Don't install BC or Wrath if you're at 4.x

Hey,

I'm coming back to the game. Last weekend, I reinstalled classic and BC after the 4.03.13329 wouldn't load the game. It got me to the Cataclysm in game login. I just tried installing the discs for Lich King but discovered this problem about overwriting files.

I went to my account and typed in the authentication key for Lich King and then redeemed my prepaid game card. I logged into the game but it was still BC. I reloaded the launcher, and it's downloading 4.1 gigs, right now.

(1) Will this download enable me to play Lich King?
(2) Did I spend 40 dollars just to buy the authentication key today?
(3) Do I install Cataclysm's discs to do the next upgrade?

Thanks
ok do u have a mac link to reinstall wow cause im getting the error message wow cannot be found can u plz help i installed the original world of warcraft and i need help getting cata back on my computer??
Well I downloaded a 14-day trial out of a Warcraft 3 Battlechest and decided the previously hated game WoW was worth popping in the disk-tray out of boredom. Well one thing led to another and now I have decided WoW isn't horrible. I went out and bought the Battlechest and still using the trial-version upgraded my account. I put in the game disk and downloaded the Burning Crusade, but right at 75% I get an error message saying:

"Sorry, the installation failed.
The file "C:\World of Warcraft\Data\common-2.MPQ" could not be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (OpenArchive::Execute)"

My disk is perfectly clean, no spots, scratches or dust. Not sure how to get around this, I have tried it several times and the same error occurs. Maybe I should re-install the game? My only concern with having to do this is downloading the patches again... the god awful patches. Took me 2 days of downloading to get those suckers done. If I uninstall do the patches remain?

-From my thread. What do you recommend I do? Just uninstall the trial version of game, then install both games before it starts patching? Oh god please tell me I don't have to go through that patching again...
I recently came back to WOW following the expansion of Cataclysm and I have had an issue upgrading to the BC. The BC disc is a borrowed one off my friend who used to play on his character.I had not have previously installed the BC on my computer or had it at all on my character (well not the full version anyway). The version of BC I have tried to activate online said that the keygen had already been used once which would make sense. But at the moment I am stuck on the old version, stuck leveling and cannot install from disc or online. Where can i go from here?
Recently bought Cataclysm, and installed it having already had Wrath for at least a month or so.

I'm wondering if the problem I have is this one before I go any further with trying to fix it.

Currently, I am able to login. After I select my account, Success appears for a while before going to the realm screen. Once there, I can select a realm, and it will say Logging Into Game Server. After about 20 seconds or so, the Logging Into Game Server goes away, and it acts like I never selected anything.

Would this issue cause the problem I described?
Let me see if I'm understanding this correctly...

I just had a new hard drive installed, and assuming that I've upgraded my account to Cata, all I need to do is install the base game and Cata?
So i uninstall every files in my computer and my account has been upgraded.
Can i Upgrade my game to BC? i redownload the game from online already.
Lemme get this straight:

As of patch 4.0.3(correct?) BC and WOTLK are always installed, all you need to do is install Cata? I am updgraded all the way to Cata, so do I have BC and WOTLK installed already? Thanks! :)
So I just purchased the discs for Litch King today and am unable to update my account witht hat or Catacalysm. How do I upgrade the account so I can play a goblin?

and it didnt work. what can i do to get wow upgraded to BC?
im using windows 7 on my computer. will that cause any problems
This information would have been nice to have THREE DAYS AGO!!!
I get an E- Mail from Blizzard asking if I would like to try a free 10 day trial of The Lich King. Since I had made level 70 and wanted more I said sure, why not. Now I can't get the game to play. Yes I have uninstalled and re-installed, did exactly what Blizzard reccommended to do for my computer and the problem still exists. On top of this, I have pre-paid for 2 mos. and I have no idea when this will get solved. If the problem does not get resolved then I'll have no chioce but to throw away this game and wait till Diablo III comes out. That would suck very bad since I just love playing this game. Azarra

Okay if you have INSTALLED THE GAME via the streaming downloader you just input your new key to into the Battle.Net account management website. End of story. Do not screw with the disks. The content is ALREADY ON YOUR MACHINE.

