Updated original post.

Also anyone posting about the condition spreading to other games, please try to uninstall your gpu via device manager, restart the computer then go back into your device manager and scan for new hardware. Windows should do the rest. This should fix the issue with any other game that you are now experiencing the symptoms with.

If you don't feel comfortable with this try installing a older driver, 306.23 should fix the issue as well. As far as i know this is a fix for Nvidia, and if you are having the same issue with AMD you can try these steps as they may or may not work.

I will try this since the issue spread to League of Legends as well. Ill report back what happens.
Zarem, what you've posted is false.
That may help in some cases, but for most cases, it will not.

I have been suffering this issue specifically with Blizzard games. WoW, Diablo 3 and now SC2:HOTS.

Playing along, enjoying myself immensely and then BAM complete PC lock up with a horrible sound coming from the speaker(last 50ms of sound looped). PC will reset itself after a few moments or just reset it myself.

PC states it's because of overclocking. I disabled all of my stable OC's just to humor the reports. No change, random lock ups, temps well within norms and PC/GPU activity actually fairly low in comparison to playing, say, The Witcher 2. That, or you know, stability testing.

This isn't a PC issue once it starts to develop. It's a program issue and Blizzard needs to get on top of it.

Im afraid it did not work for me
How do I see my BIOS version? So I can correctly update my original post
Capping my FPS did work for me - I was able to play for about 2 hours last night with no crashes where I was crashing about every 15 minutes before. I'm going to incrementally increase my FPS cap until it starts crashing again.

Here are my specs:
EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Signature 2 FTW - Factory Overclocked 10% (Bios 80.06.28.00.60)
ASUS Maximus Gene V
Intel 3570k - Overclocked to 4.5 GHz
G.Skill Ares 2x8GB 1600 9-9-9-25 lowered to 8-9-8-24

Edited my original post to include Variables.txt and graphics card information.

I thought the game was working for me, but it most certainly is not; I was able to complete the campaign, but now when I go back to do previous missions, it crashes. Heck, it's giving me a Blue Screen in the Lab Rats mission on Casual difficulty!

What bothers me the most about this issue is that it is also happening when I attempt to go back and play Wings of Liberty missions. Both my computers have successfully completed Wings of Liberty multiple times, on multiple difficulties. This Blue Screen issue only began around the time Heart of the Swarm was released, a few days prior with Wings of Liberty. The only change I can account for is the software update prior to the expansion's release, which made a previously-playable game unplayable.

*Edit / Update* I popped that bit of code regarding framerate into my Variables.txt file and managed to play for almost an hour before the same Blue Screen interrupted my rampage through the lab. Still not playable.
Viper, Thanks! that helped a lot actually, however now I get this random screen freeze when I finish a mission, when I die or when I get to a checkpoint. Really annoying, I'm not sure if it's related or if it's a different problem :(
[EDIT: 4/3 Back to crashing even after this post] So far I can play if I disable SLI, lower graphics, and set the frame rate limits to 30. I'm 3 games in Vs AI with no crashing...yet.

Here is my DXdiag:

I upped the cap to 35 and crashed after an hour and then again after another 15 minutes. Lowered it back to 30, and it didn't crash for 1.5 hours. I didn't note in my first post that after capping it at 30, I increased all graphics settings to Ultra or Extreme with no issues.

Thanks,
<----Azra----<<
Lowering the frame rate to 30fps seems to have solved the problem for me on campaign so far over the past few hours. No crashes since I lowered the frame rate.I haven't tried online battles yet.

I was getting the Directx error and game crash before I lowered the frame rate. I haven't done anything else but lower the frame rate. Game graphics are running on Ultra.

I cant say for the lower cards but it seems with the higher end Nvidia cards that lowering frame rate fixes the problem...at least so far.

For those using Nvidia cards you might want to try downloading Geforce Experience from the Nvidia site. Its a pretty new app. It detects all your games and will automatically optimize the graphics for your gpu.

See this is crazy I'm running the same drivers and the same model graphics card and the artifacting and restart still happens 15 minutes into campaign even lowering framerate and setting it to 30. There may be two very different issues here. The artifacting issue is way worse because it replicates symptoms you would see on an overheating/broken video card symptoms completely reboots my machine in windwos 8. The direct x errors may be a diffrent issue entirely billzard!
**Note** If your system is restarting without an error, try disabling the 'Automatically restart' feature. From Control Panel, click on system ►Advanced system settings ► Advanced tab ►System and Recovery Settings > Uncheck 'Automatically Restart'.

I tried that and the problem persist: the system restarted again

@Archilaus

Yes the DirectX error just has a pop up error about a possible out of date driver and closes the game. Different issue completely.

I edited my other post to include I'm running Windows 7 64 Ultimate. Also my cpu is running on water and I have 7 case fans in my Antec 1200 tower.Being I'm running on water now my tower runs a heck of a lot cooler. It used to heat up the room on air but on water the room is always cool. Its possible that others are having a gpu overheating problem caused by the game or driver that I don't get because of me not running on air along with a top of the line air tower. I always recommend Antec cases for high end pcs on air with all the stock case fans that come in them.

If your system is rebooting you should at least post your hardware specs so you can help them narrow down the cause. My 580GTX Soc has 3 fans on it so it runs pretty cool. If you don't post your specs you aren't helping to narrow down the rebooting problem. You should also monitor your gpu temps to see if it is overheating. Also if you are rebooting every 15 minutes I wouldn't advise even playing the game at all until you have at least ruled out overheating.
Getting crashes pretty regularly, this pops up, screen freezes until this pops up and I'm forced to quit.

