If you don't want to use an ability, DON'T USE IT.

But don't "Beg" Blizzard to take away the ability of others.
I think more abilities only enhances the game. Taking more abilities away and simplifying things only makes the game more boring.
Just take out all the stupid active= increase dmg cds...... i think clever cooldown moves like alter time etc are really cool and fun to use. But ability's like incarnation that other balance druid ability that you just activate to get a 60% increase dmg, the rogue 3 min dmg CD... they are just not needed.
Why are we talking advice on the number of abilities we should have from someone who hasn't played the game in a while and is just having trouble relearning his keybinds?
Don't squish anything just fix the classes you purposely crapped on this patch example Dk's ( How does a hero class drop to one of the worst classes in the game this expact??????) Also your simulation is wrong I can out dps and dmg all your meters, without having the BiS ...what a joke that was, But you still broke Dk's and need to fix them its the fact that none of the Dk's specs are half as powerful as they used to be Blood = Nerfed ....Frost= Nerfed harder hardly played ....Unholy= not played by anyone
Great get rid of the massive amount of crowd control. It is worse than ever. Even original was better than this. Now, it is a massive stun lock contest. Part of the problem are these new ability trees. They look to have added more cc to the game, and we use little to any of it in pve. Everything now is a big mass rush through instances and raids. And we're left with some really bad pvp. I've mentioned it in battlegrounds and NO ONE DISAGREES! It is weird for someone from the original to have their jaw hit the floor at the amount stun locking happening now.
I agree with you OP. I miss the old days where games were games you know just for entertainment and fun. I remember when one of Nintendo's first consoles was called an entertainment system. Nowadays people treat games like a career its pathetic. I'd rather be good at real life than at games. =/

Proud to be a real lifer and not a gamer!

Now, it is a massive stun lock contest.
Things I miss

Locks-mana drain
Warr-Fury 1 hand
Pally-divine intervention, seal of crusader, bless of sanc, bless of light, seal of martyr or seal of blood
Mage-food actually meaning something
Hunter-Volley, having melee weapons, eyes of beast
Priest-Mana Burn
Shaman-sentry totem
Rogue-having to level lock picking, specific weapon specs
Druids- Green wrath haha old hurricane,
just to name a few things that I miss that they would rethink

It was nice in BC when the only cc was Rogue, Mage, and Lock basically and other classes had stuff these didn't to make up for their losses like heals big dmg or or any kind of hybridness
I despise ability bloat, but I also love having a wide range of abilities to use. Having given this conundrum some thought over the last few months, what I would like to see is new abilities that give you a temporary form... kinda like metamorphisis. These forms would give you a new hotbar and restrict your abilities to those of that form.

This way the game can continue to grow as expansions come but you don't have to grow new fingers to hotkey abilities and you don't have to view the game world through the tiny spot in the middle of your screen that isn't made up of hotbars.
I am begging for an ability squish. This was one of the things I was shocked wasn’t touched up at blizzcon, and also one of the only areas blizzard seems to be behind their competition on. Blizzard seems to want to react quickly when other MMO’s have good ideas (AKA timeless isle going the Guid Wars 2 model) so why are they not following suit with crunching down on piano key tool bars. Even Diablo 3 recognized gameplay is more fun when you can actually bind your abilities to easily clickable buttons/keys.

I came back to wow in 5.4 and went “WTF is all this crap” when I logged on some of my characters. I’ve been playing my druid but the first time I logged on my level 80 that I hadn’t touched since WotLK I immediately logged off, started googling guides, and cracked out the ipad to watch videos on rotations, abilities and what not.

Why do I need all of this!!!!!! As a healer I have buttons for: a normal heal, a HoT, a 3 stack HoT, a half heal half HoT, a heal that heals more based on the HoTs, a cooldown instant heal that requires a specific HoT, an AOE HoT, a HoT I place on the ground, a detonate for that ground HoT, an “Oh Crap” AoE HoT, an ability that makes my HoT’s tick faster. And that’s just for heals……. There’s still all the other crap that needs to be used (damage reduction on self, damage reduction on tank, cooldowns). I’ve got my 4 mouse thumb buttons already mapped to my stuns/interrupts/movement abilities!

Things are just as bad as DPS…… I find that since WotLK I have no idea what’s happening in raids. I’m spending too much time locked into the interface/addons/notifications to manage the but load of abilities I have. Since I’m fixated on what’s going on with my ability bars I need more mods to notify me when something happens that requires me to move. I’ve got to make sure my DoT is up, my AoE DoT is up, my finishing move DoT is up, I’m using tigers fury every 30 seconds, I’ve constantly got save roar up, popping cool downs, trinkets………. I need to be watching bars tick down, I honestly can’t tell you what some of the bosses look like.

