But Blizzard is requiring 10+ years! Developers with the aptitude to do video game development after 10 years pull closer to $150-175k

And to the extent that is true, all involved are likely to enter into the negotiations understanding that. Once you are past the most basic jobs at most private employers, ultimately everything is subject to market forces and hence negotiable. This is not news to the people it applies to so it is not like it needs to be spelled out in detail on every job posting.

82k is over 40 thousand more than your average wage. It's nothing to sneeze at.

You read the position descriptions right? The OP was outright lying OR found a typo. Most Blizzard positions don't require 10+ years experience. Yth has asked for anyone to find an entry level or lower level position with that requirement so he can ensure any typos, if they exist, are sent to the Careers team.

The only positions that require 10+ years at Blizzard are some Senior or Executive level positions which would certainly pay a Senior level salary, not entry level or junior - which is what 82K is in CA.

So no, Blizzard is not requiring 10+ years for most positions nor are they paying someone with that kind of experience a "Software Engineer" salary. They would be paid as a Senior or Lead which pays more.
82k is peanuts in SoCal. Holy crap it's expensive down there.

One could actually live on that down there. In Silicon Valley, not so much :(

Blizzard doesnt hire humans for these types of jobs. They hire gnomes.

No wonder they're short on supply.

So in a pretty noble move Blizz has offered the devs from the shut down studio Bosskey Productions jobs and linked them to their career applications

HOWEVER if you browse through those applications these are entry level jobs that Blizz is asking for 10+ YEARS of experience for

Really Blizz? It's no wonder you have 200+ Openings when you want Veteran devs cleaning the floors. Probably speaks a lot about the state of WoW.

A lot of the people working for Boss Key are veterans of the gaming industry.

I mean, do you have any HR experience? Any knowledge of how industry recruitment works? Or did you just look at the jobs page, see that 10 years experience was needed and just run with that in order to bash Blizzard's gesture to a studio that fell on hard times and had to shut down?

Entry level job at Blizzard probably pays more than most people's jobs in this thread. I'll gladly mop your floors for that sort of money.

Video game industry jobs pay less than other software companies almost across the board. They don't need to offer high pay because people want to work there regardless.

Looking at Payscale

Software Engineer
Blizzard: $82k
Amazon: $106k

And Software Engineers are pretty well paid in general.

People hate working at Amazon. They have to pay more.
I mean, my husband and I just looked at job postings for Blizzard ~3 weeks ago. Think the only ones that required 10+ years were management and senior positions.
this is how gossip spreads people, you take one thing that is true and you falsely apply it to everything. Should just lock this thread imo.

If you don't like it create your own company.
You just got absolutely annihilated.

Side note, if you just completed a bachelor's program, and you don't know how to convey your experience, or didn't involve yourself in internships, well then, that's on you, and not the company's HR you want to work for.

Back when I was job hunting I notice a lot of "entry level programmer with 4+ years of experience" positions.

This. Where I work our associates need to have 4+ years. If you want anything better than doing paperwork, you better have 10+.

Is King of Stormwind entry level?

Anduin doesn’t have 10+ years and if his resume says he does, he lied!

Show me his birth certificate.

Confirmed: King Anduin was born in Kenya. Where is his long-form birth certificate?

They are not asking for a rocket scientist to make a common widget. Besides, that would be a waste of recruiting time to hire someone over qualified who would get bored in a heartbeat.
And this is why people with actual experience or an education hate HR drones. Who cares if it might be your dream job, some HR jerk thinks you'd get bored because it's too easy. Who cares if you might build something amazing and work for cheap, the HR twit thinks you'll just leave in 6 months. No way it could be worth an hour on the phone just to find out if the applicant is actually excited about the job.

*Maybe if they got rid of the bad HR reps, they might be able to hire someone to fix the forums.

You must look at it from the perspective of the HR manager. They've probably seen it before where people get on board, they find out the field sucks and the pay is crap (game designers make crap pay and work long hours), and they get burned out in a year or two and quit. They may have actually been genuinely super-excited to come on board, but after experiencing the industry for what is it, they may not like it so much anymore. Not a problem, except the amount of money and time spent on hiring and training that person just went out the window because you have to do it again. Meanwhile, the rest of the team suffers because they are down a man.

Employees are an investment.
thalyssra waited for ten of thousand of years, and did she complaint? thought so... :P
you are basically taking a pay cut by working in the game industry
Sometimes "good guy Blizz" really is just being a good guy. Sounds an awful lot like OP was misconstruing information or (more sinisterly) flat-out lying in an attempt to attack them.

Haven't seen anyone respond to Ythisens' post asking for proof yet. Says a lot.

People tend to do that.

People are the worst.
