Setting Up Sound Devices for Voice Chat

Mic not working or voice too low.

Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8
  1. Make sure your Microphone is connected to the Mic In or Line In jack on your sound card. If you are using an addon sound card, plug your microphone in to the active sound card. If you are using a USB headset, make sure it is plugged in.
  2. Open the Control Panel, then click Hardware and Sound.
  3. Under Sound, click Manage audio devices.
  4. Click the Recording tab. Make sure the right line is selected for your Microphone.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Click the Custom tab. Turn on your Mic Boost functions. On most microphones, you will see a Microphone +20dB Boost option. USB headsets may have AGC (Automatic Gain Control).
  7. Click the Levels tab. Try adjusting the slider.
  8. Click the Advanced tab. Make sure Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority are checked.
  9. Click OK. Tap on your microphone. If you see the green bar light up at a decent level, it should work with the game.
Windows XP
  1. Make sure that your Microphone is connected to the Mic In or Line In jack on your sound card. If your system has multiple sounds cards installed, make sure you plug your microphone into the active sound card. If you are using a USB headset, make sure it is plugged in.
  2. Open the Control Panel, then click on Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
  3. Click Sounds and Audio Devices.
  4. Under Device Volume, click Advanced.
  5. A sound mixer will pop up. Click Options, then Properties.
  6. Using the dropdown menu, select the device your microphone is attached to. Click Recording, check all of the checkboxes, and click OK.
  7. Your sound mixer should change to the Recording Control mixer. Make sure Microphone is checked and that the slider is set to a high volume. Click on Options, then Advanced Controls.
  8. You will gain an Advanced button below a few volume sliders. Find your microphone device, then click Advanced.
  9. Make sure Microphone +20dB Boost is checked. If you have a USB headset, you may have AGC (Automatic Gain Control) instead.
  10. Click Close. Your microphone should now be ready.

I hear my own voice.

Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8
  1. Open the Control Panel, then click Hardware and Sound.
  2. Click Manage audio devices.
  3. Highlight your sound card's output lines (usually Speakers), then click Properties.
  4. Click the Levels tab, then mute the Microphone.
Windows XP
  1. Open the Control Panel, then click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
  2. Click Sounds and Audio Devices.
  3. Under Device Volume, click Advanced.
  4. A sound mixer should pop up. Click Options, then Properties.
  5. Using the dropdown menu, select the device that your speakers or headphones are attached to. Click Playback, then check the Microphone checkbox. Click OK.
  6. Mute the Microphone on your sound mixer.

I need to set up surround sound.

World of Warcraft will detect your current Windows speaker settings and apply these to the game. If you have a surround sound system (4, 5.1, 7.1) and you want to use it in the game, you must set it up in Windows before starting the game.

Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8
  1. Open the Control Panel, then click on Hardware and Sound.
  2. Click on Manage audio devices.
  3. Highlight your sound card's output lines (usually Speakers), then click Configure.
  4. Follow the wizard to set up your speakers. Use the Test button and adjust your speakers accordingly. If certain speakers do not work, check your sound card manual and make sure they are plugged in correctly.
  5. After finishing the Wizard, run the game again. It will detect your new settings automatically.
Windows XP
  1. Open the Control Panel, then click on Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
  2. Click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
  3. Under Speaker Settings, click Advanced.
  4. Select your speaker setup from the dropdown menu. Click OK.
  5. Run the game again. It will detect your new settings automatically.
