Launcher won't initialize

Technical Support
As the title states. Last night was fine. Go to log in this morning and the launcher won't initialize. task manager says "not responding."

I have already restarted my comp twice, and nothing (not that that would fix it, but normally when something isn't working that does the trick).

Was there an update or patch I'm not aware of, and if not does anyone have any suggestions?
Nadered,

No new patches have been released since last night.

I'd like to get some more information. Are you using Windows XP, Vista or 7? What security programs are you using on your system? Is the launcher giving you an error message when this occurs?

Check your G-diffuser system!
OS - Vista (bleh), with latest updates
Security - avast! antivirus

Not getting any error messages. It just gets hung up trying to initialize. When I go to the task manager it tells me the launcher is "not responding"
Nadered,

I've had reports of Avast doing things like this. Lets uninstall it temporarily and see if the game will load. Please make sure not to go out on the internet or anything risky without security active on your system. We only want to remove it for this test.

That seems to have done it. I just need to reinstall the av now. Still having some issues tho...taking forever to load up the news, and I can't do anything until it loads.

Maybe unrelated, but I'm also having a lot of issues on this website today too. Just trying to get to the forums is a hassle.
Nadered,

We had some website maintenance for around 3 hours today. That would account for your issues there.

Now that we've isolated the issue, we'll want to get security back on the system. You may need to contact Avast for instructions on how to create program exceptions for their software if you wish to continue using it.

Other security programs may also be an option if you are so inclined:
Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Kaspersky: http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/trial-versions.php

Well I reinstalled my AV, but still can't get the launcher to work. I can, however, open the game withOUT the launcher.

Added the entire WoW folder to the exceptions list and still wouldn't open. I can't figure it out. I find it kind of odd that this just happened all of a sudden overnight.

Nadered,

When adding exceptions in your AV program, are you including the launcher.exe as well as the wow.exe program? Both would need to be allowed for WoW to function properly.

That didn't work either. Guess I'll just not use the launcher until I can figure it out
Nadered,

I don't recommend that. The launcher includes many safety features as well as patching tools. Bypassing it can cause other problems when running the game.

I highly recommend contacting Avast for help with their program or using different security software.

I am having this same issue. It worked fine last night. I didn't even shut down my computer after playing, just put it to sleep so system settings are DEFINITELY the same. Today the launcher won't initialize. I use AVG AV which is already set up with WoW as an allowed program. When I close launcher the window disappears but remains in "Processes" in Windows Task Manager and I have to kill it there before giving it another try. I have also tried WoW repair tool without any effect.
Exact same thing goin on here Wrong.

I have now uninstalled and installed 2 different AV programs. I was even on the phone with support for Avast and they couldn't help...said it was the game. The one I have installed atm is the Microsoft Security.....still not working.

Apparently I'm going to have to sit on the phone with Blizz after work tomorrow. Awesome
So, was on the phone with Blizz for around 2 hours today to try and fix this and they are stumped. If anyone else has this issue I'm still waiting for a reply to some info I sent them.

Still can't get in using the launcher.
Nadered,

You stated previously that when you uninstalled Avast you were able to use the launcher without issue. Is this still correct?

These further issues with the launcher have only developed after reinstalling Avast? Or are other AV programs involved now?

i too have this problem. it first started out as me clicking on Play button, but it wouldnt start up, so i reinstalled it. after i got the updates, it let me play for a little bit, then when i tried to log back on later, the launcher won't initialize. i use McAfee SecurityScan Plus, and all this has happened within the last five days.
I too have just started experiencing this problem in the past week. I logged out of the game and literally logged back in within 5-10 minutes and the launcher is stuck on "Initializing Please Wait" with the play button grayed out.

Running XP currently with full updates (yes, I know old...) and AVG Internet Security running. Have had this set up for a year with NO problems until recently. Seems the latest hotfix to hit is when this started, as that is about the time frame I started noticing it.

I have to reboot the system in order for the Launcher to work properly so I'm wondering if a service or file is not terminating itself completely somewhere (locally or server side) when we log off and acts as though it's not syncing with the update servers....

Just a thought.
Just to add an update to my above post. The behavior is very similar to other issues I've seen with other programs where the network connection seems to be "stalled" despite being connected.

I tested this by disabling my network connection (Right click on My Network Places -> Properties and disabling my network controller). Wanted about a minute and then re-enabled. Once it reconnected (got an IP address and re-established internet connection) I opened up the WoW Launcher and presto... it worked properly.

Leads me to believe a network protocol on the client side may not always be terminating on exit and as such, a locked persistent connection may still exist blocking the launcher from re-connecting again unless the network controller (nic card) is essentially reset; either by reboot or by disabling it and re-enabling it. May be off base but a thought...
I have the same isue. I am running Windows 7 with Kaspersky Anti Virus. Any help would be good.
I had the same problem. Downloader would stall when initializing. Running XP with Norton. Renewed my IP address, and all is good.
