Diablo II Compatibility Issues and Workarounds

While Diablo II can run on some modern operating systems, it typically requires some minor workarounds to play. Select your operating system below, then follow the steps to resolve any compatibility issues you may experience.

Windows

Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8 / Windows 10

  1. Run Diablo II in compatibility mode.
    1. Right-click the Diablo II icon and click Properties.
    2. Click the Compatibility tab.
    3. Check Run this program in compatibility mode.
    4. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the dropdown.
    5. Windows Vista / Windows 7 only: make sure Disable desktop composition and Run this program as an administrator are checked.
    6. Click OK.
  2. Run the Video Test in the Diablo II install directory.
  3. Select Direct3D.
  4. Once the game loads, click Battle.net to patch to the latest version.

If the above steps don't work, try running the game in windowed mode:

  1. Right-click the Diablo II icon and click Properties.
  2. Click the Shortcut tab.
  3. Add -w to the end of the Target. For example: "C:\DiabloII\Diablo II.exe" -w

Windows XP

  1. Run Diablo II in administrator mode
  2. Patch the game by pushing the Battle.net button once you reach Diablo II's in-game menu.

Mac

Mac OS X 10.7 and Higher

Diablo II is not compatible with the newest Mac operating systems. For a possible workaround, please consult this article about playing older Blizzard titles on Mac OS X 10.7 and higher.

Mac OS X 10.6 and Lower

  1. Patch the game by pushing the Battle.net button once you reach Diablo II's in-game menu.
