Throughout the discussions regarding Azerite Armor, there’s been a lot of talk about how you earn Azerite pieces from Mythic+ dungeons. Players have told us – and we agree – that the process of earning Azerite Armor through Mythic+ feels overly based on luck, and that there isn’t enough control in the players’ hands. Even with our bad luck protection systems in place, the sheer number of potential Azerite pieces you can get from the weekly chest means that trying to get ahold of a specific piece feels hopeless.

That’s a problem we want to solve, and give you some control over the Azerite gear you earn through Mythic+. So here’s what we’re working on for Tides of Vengeance:

First, we’re adding a new (as yet unnamed) currency, which you’ll earn from your weekly Mythic+ chest as well as from scrapping (or disenchanting) epic-quality Azerite Armor. This currency is rewarded in addition to the item in the chest (which can no longer be an Azerite piece), and the amount you earn will scale up based on the highest level Keystone you’ve completed. For example, completing a level 10 Keystone will reward you with about three times as much as clearing a level 7. Similarly, scrapping higher-item-level Azerite pieces will give you significantly higher amounts of this currency than lower-level pieces.

To spend that currency, we’re bringing back an old friend: Thaumaturge Vashreen. He’ll have two main types of items for sale. The first are caches that reward a random dungeon Azerite Armor piece for a given slot (helm, shoulders, or chest). They’ll be separated out by item level as well (at 355, 370, and 385), with higher item level caches requiring significantly more currency to purchase.

But we recognize that with six or more options per slot, this may still not be enough control for high-end players who want to be able to work towards a specific piece that perfectly complements their build. Thus, Vashreen will also offer Item Level 385 versions of the specific dungeon Azerite Armor pieces for each class, sold at a premium.

We’re still nailing down the exact numbers, but our goal for tuning this new currency is that you’ll be able to purchase one of the Azerite caches that lines up roughly with the item level of the gear you’re getting from your Mythic+ runs every two or three weeks, with the specific 385 pieces as long-term goals for top players.

Overall, we believe that this change will improve things in a lot of different ways:
  • Mythic+ players of all skill levels will now have a clear path to upgrading their Azerite slots
  • High-end Mythic+ players will have a way to target specific Azerite pieces to optimize their setups
  • Duplicate or unwanted Azerite pieces from other sources (such as raiding) now have some additional value
  • The piece of gear in your weekly chest will have a more reliable item level

You should see all of this hitting the Tides of Vengeance PTR sometime in the next week or so. We really do appreciate your feedback, and believe that this, in addition to the new traits and other improvements coming to the Azerite system in Tides of Vengeance, will help ease a lot of the concerns about Azerite Armor in Mythic+ and as a whole.

how about bad luck protection on weapons? still have an assassination rogue using a 300 ilevel dagger. 340+ weapon drops seems pretty meager

Check the AH, I bought a 325 dagger upon hitting 120 for a pretty reasonable cost.
Thank you! This sounds like a great change.

Can we get a better idea on how long it will ideally take to buy a specific 385 piece? I know it will differ based on the dungeons you do at specific difficulties, but I'd like an idea of how long it will take someone to target buy a piece.

I'm concerned it might take too long to buy a 385 set (all three pieces) that the content tier will be over before then. It's mentioned that it will take two to three weeks to buy a randomize cache and even longer to buy a specific piece. If the content patches are supposed to be similar to Legion (77 days) which I believe it's been said that that is the plan, I worry this time gate is way too long. I would imagine being able to buy a random cache at the rate of once per week is fine and target buying a 385 every two weeks would be more reasonable.

Hopefully the new ring of traits that will effectively give you three chances to get a certain trait on a piece is enough to cover the current holes (raid Azerite gear currently only has select traits, and some you can't find in raids at all). If they are able to fill your holes in traits, then maybe the time frame won't be too bad, I just worry it's going to take too long to target one piece.

And for players that don't do Mythic+? Nothing.

Most of the complaints have been coming from raiders who wanted more reliable ways of improving their gear beyond the max.

No one who is casual will be fooled by this into thinking the change will in any way benefit them. There is still no reason to buy BfA, or maybe even less reason than before.

