What does "Proc" mean?

General Discussion
I was always confused on what this meant.
Process. it dates back to the very old text-only Multi-User-Dungeons (MUDs). It's any event that happens in the process of something else; ex, a fiery weapon enchant has a chance to hit the bad guy with fire while you are attacking. It's commonly mis-labeled as "percent rate of chance." This is a lie. Don't believe it.
That is odd i thought it meant "Programmed Random Occurrence"
Paladins Rely On Chance.

Oh wait, that's mostly fixed now. My bad :)

I was under the impression that the actual origin of "proc" was short for "procedure" not "process." Ie, a weapon has a chance to perform a "special procedure" which was eventually shortened down to "proc".

It does in WoW terms.

Another misconception. You can actually track it's first usage back and see that it was originally process. A lot of the old MUDs are still running after all, since it takes so few resources to host one.
