The word Agency

General Discussion
Just had to point out that the word agency went from hardly ever being used if at all, to the new cool word to have thrown into every post and statement. You tubers are using in almost every new video at least once. I find it hilarious how it kinda rose out of nowhere and now its everywhere. Thank-you Ion for bringing that word into all our vocabularies. I'm sure some feel smarter for using it now. Using in place of more common words that make better sense. To everyone, continue using agency as your agency sees fit.
I do believe that word came into heavy usage because of a post on reddit.
A very nice post that went into detail about the difference between choice and agency and what that means in WoW.

That is, truly, an excellent post. It really sums up what's been going wrong in WoW and how simple the fix would be.

Thank you for the link.

Point scored for the one who knows what a fattened underground storage stem is called.

A search for "agency", sorted by "latest" shows it's not really a hot word in GD.
Same with toxic but enjoy the toxic agency of wow

I remember that post. It's one of the most insightful on an aspect of the game's design made over the past several years. (along with Torvald's forum post in Warlords analyzing the issues with garrisons). It's right on the nose:

" ... the issues come down to control of our characters being taken away. More time standing around doing nothing. Less ability to combine things in ways that interest us. Less power to decide what our character looks like and does. More things that we worked for with a specific intention being made abruptly inacessable because of changes to the game that we have no way to anticipate or influence."

Amen.

You're hearing about it now because WoW has never totally lacked player agency before BfA.

I think they started down this path in Warlords. Class pruning was the first step along with removing flight.

You have that right.
That's how buzzwords are, yes. Someone will use it, often in a well articulated post, then sheep will just latch onto the word and incorrectly use it until it loses meaning.

Most people use it as an attempt to sound smart because "Well, that one guy made a great post and used it. Surely, it will make me sound smart too.".
It's been a staple in table-top RPG circles for years now. Personally, the word makes me cringe. It makes me think of "hippie" RPGs.

Player agency has always been a term used to talk about game mechanics. Read up on some game design blog and they will talk about when and when not to give players agency.
It became a buzzword before the reddit post and is a socio-political buzzword that has since become the new "synergy". It definitely has its legitimate uses but like many other words and concepts it's been taken for relatively banal things much like using Thomas Jefferson quotes to justify the right to harrass people.
Ultimate player agency would be if Blizzard introduced perma-death. Make the wrong choice and lose your character forever.
I mean, I always wanted Azeroth to be a whole world, not just themepark rails.

Look at Red Dead 4 right now, the open-world concept is a GOOD concept.

WOW look how fragile you are complaining about words. Probably goes right over you small head lel. Intellectuals just have bigger sets of vocabulary, get used to it.
