Upon conception.

Hunters get strong early on because they get their kiting kit quickly.
Do your home work and make lots of bad choices , die , grow some thick skin, learn from your mistakes and if you make it through that you have a chance. Its kind of like being a tank , but no one cares if you live or die till they need you.
how do I change my pets spec? It's at tenacity now

Bring up your Spec, on the lower part of that window it will say Pet. Click on that and then click on the spec you want it to be, the click on the "Learn" Button. This can not be done in combat.

Okies are not great spellers :(

Haven't re leveled a hunter recently so take this with a grain of salt but IRC you should have access to your pet spec tree on the same level you get access to your talent tree. Your pet's spec tree is on one of the extra tabs of your spec/talent bar.
I'd also put growl on your pet bar, it makes it easier to turn off and on when going in and out of dungeons and you can hit the button to get something off you or the healer.

I am going to add this to my thread. Thank you for the question.
to play a hunter:

hit shiny buttons

that's about all it takes for anyone to do well these days
This is my new hunter I started to just enjoy the 1-90 leveling changes. From early on (in full BoA) I was able to solo 99% of the dungeon content for my level (some pulls in DM are an exception) if you plan to try it BM with a turtle or scarab in tenacity spec will help a lot.
