Asmongold enabling Co-Dependant Forum Toxicity

General Discussion

Have you noticed the Wow community has become increasingly toxic after Asmongold's "State of BFA" video?

All of a sudden forum threads appear criticising Blizzard, parroting Asmongold's talking points, NOT because they want to help the game, but because they want Asmongold to react to their post.

In psychology this is known as a Co-dependant Relationship, where there is an "excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity."
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codependency

Because of Asmongold's tendency to react to other people's material, especially on the Wow forums, people become encouraged to write increasingly radical and extreme posts to get his attention, and once he has reviewed the post, they feel a sense of validation.

But as more and more people become involved, this then transforms into the "Bandwagon effect", where "people do something primarily because other people are doing it, regardless of their own beliefs."
Source: https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/stronger-the-broken-places/201708/the-bandwagon-effect

Now what is the REAL secret as to why Asmongold is doing this?

Well the secret of the bandwagon effect, and people's need for approval from an authoritative figure such as Asmongold, is it is a form of Manipulation.

Asmongold is using his followers to initiate the change he wants in the game. For example, Asmongold wants to remove LFR, some of these "remove lfr" posts are written by people who ONLY do LFR, therefore Asmongold is making people assert an opinion that is clearly not their own.

This way Asmongold creates the illusion that a lot of people want a certain change to influence Blizzard's game design, when in fact he is the puppeteer working the strings behind the scenes.

Now this brings me to my next point of Asmongold's hold over the Wow community.....the Asmongold Cult.

A cult is defined as those that "use manipulative techniques and mind control to heighten suggestibility and subservience....The aim is to advance the goals of the group’s leaders...."
Source: https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/the-mind-body-connection/201407/cults-and-the-mind-body-connection

One of the ways a cult accomplishes this is to overwhelm members by using various techniques such as "lecturing on and on for hours, flashing lights, spinning around in circles, all of which assault the senses and break down a person’s ability to think."

If you watch Asmongold's "The State of Battle for Azeroth"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11M9CCNGNNw

1) Asmongold is lecturing his viewers on what the game should and shouldn't be.

2) Flashing lights: Wow gameplay on one side, his face in a corner, on Twitch there would donations shout outs, chat on the right side. Visually it would be overwhelming to any viewer trying to process so many things at once.

3) Spinning around in circles: (6:03) of the Video Asmongold spins around in a circle. Also on the Island expedition he runs around the island in a circle.

Is all this a coincidence?

And I can't be the only that has noticed this, doesn't Asmongold look a bit like Jesus? The same hair colour and beard type. Another coincidence?

Now I understand that the insinuation that Asmongold is some cult leader is preposterous and absurd, but let's look at the facts:

Asmongold makes a video with certain viewpoints.

All of a sudden, General Forums is filled with posts that word for word repeat what he is saying.

Asmongold then reacts to these posts, encouraging his viewers to write even more radical posts

As Ian Fleming once said "Once is happenstance, Twice is coincidence, Three times is enemy action".

EDIT:
Nixxiom reacted to Asmongold's video, and I really agreed with what he said

At 5:38 Nixxiom said "Asmongold knows exactly what he's doing, he is not an idiot"

Asmongold is a LOT smarter than he looks

EDIT 2:
Since we're talking about Asmongold, this is exclusive footage of him and his fans celebrating after they've invaded the forums.

I think you're reading way too far into this.
"The day we let Asmongold guide our opinions is the day we die"

hi stream
Didn't read. Every time someone describes a player or community as "toxic" my eyes just glaze over.

General Discussion has always been full of hostility. Primarily, it has been hostility from the "casual" crowd (which they often self-identify as; I am not using it as a pejorative here) directed at the "elite" crowd (which is typically defined as "anyone who does a higher tier of content than me").

I'm not surprised that one ill-defined side of this vague division in the player base is sick of the other side's !@#$. If anyone here could hold an honest discussion in good faith, maybe the community would get somewhere. Blizzard doesn't read their own forum for good reason.
How do we know that you aren't one of Asmongold's trolls yourself?

GUARDS, WHO IS THIS DWARF? AN ILLUSION? WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?
Asmogold stole my bike
@OP

I disagree with pretty much everything you just said. First, let me say that I am not a fan of Asmongold if anything can't stand the guy.

With that said his state of BFA was spot on, everything he stated was true, this is the worse expansion ever! I feel like this game is more of a job rather than a hobby. I have to talk myself into playing twice a week now just to cap conquest. This game for me right now has lost it's luster. Should be renamed Legion 2.0
Or maybe it's called cult of personality or leading the charge? A lot of people either agree with him or his sentiment, and even if they don't like him they will support him cause he;s sticking his head out. Not everything is textbook psychology, and even if it is you need to actually prove it not speculate.

I think what most people who detract him fail to remember is that Asmongold plays this game for a living. Sure, you may not agree with his viewpoints, but he's played this game long enough to have a pretty good grasp of when he had fun and when he didn't. It's in his best interests to play a game he enjoys, otherwise he'd hate himself. He, more than anyone on GD, wants this game to be good.
Nah. Forums have been fired up ever since people hit 120 and realized blizz released this expansion without the "blizz polish". We're here because the game is boring and subs are cheap.

When alliance found out horde got a 3-week headstart on ilvl-restrictionless free 340 farm it felt far worse.
Community has always been toxic and will always be toxic. It cannot get any more toxic than it already is because it has already reached rock bottom back in vanilla and has stayed there for 14 years with no signs of change on the horizon.

Have you noticed that you are also contributing to this phenomenon right now?

I agree with you 100%, spot on!
This thread made me lol. Thank you, it was much needed.
Everything Asmongold said in his state of BFA video was correct. But people have been flooding the forums with how horrible BFA is since alpha. You just didn't notice cause you didn't read the forums till you saw Asmongold's video.

If I played Fantasy Football, I think I'd have a name for my team. Or perhaps an in-game guild:
