Expansion without a world ending problem.

General Discussion
A whole expansion based on a diversionary tactics villain.

We all rush in to attack and they say... no, not me, it's that guy, he's the bad guy.

We all go to take down the new guy and find he's not bad at all... so back to the villain and he goes... no, not me... it's that guy. He's the bad guy.

Rinse repeat.

Oh wait, that's too much like real life.
WoD wasn't really a world ending threat... we literally stopped and ended the threat the Iron Horde posed in the first quest line at level 90. Then we just wasted time until the next expansion.
There is something world threatening in Legion? Where? Oh, oh, oh you mean that intro thing we did? I thought that was solved. I've been getting mana for addicts and helping flying cows ever since.

CRAFTING HELL

No a epic shipbuilding profession where we gather resources and build ships to explore nearby islands and progress to build giant ocean going vessels . it could be on another world in our overall quest to destroy the burning legion but more focussed onexploration and gathering resources for the fight ahead. if any of you have read Voyage of the Dawn Treader thats the general idea. Pirates some legion that sort of thing

We already have boats, and airships, and portals.

This sounds boring af
World of Warcraft: World of Lovecraft

The world is now at peace. People are rebuilding. Help them build towns by gathering resources. Establish trade routes to other towns and even to former enemies. Become a trade baron between Ironforge and Thunder Bluff! Become a successful farmer in the fields in Westfall. Become a world famous vintner out of your orchards in the Ghostlands. Don't let madness seep in as you realize C'thulu is coming and cultists are hidden in plain sight everywhere.
Any idea that lets us play current content in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor
World Of Warcraft: Invasion of the media - After you save the world now you must save yourself from a new struggle. Media slander claims that you used proformance enhancing pots. Claims that you cheated via a mystery text called "the Internet" and have lude pictures of you drunk in comprimising positions with demons. Dodge the selfie camera's for dear life and do what you can mortals!!
Anything that lets us play the Barrens again as current content.

Here's an idea for a storyline or quest chain.

Mankrik has become so consumed by Hatred for the loss of his wife that he materializes into an Shadow of Hatred which corrupts The Barrens. Chuck Norris reveals himself from the shadows of Camp Turjo who is the ultimate tank to fight Mankrik as the last boss in RFD. It will be easy to Find a group since nobody quests in the area as tank anymore cause Chuck Norris killed them all.

Alliance will get similar quests in their areas like Westfall where Hogger has become all powerful and forced Jaina to Marry him.

With our characters so built up to be these demi-gods, it's hard to imagine us doing anything other than saving the world again from god-like foes.

And yet we'll still be asked to go and kill a couple of wolves for their pelts next expansion.

Subtlety and nuance are often lost

This is especially true of Blizzard. So many times I see things that just need a small tweak and blizz just blows it up and goes overboard with changes on it.
There's a few youtube lore people who said there's plenty left that blizz can do.

1. Pick back up lich king story (Bolvar)

2. South seas expac

3. Since it seems we're doing stuff against legions hq soon maybe an expac about going to other legion worlds and doing some clean up there.

4. They could probably do more time travel/alt universes stuff.

5. We could go over old lore stuff not shown in game. Via bronze/chromatic dragon flight.

6. Save the dragons expac. Help them have babies again.

Yeah but almost every expansion(beside maybe Vanilla) had one bad guy that was causing the Majortiy of problems, Illidan

And yet, as we learned in Legion, Illidan did bad things for the good of Azeroth. He himself was not a threat.
World of warcraft : The kinda hot army
World of warcraft : Annoyment of the not so healthy commander
World of warcraft : Small earthquake
World of warcraft : Rain in an asian place
World of warcraft : Bro club members of some planet somewhere
World of warcraft : The not so threatening green guys.
Personally I wouldn't mind another attempt at an expansion focusing on the faction conflict, preferably without demonizing and arbitrarily fellating individual major characters involved. Since Blizzard seems so damn keen on maintaining the faction conflict dynamic in some form it would do to have a plot that genuinely focused on it without having to fall back on them inevitably banning together against a common foe.

