerg biased that you can only nerf terran???
Finally.
The professional casters were even making fun of how gimmicky the AAM was going so far as to say it turns your units orange and thats about it.

this looks so much like a joke or...?

Raven’s Anti-Armor missile damage reduced from 30 impact damage with splash fall-off to 5 flat area of effect damage.
I presume this means you're also going to fix the bug where anti-armor missile fails to affect shields?
First time in a long sucession of patches that protoss is not nerfed! This in terran brigade is considered terran nerf.
Terrans had only one buff in this patch (Viking health), as about the Raven-bug it was just a bug. As with all mistakes, once detected was fixed.
Terrans shold have asked the first to squash this bug for the sake of their honesty!

Very good update.
