Macro control (keybinds, practice, etc.)

General Discussion
Hey everyone!

If anybody is able to throw in some tips, that would be awesome!

Basically what I'm noticing in my play is that in terms of micro-ing in combat I'm totally fine (I can land fungal growths, move around banelings, etc. as needed because my left hand is always in one spot on the keyboard), but when it comes to controlling the more macro-oriented aspects in the game I have difficulty keeping up with what I want to be doing (having to move my hand around from shift to H to 9 or 0 then A then 7 then shift, etc. is so much jumping).

For example as Zerg (what I play) at a pretty "basic" level you have:
- 3 Hatcheries (5, 6, 7 for me and 0 is all of them)
- 3 Queens for injects (no keys, I just double tap the hatch and target the queen)
- 1 Queen for creep spreading (4 for me)
- Upgrades to get at appropriate timings (important buildings I have on 8-9)
- Structures to build at appropriate timings (drones I plan to build with are on 3 usually)
- Pressing all kinds of letters like ASDRHEQVetc. between all those parts
- Not to mention I sometimes like using my F-keys for camera locations

I generally KNOW when I need to be doing each of those things and theoretically speaking I can keep track of them, but I have a really hard time actually DOING what I want to be doing and I always end up stockpiling literally 4k+ minerals and 3k+ gas by the end of 25 minute games.

So my question is: Does anybody have any good suggestions on keybindings I could try or ways I could practice getting better at actually doing what I want to be doing? I feel like the default keybinds are hindering me because although they try to mostly be on one side of the keyboard, hitting anything 6 or higher is just brutally hard for me to do with any speed and accuracy (draw a line from 6 through B on your keyboard, to the right of there is really hard for me and that causes a LOT of moving my entire hand very frequently).

Also a related question, do most people use the default keybinds or something else, and how do you position your hand to need as little movement as possible? I tried grid and it doesn't work for me either because I still have to use 1 through 0 for control groups and the f-keys for camera control (sometimes I like saving camera locations, I could just be weird though cause I never see anybody talk about that).

Ideally I think I'd love keybinds that I would never have to move my left hand at all (kinda like how when you're typing you have ASDF and JKL; as "reference keys" so your hands never move, it's just your fingers). I know I should be coordinated enough to keep up because I can type around 75ish WPM, so I think the key layout is what's stopping me from being able to. :P

Sorry for the medium-sized wall of text, but when I start to explain something I have a hard time stopping <.<

Thanks a lot to anybody that's willing to help out! Cookies and <3s

Not really it's up to your preference, just practice.

default keybinds
practice is what you need, pick a general layout that fits your hands, for example, i have freakin' huge hands so key sequences that are close together are difficult but instead have to be more spread out. if you have smaller hands you would have to keep all of the keys clustered together because you wouldn't be able to reach very far.

Once you have a general layout, just play a lot, get used to it, and everything will become more natural, just as long as you don't change it.

I will take my cookies in peanut butter, and i would like them inside the week.
Thanks for the help :)

I'm a little worried to mess around with keybindings by myself just because I may accidentally forget about something after over writing it or whatnot. More or less I'd love to be able to remap 7, 8, 9, 0 and other buttons like H and P (hold, patrol, etc.) to something closer to the left half of the keyboard, but I don't want to risk removing any existing key binds.

I'll just keep practicing and trying to figure out what works for me then!

These will take you a long time to get used to. Rome was not built in a day nor was anything mastered in a day.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, I've swapped to it and I'm working on getting it down. I can already tell you it's much better than the default because you never have to move your hand :D
