I was going to create it. :(

Here's my planned OP:

-------------------------

Here's some thoughts about void elves. It's a nice summary of everything I've been saying in these threads, plus a few additions now that I'm actually playing a void elf.

--- CUSTOMIZATION ---

I feel like void elf customization is very limiting. You can be a blue elf... or a blue elf... or a bluer elf. Despite having half the amount of skin options, Lightforged draenei and Nightborne feel like having more variation. Don't like tendrils in your hair? Well, you have very few options. And so on.

Obviously, there's people who like that aesthetic. An entire race based on it, however, is very limiting.

Skin Colors: Light and dark gray (maybe even an almost black) skin, and light and dark purple (real purple, not purplish blue) skins would be welcome. Also, now that I'm actually playing a void elf, I'm backtracking to my original position and really want some flesh-like skins, even if they are slightly purplish, bluish or gray to show they're tainted.

Hair colors: Why are all hair colors faded? I feel silver-blue, deep red and black hair colors would be awesome and fit the race very well.

Hair Styles: I think some of the tendril hair options should be duplicated with versions without tendrils. Not everyone likes tentacles in their heads, you know.

And finally: females need more short-hair options, while males need more long-hair options.

Tattoos/Warpaint: Alleria has blue warpaint over her face and arm. Why not adopt warpaint in that style for her followers? Warpaint can have bright colors that contrast with the faded skins and give more life to the characters. Use celtic-like styles for painting (something that has been related to the elves since Warcraft 2, but never used in WoW except for Alleria), with vivid colors like deep blue, violet and red.

Warpaint is a sign of customs, of culture. Imagine a void elf with deep red hair, red warpaint and bluish skin. Or one with gray skin, violet warpaint and silver-blue hair. It would have way more personality than what we currently have.

--- LORE ---

But the real problem with void elves lies in their lore, which is non-existant. I'm still amazed by how little thought was given to the "ren'dorei" in their introduction. Lore-wise, they feel pathetic compared to any other allied race, or even much-neglected races like the gnomes.

They have no identity beyond: "I use Void, I have great willpower, I look like an emo". The entirety of void elf lore is linked to Alleria, but she does not even represent a typical void elf, either in origin or look.

And this worries me a lot, because lore makes it easier for us to "feel" our characters. When I play my newly created nightborne, I have all the experiences in Suramar in my mind. I get reminded of Talyssra, Valtrois, Occuleth, Silgryn, Arluin and so on. I remember the struggle to destroy the Nightwell and raise the Arcan'dor.

Void elves have nothing like that. They just are there. I have no emotional connection with them, no knowledge of their personalities or perspectives. They feel empty. We don't even have a place to call our "capital city", all we have is a collection of floating rocks in space, without even a building.

And I fear this mean void elves will get very little coverage going forward. Already we get datamined info from BfA, and we get highmountain tauren and nightborne having roles in the Horde story, while there's no sign of void elves and lightforged draenei with the Alliance.

Yes, Alleria is there in the Siege of Lordaeron, but, again, she does not feel like a true void elf. Will void elf lore be limited to showing Alleria's exploits?

A race needs more than this. WAY more than this.

When nightborne and highmountain tauren were shown in panels and trailers for Legion, I felt they were asspulls as well. "Uh, there's an entire new race of elves that we never heard about?". The revamp of the Broken Isles, which felt nothing like their incarnations in previous games, seemed way off.

But Legion made an awesome work in fleshing the isles and its denizens. The nightborne and highmountain had development and were given time to grow on us.

Void elves and (to a lesser extent) Lightforged draenei didn't have those advantages. I was expecting the introductory quest for void elves to cover a lot of ground on them. Even if rushed, it should have information, even if it was just gossip text from NPCs.

Instead, we were left with this half-finished race. We don't know even basic things about them, like if they can transform other elves (or how it's done, or why any elf in their right mind would like to join them). They have no named NPCs beyond Umbric, a character that was barely shown and had no role beyond being a damsel in distress in the recruitment scenario.

And, if the void elves were chosen to be playable instead of high elves, we still demand information on how these two thalassian groups relate to each other. How will they organize themselves? Why not make these groups symbiotic in some way, as they are led by two of the Windrunner sisters? So far, all we got is a void elf walking with a high elf in Stormwind, and two high elf wayfarers in Telogrus. We need more than that!

In the previous thread, for instance, I made a small revision of what the recruitment questline could have been. I included high elves there, showed rivalry with blood elves, showcased Umbric with a slightly bigger presence, and included another known character among the void elf ranks, already making them more diverse.

You can check it here: https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20760948166?page=14#post-262

So far, void elf lore is empty and directionless. Some people may argue that they need time, that they are new, but if that's the case, they shouldn't be playable. There's a dozen other races that have more "right" to be playable than this upstart group.