Instead of improving world content to make it more fun, engaging, and rewarding, they're giving more stuff to raiders.
This addresses quite a few of my gripes with BFA actually.

If we kill Titanforging by next expansion once and for all and go back to expanding talent trees instead of making these ridiculous pvp talent pools I'll be a happy customer for a long time.

Good to see Lore communicating clearly and openly, this is exactly what the community needs.
Okay, this is epic.
Sorry - I read that wrong the first time.

You only get the currency for scrapping/DE'ing Azerite Gear?

I mean I guess that's better from a single player point of view...depending on how long it takes to farm the currency.

Doesn't this negate the change you made to trading azerite gear though? You've motivated people drastically to keep all the azerite gear they get rather than sharing it with other classes and specs that could use the upgrade or traits.

While you've given us something to work for - you've traded out a huge area where players had the ability to get their azerite pieces from.

That doesn't make any sense. Raiders have steady chances, per week, to get their Raid gear.

The problem, as the post states very simply, Mythic Plus players had very little chance or ability to target their azerite gear. This change addresses that.

Basically, this change is a good one that addresses many of those issues.
thank you. you should consider adding the currency to raids as well.

except I do raid but this expansion I'm not chasing the carrot by chasing every single BiS for the spec I play..

I still dislike the azerite system just because you can "target" some pieces (prob not because they might put another RNG box cuz reasons) I'm still not going to chase the carrot.. at the end of the day this is just a bandaid fix but most welcome for those that asked for it happy for them but not going to be my case since I dont really want to chase stats/rings/trinkets by doing keys this time around did plenty of that on legion nowdays I just raid and whatever I get I will play and be over with and don't get me started on alts..

Couple quick clarifications based on feedback so far:
  • Only Azerite Armor that drops after Tides of Vengeance is released will scrap/disenchant into the new currency. Don't worry about hoarding the Azerite pieces you're earning now.
  • When the next Mythic+ season starts, and item levels increase, the item levels of Thaumaturge Vashreen's wares will increase accordingly.
  • We recognize that PvPers want more options and choice too. We're talking about that separately.

That's cool and all and a great feedback to let your consumers know you're working on the problem. The only thing missing on the list is alpha worgen model comeback and new upgraded goblin models.
Thank you for being a company that listens to your audience. I'm sorry that you deal with this many "still salty, never satisfied" people who can't accept change. :)
Sounds like a step in the right direction but please don't forget about PvP in this fix as I mostly PvP with a little bit of PvE and grinding PvE just to keep up does not sound like fun to me.
We need the currency to drop from M+ end chests. Otherwise this is BS

HUGE, thank you so much for this, Can we additionally buy raid pieces with sanguiniecell? I have no idea what to do with this currency.

It would be nice to have a use for it. Some garbage currency for 3/8 crafting professions. Not even half in the game, wow cool. Add in the farming professions and you've got 3/10, not even 1/3 of the professions. Add in cooking and fishing for kicks and it's useful for 1/4 of the professions. Soulbound so you can't even sell the useless crap. I considered selling them for 1g apiece, but in the slim chance Blizzard realizes their mistake... I'm keeping them around for now.
Thanks Blizzard. Hearing the community more often helps a lot, and this show us how the players, and the devs can cooperate to improve the game.
I'd like to add that there are a few traits locked to wq/world boss loot only in specific slots, is there any chance these wq pieces will be included with this vendor?
Something to work towards again. Predictable progression. Thank you!

Now add some honor/conq vendors and you'll see my time played increase even more.
Hold up.

If it will take 2 or 3 weeks worth of grinding the new currency to get a random uncontrollable cache that is no different from the slot machine we're already playing, then are we looking at MONTHS worth of grinding for ONE targeted piece?
Overall this seems like a positive improvement to me, I guess we will have to see how it looks on the PTR, but certainly seems like they are moving in the right direction.

one thing to be careful of here is to make sure people dont feel that running low keys over and over is more worthwhile than pushing higher keys - dont want another Maw of Souls situation.

Also, I vote that the currency is called either Valor or Justice points. :)
