Still broken
Still looking for a fix here..
I'm getting a message saying " An unexpected error occurred while updating required files. please try again. " I wait at the launcher for 20 minutes for this message.

Hmm..

Have you checked your agent.db file for patch server entries as well ?

Have you tried restarting to get rid of any agent.exe processes that could be hang ?
I've restarted. And I don't know where the agent.db file is. I got windows 7
I don't what happened, opened the launcher and its now working. Im sure it was a fix on blizz's side, thank you.
Edit: fixed my issue by having the SET installLocale "enUS" line immediatly below the SET Locale "enUS" line

This specific placement worked for me.

I was having the same issue where I'd get the message that the patch needed to be installed. Once, I was able to get on, but only to view the realm list in red.

Thankfully, this worked xD
I have tried all of the file editing fixes listed. Putting the patchlist line in my config allowed the game to actually launch, but once I log in it tells me a patch is required and that I need to restart. When I click restart, it tells me the patch failed. Here are some screen shots.

***I ran the repair tool again just now, and I was able to log in to the game.

I am getting this exact issue

I am getting this exact issue

Have you tried running the repair tool?
I am also having this same error message about patching failed, after trying to run as administrator.

Not yet- Does the repair tool erase all my settings? I don't really feel like setting up weakauras, DBM, action bars, etc....
I have tried everything you suggested in this thread! I am still getting the "Updating blizzard laucher..." and it refuses to finish that it has been like this for 2 days now and I am paying you for a service I cant access. It's clearly nothing we've all done so fix it please!!

Nope, it does not. It just checks files for issues.
How do i access the repair tool with out getting past the updating launcher?

Try "C:\ProgramData\Battle.net"

should under patch_url IIRC
I've been having the same problems as everyone else. I'm able to open the game, log in, immediately told my game is out of date, then told its failed to patch and to restart. I run launcher after this, and that gets stuck at about 60-70%.

Kicker for me is, I downloaded 5.3 just fine about 6-7 hours ago and was playing without a hitch. Now this happens. I've deleted the WTF/Update/Cache folders (step by step process), made sure my AV software is OFF (I don't even have any presently) as well as my firewall being more open than a medieval brothel. No change, still looping on launcher and failing to update after log in.

I have, however, an older version of the game (4.2) installed on an external hard-drive and I'm able to get the launcher to run on that. So I've transferred it over and seeing if I can't at least get the game running again. Of course, it'll take several hours to configure and re-download Mists (sigh), but nothing has worked for me since Blizz did some type of mini patch in my 6-7 hour hiatus. I'm just crossing my fingers this half-!@#$ method of mine might work so I can play tomorrow.
I fixed my issue by making sure no wow.exe or wow-64.exe were running in Task Manager (Processes Tab), then going to the Updates folder, moving all files out of that onto desktop, starting launcher, it made the appearance of downloading a patch, and then it worked as normal. Logged into game.

This worked perfectly for me.
Reposting this here, in case it might help someone:

Disable Proxy Settings and Dial-up Connections

Press Windows Key + R.
Type inetcpl.cpl into the Run window.
Click OK.
Click the Connections tab.
Select Never dial a connection.
Click LAN settings.
Uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN.
If Use a proxy server for your LAN is already unchecked, try to toggle Automatically detect settings. If it is checked, uncheck it. If it is not checked, check it.
Click OK.

Check for Offline Mode in Internet Explorer

Open Internet Explorer.
Press Alt + F.
Uncheck Work Offline.

This fixed whatever the problem was. Thank you!

The question is though, why do you have to even open IE to fix WoW launcher?
thank you Laetitia for doing what Blizzard could not! I have been fighting with them for 2 days to get this working. Thanks again for saving me for flipping desks :)
