Tencent Owns Blizzard? (Case Closed)

General Discussion
I am just curious. I watched a video of some dude who boldly stated that Blizzard is owned by a super enterprise that is known as Tencent. It is much like the parasitic enterprise known as AT&T here in the U.S. but Tencent is in China.

So he said Tencent owns Blizzard. I searched "Tencent owns blizzard" on google and the wikipedia page says they own 12% as investors, not all of it.

Anyone knows more about this?

The video is in spanish, but here is the link if anyone is curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpaz9SH0Bfg

I hate the spreading of paranoia and misinformation.
Even if they do own 12%, that leaves 88% in other hands. I'm quite sure Bobby Kotick is smart enough to maintain control of his pride and joy.

Yet you just posted a paranoid and misinformed link to a video that has no basis in fact at all.

Doesn't Tencent own LoL now?
Tencent... that's about 2.85% of three-fifty.

Bold statements encourage bold skeptics. Nothing wrong with that. Don't take things at face value.

Just because a company owns a share of another company doesn't mean that they're going to get all grabby-hands and turn the company upside down. They may just want to capitalize on an investment.

Looks like they did some smart investing, to hit a $200 billion valuation...

AS the 12% its for Activision Blizzard as a Passive Investor... which means they have no say in the company.

I think you missed the point of "If anyone is curious" but okay.
I wonder who has majority shareholding of Blizzard and how big that share is.

It's not always a simple 51%.
Major shareholders of publicly traded companies are pretty easy to find.

Google can get you to a number of sites.

I wouldn't trust wikipedia for that kind of information.

I understand what you mean. I just wanted to know why he would be so bold as to say the Tencent completely owned Blizzard. Didn't make much sense, is all.

Thanks for your response.

Thank you! I do not trust the Wiki so much, but this is no formal research. In any case, I decided to ask here and see if anyone knew better.

Thank you :D
The investment is so Blizzard can distribute its games in China... China forbids many technology companies from operating there unless there is a specific amount of Chinese ownership/involvement.

p.s. TenCent owns the majority of Riot Games as well.

Tencent owns shares of Activision Blizzard. They were part of Kotick's partnership that bought around 25% of the shares after Vivendi sold out.

Think they own all of Riot.
