Server Hop in BFA

Professions
I keep finding conflicting information on the internet about this issue. Can you still realm hop to find extra nodes like you could in Legion and before? I never used any realm hop addin before, but now I think it would be a good idea. I keep hearing that the Addis’s no longer work. If realm hopping still works, what addon should I use? Thanks.
Pretty sure that Blizzard took steps to disable those addons in BfA. However, realm hopping is still possible.

My understanding is that the add-ons would auto-create custom groups forcing you to a different shard, then leave the group. Blizzard just prevented the ability to auto-create a group. So now you just have to manually join a group...say by searching for the weekly world boss...and then drop it.
Do I have to be in the same zone as the group leader to realm hop? So, if I wanted to realm hop in Tanaan Jungle, I would join a group doing Hellfire Citadel, then quickly leave?

That I am not sure of.
The way sharding works, you're never really "realm hopping" any more.

At any given time, there is some number of shards of Tanaan Jungle (or anywhere else) existing at a time. Enough so it isn't crowded but also isn't too empty. The different shards are each hosted on a different server but it's out of the players' control. The system just makes a new one when the others are getting full. Until then, no matter what server you are from, you will be sent to one of the existing shards when you enter Tanaan.

In a low traffic area like Tanaan now is, there might only be one or two shards up at a time. So even if you join a group from another server, you still might end up in the same Tanaan shard. The only way to force change to a different shard is to (a) know there is one, by having someone else be in a different shard to you, and (b) be invited by them to a group, which will send you to their shard. That is hard to do casually.

The flip side is, if you are pretty sure that Tanaan is busy enough at the time to have multiple shards up, you can try just relogging, without messing around with joining groups at all. When you relog you will be put back in whichever shard has the least people in it, which may well be a different shard.

It all sounds very complicated from the perspective of the old "join a group to switch servers" trick. They weren't actively trying to stop that, the new system is really just to load balance better, but it has very much changed how that used to work.

So what you're telling me is, actively server hopping in old areas is pretty much dead?

Sounds like it. However I have heard of players forming groups to farm Khorium in Area-52, which each player taking a different quadrant and farming everything as they loop the area. Whenever someone finds a Khorium node, everyone descends on that location to loot it before returning to their designated loops.

Similarly, players are taking advantage of respawn rules in quest areas to quickly farm rare drops like mounts or pets. So it might be plausible to form a group to clear a zone of nodes, forcing faster respawns then you would normally get. Just a thought.
