Troubleshooting Video Issues in Classic Games

Keywords:

You may experience various video problems when running our classic titles (Warcraft® II, Warcraft III, Diablo®, Diablo II, or StarCraft®) on modern hardware and operating systems. Some of the more common issues and troubleshooting steps are listed below.

My game does not display in full screen

You may have a problem with a loaded extension. Try using a minimal extensions set in the Extensions Manager.

Note: Fixed resolution monitors, which do not resize low-resolution programs, cannot run classic games in full screen mode.

There is a black border around my game

  1. Be sure that your video drivers are up-to-date.
  2. Check your screen resolution:
    Windows XP
    1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
    2. Click Display and select the Settings tab.
    3. Adjust the Screen Area to 640x480 and click OK.
    Windows Vista or later
    1. Click Start (Windows Key + Q in Windows 8), then Control Panel.
    2. Click Display, then click Adjust Resolution.
    3. Adjust the Screen Area to 640x480 and click OK.

If 640x480 is not available and your video card supports it, you can try manually adjusting your screen area. Make sure that your monitor supports this resolution before you try the steps below.

Windows XP
  1. In Display (from above), select the Advanced tab.
  2. Click Adapter, then click List all modes...
  3. Select 640x480, x Colors, x Hertz (select the lowest value for x)
Windows Vista or later
  1. In Screen Resolution (from above), click Advanced settings.
  2. Select the Adapter tab, then click List All Modes.
  3. Select 640x480, x Colors, x Hertz (select the lowest value for x)

I see distorted or rainbow colors in my game

If you see distorted or rainbow colors while you play a classic game, try changing your Windows theme to one that is not Aero.
