Orcs And Trees

Story Forum
An odd topic but one thing I noticed is when questing through Draenor and such you see all these orcs having modest homes and their camps are built into the land - not really damaging the forests or snow caps around them. You know, living 'one' with nature and such. (at least some of them)

But with the Orcs in the Horde, every time we set up a camp in the forest it's always completely laying waste to the area - cutting down every tree and pretty much destroying the natural habitat. I know it can be 'blamed' on goblins perhaps, but you'd think with the orcs wanting to get in touch with their shamanistic roots they wouldn't mow down so many trees.

So like, what's up with that? xD Is this just one of those 'horde has more people so we cut down triple the amount of trees' kind of thing?
I like to think the orcs' obsession with chopping down Ashenvale comes from a combination of genetic memory of their Breaker ancestors being programmed to fight the Evergrowth, and living on a world where forests would kill you.
The Horde on Azeroth are in a very different situation. They have a huge and highly centralized population sitting in the middle of a resource poor desert that had most of it's forest burned by Daelin.

Then they are under constant threat from the Alliance. Even during Vanilla they were fighting skirmish battles all over. In order to fight that war the Horde needs lumber. Lumber they do not have. So they need to go to Ashenvale for it.

Basically, the Azerothian Horde has a significantly higher need for lumber because of constant war and the fact they don't have an easy supply of it from their own territories, so when they do find it they strip the place down to the root as fast as possible.
Does the Horde have any plans of regrowing the forests that Daelin burned down? For that matter, forests burn down all the time from natural causes and still manage to grow back on their own. The Horde has Druids and Shamans that should be able to help with that process.

Yup, Orcs were literally created by a Titan and given 1 directive: Destroy Forest.

Of all Titan creations, they are the only one to stay faithfully on mission.

Amusingly the only druid trying to help the Horde with their lumber problem is a night elf named Naralex. He was trying to regrow the Barrens into a lush paradise, which would have given the Horde both a massive source of lumber and fertile land to grow crops, solving the food shortage.

Blizzard mostly ignores Horde druids and their existence though. If we were given a bigger role we could solve most of the Horde's resource problems without much trouble, which Blizzard doesn't want because it makes faction conflicts harder to write.

Isn't any wonder why orcs favor axes as melee weapons?
They didn’t start this war

nature did

So the Horde goes to war with the Night elves to get lumber, which means they need lumber to fight the Night elves?
What if they had never went to war with the Night elves?
What if the Nelfs just gave the Horde some wisps and told them to deposit all lumber into Org's treasury? Seems like a simple enough solution.

Pretty much this. Wouldn't it be more efficient to make homes from clay/dirt bricks or the few mountains in Durotar, kinda like the burrow in the starting area? Cut down on wood consumption whenever possible so you have less of a resource deficit and can use the wood where it's needed most?

If they had asked nicely instead of invading before Classic, I'm sure that would have been a possibility.

This is legitimately awesome headcanon.

I'd love it if that was eventually confirmed or hinted at by blizzard, but it's honestly believable enough as is.

Wrong, the Horde builds stuff out of spikes!

It's more the Horde needs lumber to build houses and for firewood during the cold nights and for cooking and the only wood available comes from Ashenvale, which the night elves viciously guard. So now the orcs need more wood to build weapons of war to fight the night elves for the wood they need to survive.

So to answer your question, they would have starved to death in the cold as the night elves sat in their trees watching.

Just like they sat in their trees watching as the centaur brutally attempted genocide against the tauren for centuries.
So all this time the Horde would have needed much less wood from Ashenvale if they didn't have to fight for it.
Can't our Druids just like.....make trees? I don't get why lumber has been such a concern in the horde lol.
I really wish they would go from "Deh lumber" to Ashenvale just being filled with a lot of untap, raw resources the Night Elves never bothered harvesting cause they had no need. Making the land practically a fortune for mineral and hunting goods.

Well, if we look at Naralex's work to regrow the Barrens, it seems like the Emerald Nightmare had been doing its best to keep the Barrens barren. Naralex eventually overcame that problem in Cata, but there hasn't been any updates on his progress. Blizz probably forgot that the Horde should now be able to dedicate Druids and Shamans to returning the Barrens to a lush forest.