--- CONCLUSION ---

While I know some people don't care about lore, choosing their characters based on visuals or racials, any race that lacks the first and severely limits the second is doomed to fail.

Yeah, I know void elves are quite popular right now. But for now the only "new" thing to do is unlock and level the allied races. In the Alliance, void elves only compete with the Lightforged draenei (which are very lackluster), and people aren't worried about gearing for a raid. Almost everyone will soon have a void elf character. But how many will level them to 110? How many will keep them as main when BfA is released and we need to advance to 120? How many will be doing raids with them?

The success of each allied race will only be measurable once we get into BfA. For now, the sheer lack of new content will create the illusion that way more people are playing the allied races. And elves will always be more popular than races that have hooves, horns and tails.

--- LORE QUESTIONS (AND GUESSES) ---

Can new elves be turned void elves?
Answer: It's implied that yes, but we don't know.
My guess: Yes, other elves can be turned, and are being recruited within both blood and high elves.

How are new void elves made?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: Willing subjects, after some training to resist the whispers, experience a ritual in Telogrus that turns them.

Can void elves reproduce?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: No idea.

What does the transformation mean? Does it change your senses? Does it make you stronger/faster/precognitive?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: Only dedicated void users (Warlocks and Priests) really "master the void". Other void elves just enhance their strength/agility, or get new senses (like precognition skills).

Why are there warriors/hunters/monks among them?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: As said above, the transformation can augment any skills.

Why would any sane elf want to be infused with dark power that is known to be heavily corruptive?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: The void elves are more of a super-elite force than a real "race". The ones seeking the transformation do so to either study the void or serve the Alliance. Their "civilian" population (however tiny it may be) will end up being normal elves.

Why would blood elves abandon Silvermoon and all they love to become void-infused?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: The void infusion frees the elf from magic addition. Those who were unhappy with the Silvermoon government but couldn't leave due to be "chained" to the Sunwell choose the transformation to overcome those limits.

Why would high elves, who were known to reject dark magics and even magic in general, want to turn void?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: They are interested in freeing themselves from the Sunwell, as well as drawing more elves away from Silvermoon.

How many void elves are there?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: Less than a hundred currently, but potentially growing.

What's their relationship with the Alliance high elves?
Answer: It's implied that they get along fine, but we don't know.
My guess: The Silver Covenant is working together with the ren'dorei, as their leaders are sisters, and some of them are joining the void elf ranks. However, the void elves aren't entirely trusted and are closely watched.

What exactly are Alleria's powers? What can she do, really?
Answer: We don't know. So far, it's "whatever the plot demands" ability.
My guess: I think Blizzard really intends to keep her powers as "whatever the plot demands" ability.

What are the void elves' innate powers?
Answer: Same as above.
My guess: I think the transformation enhances your innate skills and gives you a connection to the void. However, it doesn't get any better than that unless you delve further into void magic (Warlock/Priest).

What do other Alliance races, specially draenei and night elves, think of void elves?
Answer: We don't know, thought a few in Darnassus imply the night elves, for whatever reason, seem to tolerate them.
My guess: Again, the void elves aren't entirely trusted and are closely watched. The night elves only tolerate them as long as they are useful, but would gladly kick them out.

What seems to be direction the story will go with them?
Answer: We don't know.
My guess: I won't even try to guess that.

--- FUN SUGGESTION: "WHISPERS" ---

It would be fun if void elf characters heard "Old God Whispers" (voice/text) sometimes. It's a big part of being void elf, but the game does not reflect that.

Just put a very small chance of them happening on certain events, making it a rare event.

Examples:

On Killing a creature:
"They all deserve it. You'll will deliver them death."
"Did you like that? Isn't it satisfying?"
"This is all you were born to do."
"Yes! Yes! Yes!"
"Mercy is for the weak. Feast on the strong ones!"
"Feel the strength that courses throught you."
"The Void will consume everything."

When Entropic Embrace procs:
"Yes, use your power. Summon the Void!"
"Show no weakness."
"They all want you dead."
"Death is near."
"Let the darkness overtake you."
"Our thousand eyes are set upon you."
"Power is within your grasp! Seize it!"
"Kill them all!"

When you talk to a NPC:
"Your allies do not trust you."
"You'll be betrayed soon."
"No one will lament your death."
"We are everywhere. We are everything."
"Why do you insist on helping these people?"
"They all think you are just a monster."
"They are watching you. Be ready to defend yourself."

When accepting a quest:
"All you are is a servant. You could be so much more."
"Betray them when they least expect it."
"Why bow to mortals while you can be a god?"
"All your power, and this is what you chose to use it for?"
"Play the Alliance against the Horde. Let the world burn."
"You are being betrayed."