Tried everything in the OP to no avail.
Also tried deleted/recreating my variables file.

Using windows 8 64bit.

Am using all the latest drivers/updates for my computer, just updated them all yesterday and reset my bios back to factory default to try to fix this issue. No dice. Here's my dxdiag.

@Roraks:

You said in the other thread that people do not report system restarts. As I explained here I get a blue screen (which is a system freeze/restart):
http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/8196603881?page=3#52

And as I said I even run FurMark for nearly 1 hour without any problems. And FurMark stresses the GPU much more than any game can. Let's say it this way. With FurMark gpu heats to 80C but with SC2 it stays around 60C.

This problem happens rarely in multiplayer but happens a lot in Campaign. I finished the game campaign in brutal. But for me the main difficulty was not coming from the game but from the constant blue screens. I always felt the game was testing my patience :)
@Archilaus and @Casual. I'm not sure about Archilaus since he never posted his specs but you did Casual and you pretty much have the same setup as I do ....i7 and 580 GTX. I keep my cpu running at stock. I don't see the point in ocing it at this time. Nothing I run requires it.

I am noticing that both you and Archilaus are running Windows 8(I'm running 7) and the frame rate cap isn't working for either of you. I'm assuming you are on air but it does make me wonder if HOTS has issues with Windows 8 since all I had to do is cap the frame rate and haven't had one crash since.

There is freeware app called Real Temp 3.0 you can use to monitor your cpu and gpu temps. My GPU is running 38 degrees Celsius max temp during gaming. If you guys that have 580GTX gpu`s and i7 cpu`s(actually everyone with different specs too) wouldn't mind downloading Real Temp 3.0 please post what your max gpu temps are during gaming or after the game crashes.

I'm just thinking since I'm no longer having problems yet you guys with similar hardware specs to mine still are that it`s probably either overheating gpu`s and/or Windows 8 conflicting with the game and/or driver.

The more we can narrow down the causes the quicker this can be resolved.I think this would actually narrow down the issues for everyone but who knows. There could be multiple issues depending on the specs....but its a start.

Be nice if some other people with Windows 7 with i7`s and 580`s could post if they have solved the issue by lowering the frame rate.
deleting the variables.txt worked for me ... at least working for now. thank you.

I thought it was an overheating issue. I dont go above 43C on my 580gtx as I have an aggressive liquid cooling solution even though I don't overclock my machine. I have an i7 and the cpu doesn't go above 53C. I tried this just for pure sadiomachistic insanity and the same thing happens on a core dou with the 580gtx. Its blizzard... I would normally blame nvidia but Im playing bioshock infinite just fine.

It's not an overheating issue. Also I run bioshock infinite at the hisghest settings and have been playing for up to 9 hours straight. This is a coding issue on blizzards part. Worse there are probably 3 to 4 diffrent root issues that cause this. For example did you ever see any artifacting? around 50 percent of people in this thread just get a direct x error. My issue is I get actual artifacting as if my card is blowing up and my entire machine restarts in windows 8.

I still have the core dou specs.

I have found a solution for the black screen/driver crash for the other games however starcraft still crashes but i think i need to make this post to explain my findings in hopes that it helps the blizzard team find out what the problem is.

First i have never had this problem before and it started when i bought HOTS. The problem manifested itself pretty fast, as i was playing my first game and 2 minutes into the game it crashed.
After looking for a solution for days nothing seemed to work but the worst part was that a couple of days later the issue seemed to have spread to League of Legends and Diablo 3 and i could no longer play them since they crashed as well.

This made me think that maybe something was wrong with my video card/computer but i still found it weird that the problem just magically started when i installed and ran HOTS so i continued to investigate and i found a site that has a lot of tips in how to fix this issue. After trying some fixes i was finally able to fix the problem ONLY for League of Legends and Diablo 3. The fix i used was the expand.exe nvlddmkm.sy_ into nvlddmkm.sys and replace the file on the driver folder in system 32. After doing this i no longer have crashes or any kind of issue with LoL, Diablo 3 or any other game (i also have XCOM, Torchlight 2, Path of Exile right now).

So then i proceeded to test this games for a couple of days, and after many hours of play i concluded that the issue was gone, so i thought about testing HOTS as well. Not a minute after the game started it crashed just like before. Frustrated i tried again tweaking variables to see if they helped to no result. I finally gave up and went on to play LoL only to find that the problem was back on LoL too.

Finally i applied the fix a second time, and the issue was resolved in all games. I have not even opened HOTS again since the second fix because i dont believe it will work and im afraid crashing so many times might damage the card or the computer.

My conclusion of this is that somehow HOTS is messing with this driver nvlddmkm.sys which seems rather obvious since we get the message that it has crashed, but, the thing here is that HOTS seems to be "corrupting" the file (i dont know if corrupting is the right word but i dont know how else to explain it) and after crashing once it continues to crash even in other games and after fixing the driver file the other games no longer crash, which proves that neither my video card or my computer has any kind of issue and its HOTS that is messed up.

I understand that not everyone might be experiencing issues with other games and this is not really a fix for the HOTS problem but i hope this is of use for the blizzard technicians in order to find out what the problem is and fix it.

I forgot to mention that i have played Wings of Liberty since day one without any problem and the issue started with HOTS.
I'm using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280, and the game sitll crashes after 30 fps cap.
