Ideas to populate the world

General Discussion
This thread is for ideas about increasing world population, not the merits of Have Group Will Travel (HGWT).

If you have an idea that Blizzard can implement that will encourage you to get out into the world, i.e.- actual solutions to world bloat and empty zones, please post them here.

TLDR:The point is, if Blizzard doesn't have the resources to create new content, let's be creative in getting people to visit existing content for new reasons. Let's show these developers that the answer to empty zones is not removing perks that get people into empty zones!

Thanks to milcondoin, an EU player posting on MMO Champion for the following, which I use as the basis for this thread:

The relevant transcript:

Curse - Are you happy with how guild perks worked in Cataclysm? Can you give us an example of what new content guilds should expect? New perks? Is the level cap going to be increased?

Tom Chilton - We are happy with some of them, but others of them went too far in some ways or were just not cool enough in other ways. My overall view of it is somewhat mixed. We do expect to introduce some new perks, even if it is just to swap out some of the ones we feel didn't work out as well. The Have Group, Will Travel was popular because it is one more thing that shrinks the world and allows players to avoid being out in the world. We are trying to put more of an emphasis on players going out into the world to do stuff, so that is one of the ones that we are going to replace with something else.

By the look on his face you can tell he's wary of the fallout of the change, and rightly so.

Here's the thing. Read this thread http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/5235705380?page=1 for the discussion of why the above reasoning is flawed.

Now that that's clear, let's give Blizzard some fan-inspired ideas as to how to get us out into the world, their stated goal, so they don't make the mistake of removing HGWT.

HINT: Try to utilize existing assets. The less Blizzard has to create from scratch the more likely it will be implemented.

How to increase exploration and world presence:

  • NEW! Allow people to use LFG chat to LFG when out in the world. As soon as you leave a city you you can't LFG. Talk about keeping people shut in!
  • Expedition tours, where you're escorted by an NPC that narrates history/lore/triva along the way. This can be done via existing escort quest technology. Find a tour guide in a town, start the tour. Don't abandon or afk, the tour will be attacked along the way to ensure attendance. EVERY zone has lore and items/areas of interest that most everyone would love insight on. Imagine the increase in the depth of lore knowledge and trivia! Tour achievement.

Bonus! Blizzard doesn't have to wait until every zone has a tour. Simply patch each zone as it's done and announce it via a town crier in Capitals. Say one a month. That way it rolls out over time, keeps people interested, etc.
  • Make sure players have explored the area before allowing HGWT to bring them there. Use existing exploration record.
  • Unique-equipped epic or rep-grind daily quest chains that send you to different targeted zones each day
  • Safaris where you bag game in random combinations around the world for rep, etc. Every zone has unique creatures. Low level? Safaris are dangerous! Beware! But if I can run a level 1 across the world, so can you.

    Variation: Three levels, three rewards?:
Photo Safari : Just target it. For the casual safari-goer.
Research Safari: Dart it, it aggros on you but slows down and sleeps (death animation, then revive so it goes back to it's area). You have to get away before it reaches you.
Trophy Safari: Slay the beast, for advanced hunters.
  • Crafting apprenticeships where you visit world npc crafters over time and train up meta recipies.
  • Gatherers; Make gather-only dailies over different zones for meta recipes that use both low and high ore, herbs or skins.
  • World-wide Ram races: (Thanks to Erin, for the ram idea! Love you!) Daily(like Darkmoon's arena) or weekly races around rotating zone(s) for rewards a la fishing tournaments. Utilizing the Brewfest Ram racing technology script races around a zone. Use barrels to restrict the route.

Alternatively use goblin trikes that take less skill. Or camel races in Tanaris. It has to be like a vehicle to prevent race or profession speed buffs. Use check points like Cannon Ball Run (existing Ram Race daily tech). No set route means players determine their own fastest route. This can be within one zone, or an entire continent, tip to tip.
  • Make at least one BIS gear piece/recipe a meta reward for exploration events above. Talk about getting max level players out in the world!

