Diablo III Lockups and Crash Errors

Keywords: black screen

This article is designed to assist you in troubleshooting Diablo® III issues such as the game unexpectedly freezing or quitting, computer freezes, assertion errors that generate an error log, general lockups, and crash errors that prevent the game from operating properly.

Windows®

  1. Make sure your computer meets the Diablo III System Requirements.
  2. Make sure your operating system is up to date.
  3. The game requires up-to-date drivers to run smoothly. Update your drivers regularly.
  4. Run the game in Administrator Mode to address any installation errors.
  5. Make sure your game is fully up to date by opening the launcher and allowing all downloads/updates to apply. Press Play when you see "Game is up to date."
  6. Run the repair tool to resolve issues with damaged game files.
  7. Many overlay programs can create instabilities in the games they're trying to enhance. A list of overlay programs that may be problematic with Diablo III can be found on our Diablo III Software Incompatibilities page. If you have an overlay program that does not appear on this list, it could potentially cause an issue and should also be checked.
  8. All Diablo III mods, regardless of what they do, are in violation of our Terms of Use and can result in a permanent ban. They can also cause the game to lock up or crash.
  9. Security software may interfere with the Update Agent. Disable or temporarily uninstall any security programs.
Advanced Troubleshooting
  1. Overheating can cause your system to lock up and become unresponsive. Check for overheating components.
  2. Errors in your computer’s physical memory can cause the game to crash. Run the Memory Diagnostic Tool.
  3. Certain malicious software can lock down necessary data the game requires. Run a virus scan.
  4. If the issue persists, uninstall your current copy of the game and reinstall the game from the Diablo III tab in the Battle.net App.

Mac®

Note: Using a modified OS on unsupported Apple hardware or using unsupported graphics cards in Mac Pros may cause lockups and crashes. These setups are not supported for gameplay.

  1. Make sure your Mac meets the Diablo III System Requirements.
  2. Our games require an up-to-date operating system to run properly. Run Software Update to be sure you're using the most recent version.
  3. Make sure your game is fully up to date by opening the launcher and allowing all downloads/updates to apply. Press Play when you see Game is up to date.
  4. Run the repair tool to resolve issues with damaged game files.
  5. Reset Folder & File Permissions to make sure there is no conflict between the latest OS update and your permissions.
  6. The folder may be saved on a corrupt hard drive sector. Run the Repair Disk utility to resolve hard drive issues.
  7. Programs running in the background can conflict with the Update Agent. Try closing background applications.
  8. Some MacBook Pro models have two separate graphics cards, which may require manual setup. Make sure your MacBook Pro is set to higher performance or automatic graphics switching is disabled.
