If you're experiencing lockups or crashes while playing Warcraft III, follow the steps for your operating system below.

Windows

  1. Make sure Warcraft III is patched to the latest version. Warcraft III will automatically patch to the latest version after logging in to Battle.net. The latest patches can also be downloaded from the Warcraft III patch page.
  2. Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed on the Warcraft III System Requirements page.
  3. The file being read may be corrupt. Run Check disk and defragment your hard drive to try to repair any bad sectors.
  4. Our games require an up-to-date operating system in order to run properly. Run Windows Update to be sure you're using the most recent version.
  5. Set the Warcraft III refresh rate and basic settings:
    1. Right-click on war3.reg and select Save.
    2. Double-click the file to run it. This file will set the game to run with the basic settings for sound and video and will set the refresh frequency to 60 hertz.
    3. Once the game has started, select the Options menu and adjust the game settings (such as video and sound) as desired.

      Note: If you adjust the video options and experience video problems, you may only need to set the refresh frequency to 60 hertz. You can do so by downloading and running this refreshrate.reg file.
  6. The game requires up-to-date drivers to run smoothly. Update your drivers regularly.
Advanced Troubleshooting
  1. Programs running in the background can interfere with the game. Close any running background applications.
  2. Install the latest version of your Motherboard Chipset drivers. Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for updated chipset drivers.
  3. Certain malicious software can lock down necessary data that the game needs to run. Run a virus scan.
  4. Overheating can cause your system to lock up and become unresponsive. Check for overheating components.

Mac
