Destruction Warlock Resource Changes in 7.2.5

Class Development

As we've mentioned before, we’re making a number of changes to the resource model for Destruction Warlocks in the next patch. The goal is to create smoother, more granular, less random Soul Shard generation and make Chaos Bolt casts feel more impactful.

First, for Destruction Warlocks, Soul Shards are being split into parts of 10, which we’re currently calling Soul Shard Fragments. Mechanically, this will be similar to the Mists of Pandaria resource system of Burning Embers, except we want to go with a consistent Soul Shard visual, updated Soul Shard UI (work in progress), and name for the resource across all 3 Warlock specs. Some relevant spell changes:
  • Incinerate generates 1 Soul Shard Fragment. Doubled on critical strikes. Fire and Brimstone (talent) will cause Incinerate to generate 1 Soul Shard Fragment per target hit, also doubled on critical strikes.
  • Immolate periodic damage has a 50% chance to generate 1 Soul Shard Fragment. 100% chance on critical strikes.
  • Conflagrate generates 6 Soul Shard Fragments.
  • Dimensional Rift (artifact active) generates 3 Soul Shard Fragments.

The net result of these changes is that every baseline rotational damage spell will contribute to Soul Shard generation, pushing your resource forward at a steady pace.

Second, Soul Shard generation/refund rate is being reduced overall, mainly for the single-target rotation. However, this is coupled with major damage increases to both Soul Shard spenders - Chaos Bolt and Rain of Fire. Combined, this means that Chaos Bolts will be cast less frequently, but they will hit much harder:
  • Soul Shard refund chance of Soul Conduit (talent) reduced to 12%. Soulsnatcher (artifact bronze trait) reduced to 3% per point.
  • Chaos Bolt damage increased by 40%. Rain of Fire damage increased by 25%.

For the AOE rotation, Fire and Brimstone (talent) will cause Incinerate to generate Soul Shard Fragments per target hit, which would largely push Immolate out of the AOE rotation with enough targets. Alternately, if you want to go down the route of maintaining Immolate on all targets in a clumped AOE situation, Cataclysm (talent) will have reduced cooldown (30 sec) and slightly reduced cast time, making it easier for you to do so.

As usual, everything discussed here will continue to be iterated on during 7.2.5 PTR and may change based on further playtesting and feedback.
About time!
Much excite
This resource model seems to be homogenising classes when Legion was meant to have them diverge a little.

Cast X -> +1 to <insert resource name>
Cast Y (costs 'v' <insert resource name>)
Repeat

I had thought the idea of the chunkiness in Warlock's shards was to reflect a different style to 'focus/rage/energy' etc ?

Surely a more creative solution is available ?
why are you guys so reluctant to just change the soul shards back to burning embers? The burning embers fit the theme of destro so well and Keeping them soul shard fragments just for consistency just seems like a bad decision.

Also why not bring back the old fire and brimstone mechanic for destro, once again it fit the motif of destro warlocks being chaotic and destructive, plus it was a great way for destro to do good aoe.

Lastly please consider looking into the pet specific artifact talents as they really gimp the playstyle by making the warlock sacrifice utility/dps just to get use out of a pet based artifact talent. On that note please consider changing grim. of sacrifice back to how it use to work, because right now it's not worth the sacrifice especially if we lose utility just for a "chance" of dealing more damage
Any chance you can tell us whats happening with Wreak Havoc?

It's probably holding destro back more than almost anything else. It has way too much power in it.
But this still doesnt change much if the MASTERY is still RNG for destro?

correct me if I'm wrong but I had to switch from destro to affliction cuz I dislike RNG specially at damage..
It only took a whole bloody year. This is great news! Can we get the class visuals we had with embers? You know, we would become surrounded by a soft flame and the orbs/crystals that floated above us was a great touch that I sorely miss.
i wanna cry dude im actually crying is this real? it could be? now if we get baseline port man im gonna run naked on the stream with tear of joy and hapiness.

im actually thanksful to u guys that keep your promess that u made in the 7.1.5 Q&A this seems the right direction for the spec, anyways any plans to revert GocSac to what it was in Mop? or at least make it relevant again? atm its a dead talent, and speaking of dead talents backdraft its like 99% the "to go " talent in the first row as its 2 mandatory for the spec had u considerate making it base line and remplace it with something else , i would suggest making the T20 set bonus a talent that remplace backdraft in that teir

I want this back so badly.

But seriously thank you blizzard! :)
please bring back the self heal ember tap destro warlocks use to have, the whole drain life mechanic just doesn't fit destro well at all. It's the only shadow spell the spec has and it's just terrible
Great to hear it!

Another vote for the ember visuals. Floating orbs and more fire with more embers was a very cool visual and great visual information.
I like the direction you're taking by these changes. Mop embers were a good design.

My one recommendation would be to reevaluate the tier 60 talent position of soul harvest. In my opinion you have two aoe focused talents and a single target at the moment, with the f&b changes, i can assume soul harvest will fade away from even being an option just because the shard gen is going to be highly valuable; esp with the changes to refunds.

I agree. I see no reason to not set each of the 3 specs really back to their visual/thematic secondary resource, even if the resource is mechanically the same.

I miss becoming a bundle of green gnomish felfire fury.
And I also miss glowing purple demonic runes horns and wings.
And I don't actually miss the hovering soul shards (or felfire orb glyph) but other people might!

As for the changes itself, I'd be fine with something slower and with less refund RNG. Right now my Chaos Bolt with Soul Conduit and relic traits can sometimes generate more shards than it costs... which is really awkward. I'd appreciate less of a refund focus.

oh yep also that wow verdant sphers back PLZ it wont hurt anyone
Demo OP in PvP? Easy fix! Buff destro! 40% stronger chaos bolts for everyone! Just oneshot people whynot
Rerolling to back to my warlock RIGHT now
Sounds like there's some promise and a lot of thought to this idea.

Only one concern that I hope is paid attention to while testing this resource rework. As mentioned above, the layer of rng that is destruction's mastery may be a problem. Right now the severe swings from small mastery rolls to large mastery rolls is partially smoothed by how regularly chaos bolts can be cast. T20 also has an interesting interaction with this that might counter this concern for Tomb of Sargeras. I just hope that you keep track of the potential harshness of bad mastery rolls (without T20) when chaos bolt comes less frequently and is less able to smooth through repetition.

Otherwise, looking forward to these interesting changes!
I stopped playing my main because the "New Improved Destro" stunk up the place.

I'm now a Beast Mastery Hunter (Gnome of course, with robot pets) and having a blast! If you could just put Destro back the way it was in Mists of Pandaria, that would be nice.

And when you do that, STOP BLEEPING with it!!

"For Gnomeregan!"
Okay blizz, as promised my first born will be sacrificed.

Great news, both generation and chaos bolt damage.

Although, due to the resulting less casts of chaos bolt, eradication would seem to require a rework as well.
