World of Warcraft® Performance Issues

Keywords:

Slow and choppy gameplay can have a variety of causes. Check your latency before continuing with the troubleshooting steps below. If your latency is high, check our connection troubleshooting article.

Note: Before you troubleshoot this issue, check the World of Warcraft® System Requirements to make sure your computer's hardware meets the minimum requirements.

Windows

  1. Issues with temporary game files may cause a drop in game performance. Try resetting your user interface to clear out these files.
  2. If any in-game settings are set too high for your computer, you may notice a performance loss. Lower your in-game video settings in the System menu to improve performance.
  3. Outdated drivers can conflict with the game, decrease performance, and cause errors. Be sure that your drivers are fully up to date.
  4. If you're playing on a laptop, optimize your power management settings and graphics options for gaming.
  5. World of Warcraft requires an up-to-date operating system to work properly. Run Windows Update.
Advanced Troubleshooting
  1. Background programs take up some of your computer’s resources, which can make your game appear choppy. Close any running background applications and try again.
  2. Check for overheating hardware. If it looks like some components are overheating, you may want to bring your computer to a local technician for help.
  3. If you are running the game in Crossfire mode with two AMD graphics cards and you notice a significant drop in your FPS, run World of Warcraft in 32-bit mode.
  4. If you are using a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology, you must force your computer to use the NVIDIA graphics card. See NVIDIA's support article for assistance.
  5. Try running the game in a window and with no sound. You can enable windowed mode in the in-game System menu by changing the graphics Display Mode dropdown to Windowed. You can disable in-game sound by unchecking Enable Sound in the system Sound menu.
  6. Try selecting a lower setting from the Sound Channels dropdown in the System > Sound menu.
Note: Some add-ons may set Sound Channels back to High after installation.
  7. Errors on your hard drive could be contributing to your entire computer slowing down. Run ScanDisk and Defrag to address hard drive issues.

Mac

  1. World of Warcraft requires an up-to-date operating system to work properly. Run Software Update.
  2. Issues with temporary game files may cause a drop in game performance. Try resetting your user interface to clear out these files.
Advanced Troubleshooting
  1. Some Macs may experience performance loss due to overheating. Follow the steps on the preventing overheating guide.
  2. Lowering the maximum frame rate can improve performance by preventing out-of-focus objects from affecting your frame rate.
  3. Try selecting a lower setting from the Sound Channels dropdown in the System > Sound menu.
Note: Some add-ons may set Sound Channels back to High after installation.
  4. The System Management Controller (SMC) controls power flow and fan speed. If it's not working properly, it can affect game performance. Reset the SMC.
  5. Reinstalling your drivers can resolve performance issues related to corrupt drivers. Run a Combo Update.
  6. Performance issues can arise if your Mac’s permissions are not set correctly. Try repairing disk permissions.
  7. Run an Apple Hardware Test to make sure your computer’s physical components are working properly.
  8. Some MacBook Pro models have two separate graphics cards, which may require manual setup. Make sure your MacBook Pro is set to higher performance or automatic graphics switching is disabled.