So you get the idea. Make sure your idea is:
  • Easy on Blizz development resources. Try and recycle existing game assets. HINT: The less Blizzard has to create from scratch the more likely it will be implemented.
  • Accessible to all levels.
  • Something people will want to do

To reiterate, if Blizzard doesn't have the resources to create new content, let's be creative in getting people to visit existing content for new reasons. Let's show these developers that the answer to empty zones is not removing perks that get people into empty zones!
There is no reason any or all of those ideas (which I admitted did not bother reading) cannot be implemented in addition to the removal of HGWT. If you want to make yet another complaint thread about HGWT, do it in an honest manner. Don't try to pass it off as "ideas to populate the world."

And yet that's what it is.

Gawd no. I'm remembering that horrid tour quest in Shattrath. 8 1/2 minutes of Awful. RP walking around after Khadgar's servant. Ick.

If Blizzard doesn't have the resources to create new content with all their hugely massively successful blowing out all the competition MMO dollars then they are doing something very, very wrong. That or they are just milking the players.

The trick here is that the tours are voluntary, for people interested in them. It's up to Blizzard to create compelling tour scripts and pace them well. You can't please all the people, you can only give options.
I like how, if you read carefully, that they're "replacing" it with something else, not "removing" it...

Do they teach reading skills anymore?

They do. They also teach critical thinking skills that help you to discern the difference between removing HGWT and replacing it with speeding up fixed flight points. The two are worlds apart.

Oh no, you have to take a taxi! Sorry your majesty shall I rub your feet too?

I use that time to get up, stretch, get a snack, do something constructive so I don't feel like I wasted my time with WoW...

It's good to get up from the chair every once in a while.

So you're saying removing HGWT under the guise that it will get people into the world will make you afk more. Nice.

Do you have any suggestions for the thread, or are you trolling? This isn't about debating the merits of HGWT, if you read the first line of the post.

I listed several ideas there in that thread that everyone who has posted agrees with. Its worth a look. Add a reply and agree to get more people to see it if you like them.
I honestly wouldn't mind seeing hgwt go away if summoning stones are not phased like they did with ICC. Also, let's not have another Naxx where people are filling the summoning area with mommoths and drakes. Keep it or loose it hgwt will not have any effect on getting people out into the world unless traveling straight to an instance is considered getting people out there.

I have put this idea out there already but here it goes again. Bring back buffs which were removed for WOTLK. Said buffs would force people to go out and farm but it doesn't have to be a severe grind. It just has to be something to get us out there. These buffs would possibly include:

1. Enchanter oils but with a shorter cd so they have to be applied more often
2. Remove the once per battle cd from all potions except mana and health potions
3. Sharpening stones and shield wards again a shorter cd so they have to be applied more often
4. Raid/challenge mode specific elixers gained through daily quests, these would be useful exclusive with other buffs
5 Make scroll buffs exclusive to other buffs
6. give every othercrafting profession some sort of temporary buff they can create and sell; ie small statues for jewelcrafters, gun buffs for engineers...
I don't see where they get the idea that it shrinks the world. People only use it in raids and only because 80% of people are too lazy to press autopilot on their mounts for ten minutes.
Guys stop bashing him, I was going to be like you and ignore everything he said but he brings up some REALLY good ideas. I love the idea of the safari, and I would definitely be inclined to go out and race rams instead of flying in circles around Org.

This isn't as much a post about remove HGWT as much as it is a post about getting people out of the "queue lobbies" of Org and SW.

Take time to read his post, its worth it.

Upvoted and requested sticky.

Thanks, Revelry. That's very kind of you.

Good stuff. Thanks!
I think it would be a great benefit if we could get people out and about the world more often.

I was out farming mageweave the other day to start finally leveling my tailoring, and it was just completely Empty. In 2 hours I didn't run into a single other player in Tanaris. That was just kind of sad.

No. Writing just isn't needed as much these days.
