WoW Setup "Updating Blizzard Launcher"

Mac Technical Support
I know this has been posted in a few other places, but from the threads I've followed here there haven't been any solid conclusions.

The error: I click on "World of Warcraft" in my applications. "World of Warcraft Launcher" opens automatically and starts "World of Warcraft Setup". This setup gets stuck about 2/3rds through the loading bar under "Updating Blizzard Launcher" and doesn't move.

Things I've tried:

Deleting my antivirus software in my Activity Monitor.
Deleting the Battle.net folder in my /shared/ directory.
Deleting the WTF and Cache folders in my World of Warcraft directory.

This same error persists.

Something to note: I'm unable to empty my trash with the Battle.net folder in there because it claims Agent and some related files are still in use. In my Activity Monitor I have to force quit the "Agent" process, and even after doing so still cannot empty my trash without restarting my computer.
Something else I've noticed: Each time I try doing a full reset (delete Battle.net folder, WTF folder, cache folder, restart computer, cancel antivirus software, start WoW) the setup initially gets stuck around 1/3rd through "Updating Blizzard Launcher". If I then quit the setup program and reopen it, it immediately jumps to the 2/3rds mark and stays there. Quitting/reopening a third time does nothing new.
Can you go into the /Users/Shared/Battle.net/Agent folder and tell me what versions of Agent are listed (Like Agent.1675, etc)

It seems to be trying to update Agent or the Blizzard Launcher.
There are two folders in there - one is "Agent.1040" and the other is "Agent.1675"

*Edit: Also when I delete my "Battle.net" folder and relaunch WoW only Agent.1040 reappeared, not Agent.1675
Update: I downloaded an updated "SetupOSX.mpq" and "WoW.tfil" online, deleted my Battle.net folder, and restarted WoW.

The Updating Blizzard Launcher now finishes and the launcher opens (Woo!) but appears to be perpetually stuck at "Total download remaining: 13.9 MB"
http://dist.blizzard.com.edgesuite.net/wow-pod-retail/NA/15890.direct/Updates/wow-0-16716-OSX-final.MPQ

Download this via a Download manager.

Make sure it is named .MPQ and does not have any other extension (EG .MPQ.txt)

Delete the Updates folder and Restart.

Once restarted make a new folder in the wow folder called "Updates"

Put the MPQ file you downloaded in that folder.

Start up from the Launcher.

Sorry if it's a silly question but what is a "Download Manager" - do I need a separate program just to download what is on this link?

If I copy the link into my browser it looks like it's trying to display the code of the file.
If it's displaying the code of the file it's just displaying it instead of downloading it.

This is the default for most browsers. A download manager is a separate program designed to download files.

The issue is if if you go to save it in a browser that's just displaying it instead of downloading it you may inadvertedly add a .txt extension on the end. It's ok to download it via a browser just make sure it doesn't have a .txt extension on the end. Only a .MPQ extension.

You could also download it via the terminal :

cd ~/Desktop

curl -#O "http://dist.blizzard.com.edgesuite.net/wow-pod-retail/NA/15890.direct/Updates/wow-0-16716-OSX-final.MPQ"

Last command is all one command. Copy it all in one line and paste it to the terminal in one line (IE copy the curl all the one to the end of the 2nd line)

I was able to download it through Chrome - I guess Safari's default option was to display it, whereas Chrome knew to download it.

Using the steps you listed resolved my issue - thanks very much!

I'm glad it's working, though I hope I won't always need to download a file like this separately every time the game requires an update.
How'd it go with the new bug fix patch that just come up Andaer ?

*Sigh*

Same problem again... stuck at "Total download remaining: 13.9 MB". I assume I need to wait for this patch to be uploaded somewhere so I can download it and install it separately again?

I see a lot of other people posting about patching issues - but before any of them are being fixed a constant slew of patches has been happening since 5.2. It's really frustrating to go through this process every few days!

Same deal again.

I'm not home right now so I can't try the fix BSC mentions. I get the same thing as Andaer (Updating blizzard launcher at 2/3rds). after a reboot, everything goes well.

Worked perfectly again, thanks again for the (hopefully) temporary solution Bluespacecow.

If it happens again and I'm not around , attempt to find out the build number of the new updates file. Or the file name of the new Updates folder file.

The download URLs Blizzard uses are fairly predictable.

If you can figure out the new build number of the new patch you can reasonably figure out the filename and hence the URL to download the new patch file.

Let me break it down for you.

http://dist.blizzard.com.edgesuite.net/wow-pod-retail/NA/15890.direct# Patch base URL (at least until they get a new one)

/Updates # this means it goes in the Updates folder

wow-0-16733-OSX-final.MPQ # final name of the Updates folder based update file.

Underlined is the build number

Ergo if the build number is a new one then you can just change the build number to the new build number , getting a new URL to download from.

EG if the new build number is 99789 then your new URL would be :

http://dist.blizzard.com.edgesuite.net/wow-pod-retail/NA/15890.direct/Updates/wow-0-99789-OSX-final.MPQ
You can find the new build number out by looking at recent posts in the tech support forums that talk about MPQ files that appear to be corrupt with a path to the Updates folder. You need to be looking at recent posts only as it's a fairly common error message that can show up after a patch.

EG

OS X rough example :

/Applications/World of Warcraft/Updates/wow-0-16733-Win-final.MPQ appears to be corrupt

Windows example :

"C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\Updates\wow-0-16733-Win-final.MPQ" apears to be corrupt"

Windows will be slightly different - they have "-Win-final.MPQ" at the end. So need to change the to -OSX-final.mpq

In the two examples above the file name is "wow-0-16733-Win-final.MPQ" , build number 16733 so the download link would be :

http://ak.worldofwarcraft.com.edgesuite.net/wow-pod-retail/NA/15890.direct/Updates/wow-0-16733-OSX-final.MPQ

But again. You need to be looking at the freshest posts in terms of when they were posted.

The new build number should be a higher number then anything currently in your Updates folder. So if you find a post but the build number is lower then what you have in your Updates folder it's not a new build.
so i gotta be a computer science major to play wow now it seems, this sucks, having same problem as Andaer but didn't understand anything else and so it still stops for me at 2/3 updating.... /sigh
2 New builds up today.

Andaer , you know what to do.
im sort of having the same problem.

This is the default for most browsers. A download manager is a separate program designed to download files.

There's a way around this in Safari. If you copy the URL you posted into the URL bar in Safari and hold Option down while hitting Enter, it will download the file directly via the download manager built into Safari.

Found this out last night during my troubleshooting of this very issue when running Diablo 3 (or SC2 or WoW in my case).

Just a nice tip for you Bluspacecow.

Now back to my search for the bloody cause of the constant launcher updates...