I've got a slightly complex story which I'll tl;dr first:

Had a trial account a while back, bought vanilla and TBC today, installed from the disks, want to play. But the installer won't let me play until my game is updated to 4.0.~, and I don't want to download 8GB.

So, yeah. I had a trial previously (decided to try as much noob as possible, with a nelf rogue) and liked it, so I've decided to start playing. Went out and bought the Battlechest today, came home, installed the game from the two supplied disks and registered them both on my Battle.net account. When I started the launcher, it demanded that I download another 8GB of updates. I don't own WotLK or Cataclysm, and therefore won't need the masses of data that those two have brought in, I just want to play in my little TBC world until I'm confident and interested enough to step out into another expansion. The launcher hasn't even given me the option to sign in and prove that I don't need these files. Some will be necessary, of course, engine updates and whatnot, but... Downloading 8GB, if necessary, will take me quite a while to figure out a way of doing (capped 'net, and I definitely can't do that until at least the 4th).

Any ideas? Is there something obvious I've missed, or am I just going to have to suffer?

The Battlechest probably overwrote your trial so you don't have any choice but to do the standard install that only has World of Warcraft and Burning Crusade (that large download you're mentioning). If Lich King and Cataclysm were included, you'd see it at the ~14 GB number.

Okay, so to install the game, only put in your most recent game disc

Well, this just saved me hours of downloading, since I originally tried to re-install the game from my battle chest BC version. Thanks for that =)
So far, NOBODY has commented on my particular problem. The game was working fine until Blizzard's latest patches and updates.

I do not have Cataclysm expansion. I DO have Wrath of the Lich King.

-- I'm using a PC with Windows XP Home Editon, Service Pack 2. All latest MS updates.

-- I use AVG Internet Security program and it is up-to-date, and there are NO viruses or malware on my system.

-- All PORTS are properly assigned in my AVG Internet Security program.

-- I use AT&T's "2-Wire" Router/Modem, and all required Blizzard and Battlenet PORTS ARE CONFIGURED according to Blizzard's specs.

The game says that "The game is ready to play!" (Patch completed, but something went really wrong, and it appears to me that the patch-process screwed everything up).

Here's what happens each time I start the game:

-- I dbl-click the icon from my Start Menu to boot the game.

-- After approx 10secs, AVG throws up a screen notifying me that Blizzard has requested a port to be opened. I click "Enable ALL" and I also click "Remember this setting." But, I get the same request every time I start the game.

-- Once the game begins to load WoW, I get a large, gray-colored rectangular display box that informs me the it is "...configuring setup files" (or, something to that effect.). It has a horizontal progress bar that takes approximately 2mins to finish.

-- Then, the actual, initial game screen begins to load. It's the screen reddish-colored screen with the large red dragon and flames, etc.

-- That screen loading process takes 5 to 8 minutes to complete!

-- Then, I finally get to the CHAR LOGIN SCREEN.

-- After selecting a char, then I get still another horizontal bar, which takes another full minute to load the game itself.

Total time from start to finish loading the game is approx 8 to 12 minutes. That is an eternity! And, with frequent Error #132's (approx every 15min's), I have to endure this entire process repeatedly.

Finally, my question:

Can I uninstall/delete "everything" related to Wow, and expect to get a proper install of the game by spending another 3 days to download and install the latest patch? Yes... it DOES take 3 days (24hrs per day) to install the patch! My ISP DL speed is 2.5MB's to 2.7MB's per second. Blizzard's downloader delivers data at only 60KB to 150KB per second!!!

I, and everybody else who has written here) would benefit greatly if Blizzard would post a step-by-step procedure (in easy to understand english) on how to configure and re-install and active account. If at all possible, NO EMBEDDED LINKS to go read something somewhere else. The procedure should be complete within itself.

I just ininstalled the whole game. Deleted the Folder...Re installed WOW/BC did not run the Patch downloader...tried to install Wrath.
STILL
can not get it to go past 74%.
Cannot find file "C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft\Data\common-2.MPQ"
is the error i get.
WTF.
it stresses me out i payd 40 dollars for this and it wont download.
on top of that...i have to download the patch AGAIN!! if i want to play...
