Failed to read a required file. Please close all other applications, temporarily deactivate your antivirus software, and try again.

The Blizzard Update Agent could not read a necessary file in order to run or update the game. This may happen when a file or folder is locked or in use by another program, or when the necessary file has permissions errors, file damage, or corruption.

Windows

  1. Run the repair tool to resolve issues with damaged game files.
  2. Security software may interfere with the Update Agent. Disable or temporarily uninstall any security programs.
  3. Our games require administrator privileges to install, update, and run properly. Be sure to run the game in Administrator Mode.
  4. Programs running in the background can conflict with the Update Agent. Try closing background applications.
  5. The file being read may be corrupt.  Run check disk and defragment your hard drive to try to repair any bad sectors.
  6. If these steps fail, uninstall your current copy of the game (World of Warcraft) (StarCraft II) (Diablo III) (Hearthstone) and download a new installer from the Battle.net Game Downloads page.

Mac

  1. Game folder permissions may be incorrect. Reset game folder & file permissions to resolve any permission conflicts.
  2. Programs running in the background can conflict with the Update Agent. Try closing background applications.
  3. The folder may be saved on a corrupt hard drive sector. Run the Repair Disk utility to resolve hard drive issues.
  4. Deleting the Battle.net Tools folder, which contains Agent data, can resolve this issue by forcing Agent to automatically create it again when it restarts.
  5. If these steps fail, uninstall your current copy of the game (World of Warcraft) (StarCraft II) (Diablo III) (Hearthstone) and download a new installer from the Battle.net Game Downloads page.