When you die:
"Freedom at last..."
"The flesh was weak. Now, you ascend to godhood."
"One with the Void..."
"Ny'alotha awaits!"
"Now, we feast on your soul."

sorry alamara i caught the last one closing just as the final post was made and i went ahead and made the next one, that said i do like your input especially with the whispers
Really? The flavour's good, and that shadow knife was very popular, but that was just for one expansion. Would you really want the same handful of whispers to occur for the whole life of the game?

Just wondering.

Also thinking. You're saying that Alleria's not representative of most void elves, but the same could be said of Illidan's relationship to playable demon hunters, and that doesn't detract from the class's feel. The situation's not identical, but in fairness, racial fantasy has generally taken a back seat to classes and factions anyway. Actually, if we're honest, putting Legion and death knights aside would generally place class firmly in the middle.
Thank you for the pun, we are blessed.

There were other cursed items that spoke to the player, including Garrosh's axe Xal'atoh, the cursed Ashbringer and some others. Also, whispers are featured in many Old God fights: Il'gynoth, Yog-saron, C'thun.

Whispers are part of the lore of void elves. They do not need to be common, they should be rare enough to be creepy and unexpected.

What? DHs are pretty much based on Illidan entirely. The difference is that Illidan has a perma-demon form, but that's because he's the most powerful one.

The situation's not identical, but in fairness, racial fantasy has generally taken a back seat to classes and factions anyway.

That's no excuse to not present a new race properly. Every race has had a proper introduction, except void elves (and Lightforged, some may say, but it's still not comparable with how little void elves got).

This is a joke right ?

Void elf have pale blue, deep blue and a couple of variants of those. LF draenei have white and slightly blueish white. I can literally go drow elf on ren'dorei if I feel like it.

I think it helps give Void elves a little more depth with their Void powers. Besides the passive effect that turns on every couple of minutes, they just look like tiny Night elves.

my apologies i shortened the large quote
If they're rare enough to avoid being bothersome, they're too rare to be very impactful at all. You're right in pointing to other whispering items, but all of those were designed to be impermanent. Blizzard could add whispers, but the players who'd care are the same ones who have the wherewithal to make emotive macros to accomplish the same essential effect.

I'm still standing by Entropic Embrace for my choice of most flavourful racial ability. I did have a bunch of fun with Shadowmeld in some Kaldorei days, though. And I'll give a shout right now to Stoneform, though I've never had a dwarf character.
And bringing something from the previous thread:

Posted by Screaym

High elf paladins are more iconic than any other racial group of the class behind dwarves and humans. For one thing, they were part of the original order. They'd probably just exclude warlocks and the hero classes. Maybe rogues.

See this is the asseveration I don't get, about high elves being an iconic paladin race. There are two known high elf paladins, one of them is a blood elf now. How is that iconic? And I am saying this as someone who wants high elf paladins, but to say they are "iconic" is simply not true.

Iconic High Elf classes are Warriors, Mages, Priests and Hunters, and Warrior barely makes it because of the High Elven swordsmen of warcraft III. Again, I want high elf paladins, but Iconic goes far beyond merely plausible.

Blizzard probably avoided the Covenant in the void elf story because they want to keep that faction available for other storylines. What they actually did gave players the option of a high elf backstory without causing potential lore complications elsewhere. Pretty elegant.

That's the only reason that I can find that makes sense, tbh.

Speculating, I'm less about it being high elves, and more about maybe some day being about half elves, which in terms of solely novelty, I think I would like more -as long as half elves are presented as the "legacy" of the high elves.

it is simple, they just want to troll for the sake of trolling, they wish to derail the conversation. if people want to waste their time trolling, then i say let them and just ignore them. no matter how hard they try, these discussion threads wont end despite their efforts

i for one wish to continue the discussion, for example what do you think the void elves did to win the battle of lordaeron?

I don't think it's about their culture not being "primitive", it's more that when you play a Human or a Blood Elf, or any other race for that matter, your character comes from a specific "faction" within that race. This lends them the ability to choose what they want to "be" when they grow up, but only insofar as what that particular society offers.

Playable Humans are always from the nation of Stormwind. Playable Blood Elves are always from Silvermoon. While it's possible for there to be "break aways" in the story and for members of those races to join "opposing factions" and learn new skills, that's not something that's on offer to player characters.

If those classes were ever added to those races, I would expect specific backstory to be created for how those races adopted those techniques and rituals, such as with gnome hunters "creating" and taming mechanical beasts.

Blood Elves = Silvermoon High Elves.
Void Elves = Telogrus Rift High Elves.
High Elves = Silver Covenant High Elves.
