Not really, the fact that they're balanced is due to game mechanics. If it weren't for game mechanics then death knights would have all the powers of warriors but with the power of runes and death magic on their sides. All in all, that's pretty much a mage, a warlock, and a warrior fighting against another warrior. Ordinarily they should be able to kill anyone in their paths but as you know game mechanics cause such a big effect on the world of lore that such a thing is not even possible.

No you're thinking of it all wrong. Death Knights are superior classes and if not for game mechanics they should be slightly less powerful than a warrior, a mage, and a warlock fighting alongside one another. What happens is that when the warrior dies, the Scourge imbue him with the powers of death and runic magic as well. This means that they have all powers of a death knight, a necromancer, and a runemaster all in one. They can fight as a warrior as they used to be, but now they can be much more than that. They imbue their attacks with death itself and bring down its opponents faster than they ever could. The mere fact that they're balanced is due to Blizzard's feeble attempt at making them balanced for gameplay reasons. If this were in the field of lore, then death knights would be able to kill any warriors coming at them, regardless of their experience.