I don't actually expect such a thing to happen for several reasons but one can dream.
Vampires wake up from a long slumber
No need for a new race as all can get bitten
They fly as a bat and stealth like rogues, can drain life from distance
They are a danger to both horde and alliance, no need for new land

We already have werewo...I mean worgen so...
TL;DR: at bottom

The best non-world ending expansion is for the Horde and the Alliance to finally duke it out and resolve the issues and conflict between the factions that's been around since the Third War and Vanilla.

Every expansion since these, the pressure between the Horde and Alliance has been building, but unfortunately there's been World Ending bosses to deal with instead which forced the Horde and Alliance to push war between eachother off.

With the cowardly actions of the Horde on the Broken Shore and the death/sacrifice of King Varian as a result and prominent Alliance leaders who want the Horde dead as a result (Greymane, Jaina, etc). Could be a good background to a new expansion once the Legion are defeated. The forces of Greymane with support of Vereesa Windrunner and her High Elf forces launch a sneak attack against the Horde with the forces of Greymane pushing from Gilneas>Silverpine Forest>Tirisfall Glades>Undercity and Vereesa and whoever else pushing from South Shore/Hillsbrad>Alterac Mountains>Tirisfall Glades where the two forces meet together and hit the Forsaken city of Undercity from two sides and forces them to retreat to the north and flee to the Western Plaguelands and the sea.

Reclaim both Gilneas for the Gilneans and the former city of Lorderon for the High Elves, and push the Forsaken out of the area forcing them to retreat to the safety of the Ghostlands and Eversong Woods/Silvermoon with the Blood Elves..

This could make for a nice opening for an Alliance vs Horde expansion. Alliance kicking some Forsaken butt, reclaiming their former cities from the Forsaken, and the displaced Forsaken along with the Horde looking to deal a counter-attack for this... Then the other leaders of the Alliance and Horde could be caught off guard by this and some either denounce it and stay out of the conflict (Night Elf/Tauren) and others use it as an opportunity to deal with the many issues between the factions or hatred for eachother or just join on regardless of their not wanting war to prevent issue with their people (King Anduin wanting non-conflict but the people of Stormwind who want revenge for their fallen King and years of previous Horde attacks and losses, who are celebrating the reclamation of Gilneas and Lordaeron and would have Anduin's head if he didn't officially have Stormwind join the new war).

This expansion could even help lead to the next expansion after this, With the forces of Azeroth fighting amongst themselves, this could leave them vulnerable to a new threat that's been taking advantage of the situation and distracted eyes pointed elsewhere. Another Old God could have escape prison and/or even the Void Lords could make their presence known and kick off a Whispers of the Old Gods expansion.. or any other expansion really.

TL;DR: Have a classic Warcraft type expansion, where it's just some good old fashioned Alliance vs Horde. We can settle our differences and deal with conflict/hatred that's been building over the years with events such as The Forsaken/Sylvanas/Plague, Fall of Gilneas due to Forsaken invasion, Bombing of Theramore by the Horde, Death of King Varian which is blamed on Horde, etc. There's plenty of reasons Blizzard can use to kick off a War between the Alliance and Horde once any remaining active external threats (Burning Legion) are neutralized.
I really liked how Cataclysm and MoP were going at first. While Cataclysm did have the backdrop of Deathwing trying to destroy the world, in the beginning it was much like MoP that focused on the escalating war for territory between the Horde and Alliance. Most other expansions had the Horde and Alliance conflict in the backdrop as both factions race to kill the baddie, but those two seemed to really have it in your face.

Totally understand your viewpoint here. But I've always seen myself as an adventurer or Alliance soldier as opposed to "Commander" or anything else of vast power and prestige. This way I'm never too big/important/etc to help a farmer kill some pesky wolves.
MoP was more about exploration, conflict, and adventure. Nothing really world shattering. Garry was going to go all world conquest with the heart of an old god, but that's about it.
