They can't make you turn over an upgrade. If somebody needs it for their offspec, do you really think they aren't going to leave group?

The problem is that the change makes people feel bad, because it looks bad. And no matter how times you tell them "that just means you're bad at arithmetic", you have never addressed their feelings. It's bad design to create a system that feels bad until sometime after you have had numerous mathematical explanations and a suspension of disbelief. If feels like they did this just to mess with people who aren't really good at math.