Even though I only had a few abilities I needed to use, before Cata I could actually see what’s going on and enjoy the fights and immersion. I had my abilities mapped to my keys/mouse buttons and would watch the boss for phase changes or triggers. Now things are just a mess. I had a buddy watched me play once and he asked what the hell was going on. I told him I was busy watching my bars tick down……..

I ask… why…. Why do we have so many abilities….. what is the point…… Blizzard said at the end of WotLK they wanted healing to feel like it did for shamans and not be spammy…… in WotLK shamans had a direct heal, an AoE heal, a HoT, and a preventative damage shield……. Plus a de-curse…… that was incredibly easy and fun to manage………. But what we have now is easily triple that!

I honestly think that’s why LFR is such a crapshoot some times. The average person isn’t going to start cracking open guides, watching videos on rotations, installing addons and customizing their interface just to have a chance at managing their few dozen abilities.

Lets rein it back in a bit shall we…… please……..

It is posts like this that keep me coming back to the forums. They show that not everyone is a troll. Kudos OP, you have my vote! 10/10
We do feel that, at least for some classes, there are a few too many buttons to keep on your action bars. It's an issue we'd ultimately like to solve, but something we have to be very, very careful with.

It's easy to look at your bar, go "LOOKIT ALL DEM BUTTONS", and decide that some of them need to go. In fact, we agree. It's much more difficult -- even dangerous -- to decide exactly which abilities to get rid of. Generally speaking, if you have an ability keybound, it's probably at least fairly important to your class. Getting rid of abilities you don't have bound doesn't really fix anything, so that means that, in most cases, we're talking about cutting the important ones.

That's not to say it can't (or won't) be done, but it does mean it's a fairly large task. Depending on the ability, there could be a lot of rebalancing or restructuring needed to make sure the class is still functional and fun to play. Again, it's something we'd like to do, it's just a very involved process.

List of Rogue abilities that could be removed, combined, or turned into a passive:
  • Slice and Dice
  • Expose Armor
  • Rupture
  • Sinister Strike
  • Backstab
  • Mutilate
  • Revealing Strike
  • Hemorrhage
  • Feint
  • Shadow Walk
  • Redirect
  • Shadow Blades

And tweak Glyphs / Talents appropriately to adjust / compensate.

  • Make Slice and Dice passive and make Energetic Recovery automatic.
  • Get rid of Sanguinary Vein for Subtlety Rogues and just scale damage up ~35% (maybe boost Sinister Calling to compensate).
  • Combine Sinister Strike, Backstab, and Mutilate into a single ability.
  • Get rid of Redirect and just stack combo points on the Rogue instead.
  • Get rid of Shadow Walk and just give Rogues a passive boost to stealth and stealth detection
  • Get rid of Revealing Strike and just passively boost Combat Rogue’s finishers
  • Just get rid of Hemorrhage, positioning shouldn't matter now so it's just a weak bleed.
  • Shadow Blades just gets macro'ed with other burst buttons like trinket, Shadow Dance, and AR/Killing Spree. If necessary, just make those stronger (or remove the need for so much burst)

what are you trying to petition, turning this games ability/talent system into diablo 3's?

i keep every ability on my taskbar (just cause im an organized freak) but other than that, i use them ALL.

Do you know how small my hands are? i am 5'1 irl if that helps out.

please grow a set and stop trying to dumb this game down.
Im all in for that...some classes like mages r extremely easy to play since the abilities they need to use to perform well r very few...classes like druid(ferals) on the other hand...

ah and get hid of savage roar...that thing is utter BS...as if losing gcds to shift forms isnt punishing enough...
People need to understand that PvP is only a small fraction of games. The main pull to MMOs is and always will be PvE, so just because you can't mash a button fast enough to win any PvP matches Shouldn't mean that everyone has to suffer. The "Macro" was invented for people like you so learn to use it. Blizzard lost a HUGE chunk of population do to the destruction of the Talent Tree and NO ONE can deny that. Blizzard's records show at least a 1/3 of it's population left after the skill tree restructure. If anything they need to bring back the ability of complex customization rather then give in to little kids that grasp the understanding of move combination and real gaming. What Blizzard is using now is boring and lame where is the is the edge of the seat constructive thinking in skill ability nowadays? 3 Choices out of 5 tier skill lvls is pointless... you might as well choose for us since half of the skills on most specs are NEVER used and are truly useless. If they REALLY want the comeback they desire then give us back our skill tree and stop listening to all the cry babies that can't figure out how to use their character even with guides that simplify everything for them anyways.
How do people end up resurrecting threads by complete accident that were made in 2013?
I just want my Eyes of the Beast back. :(
Folks, please be mindful of the date on a thread and do not resurrect/bump it if it is fairly old. If you wish provide feedback on a topic or participate in a discussion create your own or find one that is recent. This thread will now be locked.
